Zagoria, Buffalo News, Pitt puts press on Oats and Hopkins

Here's a really good article that was written a few weeks ago about Nate Oats and how he has run the program and recruited since he took over from Hurley. Good read with lots of great background on him and his current assistant coaches. My big takeaway is the guy knows how to hire good coaches on his staff.

Give it a read...

After reading these about the buy outs for Oats and Hopkings, how in the Hell did Pitt ever agreed to a contract
with Stallings with such a high buyout. I see the angle of Barnes giving his buddy a good deal but why Gallagher and the board ever approved such a deal is mind boggling.

Look, the reality is it takes a lot of cash to lock up that kind of #OffensiveGenius.

It's hard to imagine that Gallagher, PITT BOT's, or any other person in the PITT administration who was responsible for reviewing, performing due diligence, and or approving the Stallings hire paid any attention at all to the transaction!

If any of them simply Binged the guy it would have been obvious he was a below average coach on his way out and the message to Barnes should have been NO keep looking.

But if you don't pay attention, do your jobs, a coach like Stallings is what you end up with.

Checks and balances are in place for a reason!

We should already have the #2 choice ready, unless it is Musselman. If it is Musselman it should be announced 24 hours after he is eliminated from the NCAAT.

This is where things are dangerous, if it isn't happening quickly.

Everybody has their own opinions on this.

IMO alot of time was wasted chasing a guy ( Hurley) who wasn't going to end up at PITT regardless of the offer. He and his wife didn't think the location was right which makes the job a bad fit, which means if he had accepted it would have been a short stay.

It's important to be aggressive but choosing realistic candidates to chase is even more important.

-I would say, it will strictly depend on long it takes before the hire is made. If we close Oats in the next 48 hours, I couldnt give a rats ass about Hurley, I said all along Oats was in My Top 4, and arguably better then Hurley, more aggresive then Hurley, and potentially a better fit. If we whiff and settle for Mark friggin Schmidt, this is a bigger clustersuck then Stallings.

Nice find on the article JD1976. I have been all in on Oats from day 1 of the "search".

It's possible that the Stallings hire has added

I wonder if the hiring process has been amended since the clusterf*ck of Stallings' hire. Is it possible too that there are now TOO many people involved in the hiring process? I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Pitt athletic offices....

-Its got to be Oats. Outside of Rothstein Zagoria is just about the most reliable source there is on a National scale. And, he said not 1, but multiple sources told him Pitt is talking and dealing with Oats.

-If this board meeting is about the offer to Oats, fine. Close the dam deal and lets get moving

I can only imagine what you would have been posting when Ben Howland’s name surfaced as a candidate for the Pitt job. Or when Dixon was a candidate to replace him.

Regardless of whether Pitt hires him, or whether Pitt should consider him,, Schmidt’s a good coach. You’re a buffoon. Both are documented facts.

I’m sure when the hire is announced and it’s not one of the names that you’ve been trumpeting on the board, we can expect a barrage of posts from you about how bad Pitt and Lyke $hit the bed.

Frontrunners gonna frontrun.

-2 years ago I pushed for 4, Keatts, Wade, Beard, Drew. Proof is in the pudding, bud. All 4 now in the P5 and making noise

Yes, but....

the one is the #31 PG (so he's about 150th nationally, had 4 high-major offers) and the other is the #42 SF (so about 200th nationally, had 1 high-major offer). Sure this is better than what Pitt has committed right now, but let's not think of them as top-50/75 type 4* players.
For god sakes, its Buffalo. Its in the MAC conference. And the location is...BUFFALO! The fact that he can get anyone to come there is amazing. He out-recruiting Stalling this year in the ACC. I think the guy can recruit.

2 NCAA tournaments in 18 years, and the guy is almost the same age as Stallings. It would be a dumb idea to hire Schmidt.

Less accomplished too. Let that sink in.

Mark Schmidt doesn't make sense no matter which perspective you look at him from.
Not saying I'd be excited by the hire. It would be another lackluster move and wouldn't generate any excitement for Pitt basketball--like the Stallings hire. I'm saying the guy's a decent coach, his program has improved under him, and he has proven more than, let's say, Micah Shrewsberry.

I'm sure he's a decent coach with a solid handle on x's and o's. That's really all you need at a school like St. Bonaventure. In the ACC, particularly for a program that aspires to be in the upper third, that's not enough. Micah Shrewsberry has never had a head coaching job, so it's true that he's proven less in that regard, but he's also 14 years younger, is very well regarded for his work with guards in particular and Brad Stevens seems to love him. Is that enough to make him a desirable hire for a school in our situation? I'd say no because I think a rebuild of this magnitude may be over the head of a guy who's never been a head coach before. However, there's an element of uncertainty there as well, whereas I'm beyond sure that it is over Schmidt's head. For the record, Shrewsberry would be at the bottom of my list, but Schmidt wouldn't be on it at all.
