To be one should be reserved for those who have been top shelf for a while. Since this century, 13 schools have been #1. No N.D. No Nebraska. No psu. No UCLA. No aTm. No MSU.
Only 2 have more than 2. 6 with more than 1. Seems to me that there is just a handful....USC/LSU/OSU/FLA/GA/Bama. Teams that managed one and little else aren't blue.
Stability by good coaches sure helps. Big stadiums make them seem better than they are...WI/aTm/etc.
Big winners in the past don't get the label, today is what counts. I'd say Pitt was a blue from 75 to 82 and the 1920s + Only a couple of these schools have multiple pro teams, and Pgh is the smallest of all.
