Well, what did you think? If you haven't seen it yet, stop reading. Great acting. I admit to having some trepidation with the casting, but all 4 leads pulled off their characters well. And the storyline appears well constructed.

I will say that I am slightly uneasy with the unremitting doom. I get creating a mood; last season the setting itself was a main character. But I worry about an absence of chemistry that existed between Matthew and Woody that kind of "lifted" the weight of the story in their scenes together. Not in a humorous way but in a way that added depth to the sadness and despair of what was happening to and around them. Obviously I will watch this, but right now I'd guardedly give it a B+. At least for me, you can only heap constant doom and gloom for so long. It's one of the reasons that although I was a big fan, I had to stop watching "The Walking Dead".

Thoughts?

Hard to say.

I have some criticisms, but it may be mostly because I'm comparing the first episode against how much I liked the whole first season.

Still, I'm wondering if we can get into all of these characters the way we were able to get into Rust and Marty.

So far, I'd have to say B-/C+

I wasn't impressed by the opener. It seemed cobbled together without direction.I know it's a completely different storyline but last nights episode certainly didn't grab my full attention like last season's opener. I'm still hopeful that it tightens up in the next couple episodes.

I am not going to compare it to season 1 at all. Instead I am going to look at it once all 8 episodes are done and then evaluate it. I am okay with it not being as good as season 1 if it ends up still being better than 95% of tv out there.
Season 1 was a combination of so many things. Great chemistry with Matthew and woody, interesting literary references for those that wanted to supplement their viewing, plus a storyline that had sex, action, religion, and a silence of the lambs feel.
Last night was definitely slow and uneven, but I am okay with that. Colin ' s character was really good in his abusive relationship with his son. On one hand you can't believe that part of the story because when he beats up the dad, you think how could someone like that have a job. Then you recall current events in the news and realize it very well could happen.
I like the Vince storyline of helping track down the rapist, but my question was "did he give the right suspect to Colin, or was it someone he had a beef with and wanted rubbed out by the crooked cop?"
The Rachael McAdams character I am going to withhold judgment on right now. I love her as an actress, but her family subplot I didn't like.
The viagra popping Taylor character I liked but thought the finding of caspere was too convenient and made for a weak plot point to pull the three leads together.
Overall as an episode I would say a solid B, but I will reserve judgment until I see how the other 7 episodes stack up

I was disappointed. Lots of style and swagger but nothing to latch on to. For me, it's all about the characters. Good drama has to have characters you care about. Love them or hate them, you have to care what happens to them. None of them made me care. Which is a shame because I really need something to replace GoT.

I agree with all the criticisms. As noted, it seemed disjointed and cobbled together, and forced with the stylistic stuff.

They put the main law enforcement characters together at the end, so maybe it builds from there with the inter relation in a positive way.

But, while you had two main characters for season one, they appear to have at least four characters they are trying to feature.

I was disappointed in Vaughn so far. I actually anticipated him doing well, but the character seemed to have no real depth. I kept thinking Michael Keaton would have been better, as bizarre was that was, adding more dimension to it.

Still more time.

I wasn't blown away with Ballers or the Brink, either.

But, they showed some potential in different ways.

I have to say I was hoping for more. It's like a poor copy of the first season so far with everything being dark and the constant flashing back. I too was disappointed in Vaughn because I like his stuff. It's only one episode so hopefully things get better from here.

I'm going to reserve judgment until I see the whole thing. Though I do think people are overrating the STORY of season 1 because the acting was so good. The ending of season 1 was a huge disappointment.

Anyway, I thought the first episode was alright. It looks like the show may continue it's really poor and problematic way of dealing with women, so that's kinda disappointing. But at the same time, I wonder if the main characters were intentionally meant to come off really one note in the first episode.

I thought it was alright, but the first season had it all and not a fan of Vaughn in this.

I watched it expecting to be disappointed after last year.

However, was pleasantly surprised. I'm looking forward to episode two.

TV gets out there compared to real life, but I did think Farrell hitting the father with the brass knuckles would not go without a complaint and both the father and son would be witnesses.

I watched it last night. Those complaining about the "choppy" story lines I don't think is fair. If this was a feature length film, this would be like the first 10-15 minutes building storylines. The key is how they were coming together.

I thought it was absolutely LOL hilarious when Colin Farrell's customer beat the father of the bully kid. I was wondering how the Tim Riggins character fit in until the end. Rachel McAdams really transformed herself, into a more dark "Marge" from Fargo as a cop. It held my interest and intrigued me for sure.

I just assumed I would be disappointed, but really wasn't.

As for Vince Vaughn, I remember him in some film with JohnTravolta where played a fairly sinister guy, and did a decent job of it. So I am willing to give him a chance.
