Funny that now it’s a ho hum reaction (not you though-just in general and Myself included). The ACC is like SEC football on steroids. Winning this league is more difficult than winning a national title. Kinda like winning Big East Basketball in Jamie’s day. Remarkable for a program that used to play on a polo field in fox chapel.
I didn’t realize that it’s that tough. I know the ACC is really good at certain sports so that’s a pretty awesome result.

Thoughts on the SMU game

The thing that fans have to remember is you must win games NOW. That's what was so frustrating last season. There were decisions that could have been made to give Pitt a better chance of winning. If Yarnell plays the whole season, I believe that Pitt would have finished 6-6 or 7-5 at worse.

Now the team is faced with another dilemma of sorts. What if Holstein struggles early in the Virginia game and the Panthers are down? What does the staff do? Do they ride it out and keep Holstein in the game? Or do they make a change that would create a spark on offense by inserting Yarnell?

I say you have to do what is necessary to win NOW. Holstein may be the future, but we don't know if he'll be here down the road. NIL and the portal has changed everything. That should include game day decisions. You have to win now and not think about the future.

Cold Look at Statistics Only

Did not watch last night's game so the views below are solely based on examining the box score for the game's stats--without being influenced by emotions from having actually watched the game.

1. Terrible 2nd Quarter that began to really go down hill with Saul's missed FG which would have made the score at the time 14-6 vs keeping it at 14-3.

2. Other than the 2nd quarter scoring was roughly even over the other 3 quarters---Pitt 25 pts, SMU 24 pts. The 3rd and 4th quarter results suggest Pitt players did not quit.

3. Total offense SMU 467 yds to Pitt's 453 yds. Based on the theory that an efficient team should score about 1 TD for every 100 yards of offense---Hypothetically the score should have/could have been something more like Pitt 31 -- SMU 34. Obviously, SMU exceeded that 34 by 14 and Pitt failed by 6 of scoring 31.

4. Four fumbles with 1 lost and 1 interception thrown obviously standout as big negatives for Pitt.

5. The two long scoring plays were big for SMU as Pitt won time of possession.

Overall, based on the stats, and given that it was a road game, the loss doesn't look quite as bad to me as the score indicates.
Stats and data have value. But so do peoples’ eyes. Pitt was inferior in every way shape and form last night and appeared they were in over their heads. It was a total and complete dismantling.

Yeah Most of Pitt’s points came when the game was no longer in doubt.

The biggest issues were tackling and OL play. They generally only rushed four and got a lot of pressure which allowed them to have 7 in coverage. For the most part it didn’t appear as though there were any open options.

For the offense to get better the OL has to play much better

Thoughts on the SMU game

Very true. I believe as you do that SMU is an asset to the conference.

However but lots of schools in the SEC have big time rich boosters would could pay up as well if they believe Lashlee is their guy.

A cautionary tale for paying coaches big bucks is Florida State. They have buyer's remorse.

My personal view of SMU is they have a beautiful urban campus with many rich families sending their kids there.

Confession of a dirty old man: They have a lot of beautiful coeds and moms to go with it.;)
If the University of Arkansas were to offer, I think he would consider that. Not only did he play QB there, but his hometown is very close. I do think the ACC would be easier to build a powerhouse in than it would be in the SEC.

A lot of it could come down to how much he likes the Dallas area and the ties he has made at SMU.

I imagine the SMU folks are already pondering how they can sweeten his contract.

If you're talking about the Penn St sucks refrain....yes, I was totally in agreement with it. The refrain is silly and stupid. It gave too much attention to PSU. I came to Pitt not understanding it and the average PSU student wasn't that much focused on Pitt. That tradition needed to have been gone. It was embarrassing.
I know they play every year, but do you also find Alabama's chants during Dixieland Delight embarrassing?
