Pitt Women Defeat Utah Tech

Utah who?....Maybe some other posters know this school, but
I sure don't. It is a road win however, and that's a good thing.
I didn't see any of it on tv, but the box score did show some
positive areas. Apparently the D is getting better in that
they caused 23 TO's with their full court pressing. Marley
with 5 steals (she is very good at that). Our Bigs both had
double figures. The 42-29 differential in rebounds tells me
we handled them in the paint. OTOH, Our A/T0 ratio of 12/18
isn't out worst, but still remains a problem. Malcolm, only
12 minutes, and no pts is something I just don't understand.

These last three games show some overall improvement.
Question is, can they continue it now that ACC games are
here? These players seem to have some fight in them.

WVU Game Going Thru Photos

I hadn't been to a game at the Pete since Aaron Gray was playing, live in SoCal and detest cold weather. Anywho, friend had a ticket for me for the Clemson game, flew in and got a ticket from a Pitt fan for the basketball game.

Tonight I was looking thru my phone photos and reminiscing about that game. How the hell has that hoopie team become the darlings of NCAAB upsets? They were one of the most horrendous teams I have seen in a long time. We put a severe ass whooping on them, and I came outta that game figuring, without knowing their schedule, that they'd be lucky to win 5 games this year. The final score of that game was a lot closer than it deserved to be.

For our NET value, it is good. For my tastes fvck the hoopies.

OT: Eagles anemic passing vs Steelers

Things aren’t pretty in Philly. Jalen Hirts threw for 108 yards yesterday. They aren’t exactly thrilled. Could we see a QB change there? Ahh…nevermind. ;).

Pitt night - Wizards

Some of us here are DC based so figured I’d share, the Wizards are doing a Pitt night on January 7th against the Rockets. Doing a giveaway of a co branded Pitt/Wizards bucket hat… also going to be sharing with Indian heritage and Georgetown themed ones.

If tickets are cheap enough (look to be around $25 though probably before fees) I might consider since I work close to the arena. I know this is a thing even MLB teams have been doing with certain college nights but Justin and Bub have been doing pretty well it seems so that’s an added bonus, although the Wizards as a team are awful.

OL development

i've been saying it for years: the quality of OL play has gone down pretty strongly in the last 10-ish years. i'm not prescient or anything - i think most would agree. this is both college and pro.

just watch the NFL: most on here are steelers fans (or haters). you can see just how bad the steelers OL has been for at least 5 years. bottom 1/3 of the NFL. and the NFL only really has a few teams who have a solid OL across the board.

i was listening to bill polian on the radio today. if you've never listened to him, he's really good at explaining things. here's some points he made today:

* started out by talking about his time with the colts. the OC started EVERY practice with this statement - "Job #1 is to protect #18. if we do that, we have a better than 50% chance to win every game." bill said "very few teams have this mentality."

* he also said OL coaching is poor. teams don't focus on teaching. "colleges do not prepare offensive tackles for the NFL. they have to be coached." one would assume the transition from HS to college is even more pronounced.

* another point he made: "teams don't practive blocking correctly." he made the point that the you can not teach blocking w/out contact. but that teams aren't doing live drills nearly enough. "they're doing this to prevent injuries. but there's no data that this is true." that may sound like, "old man yells at clouds," thing from an older guy. but based on what we've seen, there's probably some truth in that.

i think there are other factors in play as well. namely, spread offenses leave OL out on an island A LOT (more receivers = less blockers). and defensive coordinators are more and more creative at getting defenders on clean rushes. and also, pass rushers are making tons of money. great athletes are trying to be rush ends. those guys used to be tight ends but tight ends rarely get paid. an NFL DE who gets home 10x/year is going to get paid a ton.

thanks for attending my ted talk.

Female coach - former player

As everyone knows, the glass ceiling was broken this year with Katie Schumacher - Cawley completing the "perfecta" of being both a NC winning player (@ PSU, 1999) and a NC winning coach (female). 1st ever, and congrats to her. As a relatively newbie to the volleyball "world", this seems like a pretty big deal. And her opponent, Dani Bussbum-Kelley was a NC winning player for Nebraska in 2006

Here is my thought and question:

Thought: Both KSC and DBK had great coaches to play for and to mentor them. Despite not winning a NC (yet) no one can argue that Dan Fisher isn't among the best coaches in volleyball

Question: Realizing that Pitt hasn't won an NC (yet), are there any current/former players for Pitt that Fish mentored that you see as a potential/future top-level coach? Rachel Fairbanks, maybe?
