The Morning Pitt Mailbag: 1/10/2025 - Who should take the last shot? Which players will break out? And where does Pitt shop?

We've got some great questions in this week's Mailbag. Who should take the last shot for Pitt hoops? Which Pitt football players will break out? And where does Pitt shop in the portal? All that and more in the Morning Pitt Mailbag.

Who woulda thought this game woulda been so good

First, great game

Second, man, Pitt's prospects looked so bleak, now here we are after seeing Dugger perform so well, Reid coming back next year, Brookin and Brewu looked great. Obviously we win if Dugger played all game, but still gotta hand it to Toledo's QB, he played tough for sure. We didnt have much of a rush, OL for us is so banged up its nearly comical, and we still had what 450 yards??

Every game win or lose everyone says to fire any coach we ever had, and I even thought this after seeing Lynch start and not playing Dugger, and even posted to fire Narduzzi. Of course, this is probably more the OC call, but Narduzzi has to step in and say "we are putting in Dugger (Of Diffenbach before)"

Game game though, I was entertained! Lots of very good players for us that played well too.

Dunn & Leggett

I caught the second half of the game on tv, so I missed the bad and just saw the good :) Each time the Pitt bench was shown either during a TO or when a Pitt player went to the bench, Dunn and Leggett were right in the middle of everything, especially Dunn. They both would high five the player coming out or congratulate him on a good play, etc. At one-point JDG made a 3 and GDG was standing up at the bench and Leggett pushed him as if to congratulate him on his brother's success, both smiling huge. This team really seems close and not only does that exemplify great coaching, but Dunn and Leggett are great examples of leadership. Both seemed genuinely excited for their teammates, and both were involved in TO's, and like I said above, slapping their teammates for good plays and coming off the court.

Great to see! When both get back, barring no other injuries, this will be a dangerous and athletic team. Can't wait to see it!

VB: Where Do We Go From Here?

I think this program needs to address 2 main issues this offseason.

1) They need to find Rachel’s replacement. Is it Haiti coming off an injury or do you go to the portal for more of a “sure thing”?

2) Libero. I mentioned this in the game thread - Klika was a very good libero, but the championship teams seem to have elite liberos. Scott digs everything for Louisville. It’s both impressive and infuriating. I feel like Pitt has been above average, but not at the level they need to win a championship at that position. Meyer was pretty impressive in the tournament and they’ll presumably also have Griffin coming back, but idk how I feel about their defensive abilities as the starter.

I’ll throw in a third too - another serving specialist. Rachel, VVG and Flood are all gone and they were Pitt’s best/most consistent servers. Obviously when Babcock’s on it’s special, but they need more servers who can put pressure on opponents.

Anything else? Are the answers already on the roster? I know “get the best setter, libero, and servers” isn’t a unique thought since every team would like to add that, but Pitt has proven they’re an elite program and they should be able to reel in some big fish (no pun intended).

The Morning Pitt: 1/13/2025 - The Louisville loss and what's next

Pitt's bounce-back from the loss at Duke fell short on Saturday when the Panthers got beat by Louisville at the Petersen Events Center. What happened in that game? And what does it mean for Pitt going forward? We're breaking it all down on the Monday edition of the Morning Pitt.

Defensive Question

This is a general question as I have been watching my son on varsity this season and have coached in the past and may again in the future. Our varsity season isn’t going well.

If you were going to play a certain defense as your primary defense what would it be. You can’t just say man or zone? How would you defend screens, what would your rotations look like, how would you teach team defensive rebounding. Any defensive discussion is welcome.

I am just curious what most posters preferences would be for high school basketball. @StephenGertz @JimHammett
