We seemed to be the better team from the start.

Denver always seems like a mid-tier, maybe even a bottom tier ACC team when we play them. They always have a great record in their mid-major league. Still a great win. We are the Vanderbilt of College Soccer.

#1 in two sports and top 25 in another. Pretty darn cool.
Depending on the poll, top 25 in two other sports. FWIW, women's soccer is #13 in Top Drawer Soccer (the poll that had Denver #1) and #17 in the RPI, but only had one vote in United Soccer Coaches as of last week.

Pitt men's cross country moved up to #5 in the mid-Atlantic regional rankings (ahead of Penn State), women #6 after good showings at Paul Short on Saturday. Neither are close to the national rankings, however.

This is what being a major athletic department is supposed to be like, but Pitt has to start winning some of these NCAA championships. Winter sports trending up; however spring sports pretty much still a disaster.

Stanford is currently ranked 5th in the country. They are 8-1-2. Just out of curiosity, do you happen to know where that "1" came from?

So I'm guessing Denver. I cant say I watch much college soccer but I have watched a little of Stanford and they haven't impressed me. And if I'm being honest, I dont think this is one of Vidovich's best teams. It reminds me a bit of that Jamie Dixon team that overachieved after everyone left that one year. I dont see any MLS players like in years past. People rave about Jackson Gilman so maybe him. Just a nice group of good players who play well together.

NO it DOESN'T!!

Austin Powers Lol GIF

So who is going to be the first pitt team in history to win an NCAA national championship? At some point is has to happen right?

Clearly it has to be volleyball. Soccer in a knockout tourney is too much of a crap shoot and this men’s team isn’t as dominant and doesn’t have the pedigree of our women’s Vball. But how cool would it be if we won two this year after going 100+ years with 0?

I mean, as far as pedigree in the recent past, the men's soccer team has been to 2 final fours and an Elite 8 in the last 4 years and are also unanimously ranked #1. I'm not sure "doesn't have the pedigree" is accurate, unless you are talking overall history, particularly as Coach Vidovich has actually won a national championship before.

They haven't been getting the media attention as the volleyball team, and that sort of sucks for that program, because it is obviously really, really good...historically one of the greatest runs of success of any Pitt program.

Has to be volleyball. There are almost no upsets in women's volleyball. For example, this Pitt volleyball team has a bye to the Elite 8 and it would take a sizeable upset to beat them there. So they really are 2 wins away from a Natty. In soccer, Pitt's Round of 32 won't be a cakewalk. Its soccer and they can dominate play but draw 0-0 and get eliminated in PKs even though they had 80% possession and outshot their opponent 25-2. Then in the Round of 16, their opponent will be of semi-equal talent.

I’m not talking recent program pedigree which doesn’t really have an impact on this years team. Players do. So I’m talking about roster pedigree. The Vball team has players that everyone knew in the Vball world coming out of high school. There is all American level pedigree in multiple positions. There are future olympians on the roster. Maybe it’s just the nature of things with the state of collegiate men’s soccer and particularly how Jay builds rosters…but I don’t think we have that kind of pedigree on the men’s team but I wouldn’t know. And there just isn’t anyone there dominating the sport statistically like Stafford, Fairbanks, and Babcock. Can they win a natty? Of course. But it’s soccer and they can just as easily lose one game in a knockout format as win 5.

Ha! I just responded to Paco and eluded to the same thing. I agree. That Indiana game a few years ago in the college cup is the perfect example. Pitt had most of the ball for the game. indiana sat behind the ball and defended and played for that one counter attack goal. We had our chances, couldn’t find that one goal, and Indiana got one chance and scored.

Top 25 in TWO other sports: Football and women’s soccer.
I agree. Kind of.

I think our women’s soccer team is very good and is kind of lurking in the shadows right now. They aren’t being recognized by the coaches poll, which for me is the one that matters. I liken the TDS poll to something you’d cling to if you’re building something new and looking for any kind of recognition you can get. But our women’s team arrived last year, if not sooner than that. They had a bad loss early this season to Buffalo and that’s hurting their rep. If they had beat UNC or Cal instead of losing 1-0, there would be more buzz around the program. I didn’t see the Cal game but the UNC game was there for the taking. When you play UNC and you’re the better team on the field, you’re pretty good. They just didn’t get it done on that night. And that’s soccer as you know better than anyone. You’ve been playing and following the sport decades longer than any of us. Lol. We will see if they start stacking wins in this conference which is insanely tough. Hopefully they do. If not, it might be a year like last years men’s team.

They are just outside the top 25 in the latest coaches poll at #27.
