2020 WPIAL Class

The only people who think the WPIAL is loaded with talent are the WPIAL coaches who all think they're Don Yanessa.

Agree about many of these coaches. They think because their player had a nice Sr year against less than stellar comp that Pitt should be all over the kid. But the kid most likely has a MAC offer or 2 at best and their coach wants to blame Pitt. Meanwhile no other power 5 programs offered their player when these days with Hudl and camps etc they can get seen by everyone.

When Pitt does take one of these kids like Ben D. the coach at PR holds it against Pitt when his kid can’t play at this level. So you are mad at Pitt but not the other power 5 schools who never have the kid a shot smh.

I want them to land the best possible players they can. I don’t care where they are from. The truth is there simply aren’t a lot of really good players in the WPIAL right now.
I second that. As long as they get good players in Pitt uniforms, I don't care what high school they are from, or what part of the country they come from, its when the recruit gets to Pitt that counts and puts on a Pitt uniform

WARNING LONG post. Pitt will get WPIAL players as we have always got some good and great ones. But many will go to Big name schools as they always have. We have PSU to the east and OSU to the west. When they want a highly regarded WPIAL player they will get the kid MOST (not always) of the time.

They get over 100k fans at their games, the kids are treated like gods by their crazy fans and can get away with tons of crap because of this.

Add in ND and Mich who come get players when they want as they offer the same perks.

Yes we need to recruit better but I agree with the emphasis on FL, DMV, VA, NJ. Hopefully we get Devonshire who has the talent to play most anywhere. But there are very few like him around the WPIAL who will pick us over the schools I named above.

This year the WPIAL had maybe 2 or 3 kids whom would be considered national power 5 recruits. Kristofic whom never considered Pitt tho we recruited him hard. Porter (imo overrated) but still we were not beating out PSU and Devonshire whom we have a good chance. But even Devonshire does not really have the big names as the OSU offer is not committable etc.

Other WPIAL kids who signed with P5 schools are nothing special. The WR going to Cuse, the OL going to IU, Tomlin etc...we can get better players out of state and don’t have to deal with WPIAL coaches thinking we screwed over their guy who was nothing special to begin with.

Let’s use FL as an expl. Sure almost everyone recruits FL and still there is a ton of talent to go around. UCF, take away their QB is made up of mostly overlooked 2 and 3 star talent from FL. We all know what they did to us and others as well.

****The talent level is so great in FL that there are a number of single HS’s that would beat the entire WPIAL If you made them one single All Star team (watch out the WPIAL gym teacher coaches and fan boys are going to get mad but it’s true). I could give you at least 7 to 10 schools but that would make this long post even longer. I won’t count IMG who gets kids from everywhere.

I’ll use an example like St. Thomas Aquinas from Ft Laud. They are one of several schools in FL that had more kids sign with P5 schools than the ENTIRE WPIAL. This is 1 HS! In the early signing period they had kids sign with 2 Alabama, 2 Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, 2 South Carolina, Wisconsin, Cuse, Vandy, Kentucky and Pitt. Yes we got 4 star RB Carter who may have only been the 5th or 6th highest recruited kid on his team and he is a big time player. If he played in the WPIAL he would prob be the highest rated player and end up at a PSU, OSU etc.

So far STA had 13 kids sign with P5 schools and many with big time ones like Alabama and Oklahoma.

This is just 1 HS with more talent than the entire WPIAL. They killed Dematha 38-0 who had 2 kids sign with Alabama as well. And yes the DMV etc has more talent than the WPIAL as we got 2 good ones from Dematha last year.

STA actually lost 1 regular season game to Miami Central who only had about 5 power 5 kids sign lol. 3 signed with Florida. And they got upset in the state Chip game by the always talented Lakeland who is always loaded with P5 players.

Give me a 2 star Weaver and a 3 star Camp over WPIAL kids and coaches who think they are better than Pitt. Kids like Weaver and Camp not only have talent but we don’t see them bitching on Twitter like certain local kids.

Or give me a talent like Mathis who is by far the best athlete on the D or prob the team. Our own D coordinator said it. Runs a 4.4 and has 41 inch vert. Yes he is our 3rd DB but plays a lot and the 2 kids ahead of him will be NFL DB’s. Yep we do have a real nice WPIAL DB who can flat out ball in Jackson who does not bitch on Twitter like certain guys. He just puts in work and makes plays. Same with Pinnock who was not a high recruit but has NFL size and talent.

Carter showed ability and he was a pretty low rated FL recruit we stole from ISU. I think we have some real nice FL talent coming in this year with the 2 RBs and I really like the S Hill from the loaded Wekiva HS who only had kids sign with Clemson, Georgia, FSU etc.

I don’t give a sh!t where the players come from. Do you guys like Ffrench less because he is not local? Or did you not cheer for Fitzgerald as much because he was from Minnesota?

If the few P5 WPIAL kids who can ball want to come to Pitt and not act like divas come on down. If not fine go elsewhere and we can get just as good or better players (most times) from FL, DMV, VA, NJ etc.

.....right on, and it gives me all the more reason to cheer and pull for the western Pa kids who stay and try to make a difference.

True. I’m a big Dane Jackson fan, a WPIAL kid who by all accounts works his tail off and is a great rep of Pitt on & off the field. Next stop for him NFL.

And it’s not like PN has not got WPIAL kids. Hamlin, Mathews, Houy, Danielson etc.

A kid like Whitehead proved that PN will play you right away if you are ready.

If you want to be king of the WPIAL you'd better be coaching in the MAC. It ain't 1978. It ain't 1988, 98 or '08. It's 2019 and the level and depth of talent ain't there.
I could give a crap what any WPIAL coach thinks of Pitt....soon, very soon, the influence of football coaches over player destinations will be next to nothing....just like it is in EVERY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL SPORT!
Living in the past might be a prerequisite for being on the WPIAL board, but nowhere else.

Good post. But..........................

Always hear the excuses (reasons) why Pitt can't recruit well against the big boys. But these excuses (reasons) have always existed for Pitt. They are always the step child in a pro town. The big schools always have more people at their games. Yada, yada, yada. Always. Or let's just say this in the last 40-50 years have been true.

And yes, the WPIAL is at an ALL TIME LOW as far as quantity and quality of talent. I emphasize that in caps because it is apparent. And while it is never, ever going back to the 70's and 80's as far as talent producing, there also will be ebbs and tides in the new normal. This is an ebb, there will be a 2-3 year stretch where there will be a tide. We just came out of one of those mini ones.

What I have never seen in my lifetime, even in the period of old Pitt Stadium, Majors II, the fall of the Big East, Wlat, etc...is I have never seen the lack of interest, the almost despise that the locals now have at Pitt. We are in a stable conference, a seat at the table, the National champ plays here, hell we beat them there. But never, EVER seen such disinterest in Pitt by locals.

And while the locals ain't all that, they do represent our best chance at getting really good, top players, Tyler Boyd, James Conner, Aaron Donald, these guys weren't Florida kids. So that year where there are maybe 10 seriously Mid to high level P5 quality talents, Pitt can't just get one of them.
I always see people say "even in our heyday we never got them all", and this is true. But we also never just got 10% or 20%. At least get 40-50%. And I am sorry, this doesn't come down to "instability", it comes down to recruiting. And we lack something, we lack a coach who resonates and connects locally like say a Terry Smith does. We lack someone who can build some trust, because I sense a lack of trust by locals with Pitt and Narduzzi.

Times have changed. The state of West Virginia has 3 Four Star Recruits. WVU is the flagship school and essentially the pro team in the state. WVU went 0-3 with these players.

Maybe Wvu has two strikes on them but the third strike(Wright)hasn't happened yet.Holgersen like Narduzzi is a terrible recruiter.Holgersen didnt even offer Strange the TE that's going to Psu,pathetic.

It all starts at home. WPIAL is just a small piece of the puzzle. If you want to win a championship you have to go where you have the best odd of landing the most talent. The best odds are in your home region. There is enough talent within a 3-4 hour drive of Pitt to win a championship. Pitt has a much better chance of consistently landing top players locally then say from Florida.

You do realize that WVU has a new coach?
Did you hear we landed on the moon!Thats what I'm talking about 77 Holgersen didn't go after these kids, his recruiting stunk.Brown got in late on Wright(5*)but is giving it his best shot late in the game.Stange TE already signed with Psu and Nestor committed to Osu while Holgy was here.Prediction on Nestor is Frankl$ns flips him from Osu.

Exactly... take 2 or 3 of the best players from the wpial which we usually do, but most importantly, keep bringing in players from down south.

Gotta go where the talent is... right??
Would be key for us ti make a better effort in the DMV. Top talent in the country come from there but we dont have a foothold there at all.

Do these guys not count?...Twyman, had a solid Frosh year, could be real good soon. Salahuddin, 4 star National recruit who has a shot to be our RB next year. Morgan, Tallander, Jules, Woods...

Collins is doing well and our new WR coach has DMV contacts as well. So we are making progress.

Those of you who knock the wpial kids are just bias, short sighted and one sided.
A 3 star is a 3 star regardless of where he is from.
Michigan has several wpial kids that are succeding, so demeaning wpial kids is stupid.
And Pitt isn't good enough to recruit any kid from anywhere. Sorry but consecutive 7 or less win seasons, with no bowl or bowl losses is not endearing to recruits.
So as the saying goes (Pitt should) take care of (and recruit ) home first.

Phil Jerkovec - unknown hasn't played yet
Miles Sanders yes, Jo-El Shaw have to see it at ACC level

Not much at TE Banks - again TBD
Houy TBD, Lugg Yes, Thorpe Yes, Ford TBD, Hainsey Yes along the OL
Hooker yes, Matthews we will see if he improves under new OC at WR

Givens yes, Jeter yes, Wheeler yes, Hinish yes on the DL

Hudson yes, Robinson yes, Raines yes, Hamlin yes, Jackson yes, Wade unknown secondary....

Not a perfect team, but a hell of a base to build around.
I say this team would definately help improve the defensive talent, but idk if some guys like jeter > weaver? or hinish better > jones jr?

is wade or Robinson better than Jpinny? maybe....

Overall I think the greatest impact would be the Oline.

I really just think that WPIAL coaches think these quality players are better than Pitt and when we don't take guys like Jo el shaw (probably not good enough) that kills us with kids later down the road. HCPN probably thinks its better to get 100% off players from FL to build relationships there.

And Pitt will never be clemson good, so stop dreaming.

Jeter gets a "yes" with one career tackle??

Raines gets a "Yes" with no playing time yet?

Seems that the WPIAL would have helped our OL situation... but every other position we have as good or better talent.

Jeter gets the yes because of an article from UM saying the players and coaches say he is really coming on and waiting for graduation/nfl of a few.

Raines my mistake was thinking henry

I understand they may think he shows promise...but, Jeter still has 1 career tackle.

I said earlier some WPIAL guys haven't accomplished anything on the field yet. Jeter falls into that category.

PA only had four "blue chip" recruits (per 247) for this year's class. Arkansas and Oklahoma were the same with four each. Hawaii had five, Indiana had 6, Kentucky had 8, and Tennessee had 13. All of those states are less populous than PA. ACC states are worse. Florida (45), Georgia (40), North Carolina (15), and Virginia (11) all have twice as many. Even Maryland has eight.

I'm going to bet that trend continues on down to three stars. At least proportionally when you account for population differences. My point is, there just isn't that much good HS football in PA any more so there's no way Pitt can recruit in their own backyard and keep up with the rest of the ACC.

I was actually relieved when I read that The Dude is predicting that Wright will pick WVU.

And you can argue that Pitt hasn't done awful with the OL recruiting locally.

Agree as Houy should start at OT. Ford will have a chance to get good PT. Zubovic and Kradle both had nice offer sheets and seem to have good potential. But like many young OL it could take time.

I would be shocked if Zubovic and Kradle both flamed out. They're gym rats and will put the time in. The real struggle is at tackle. Houy seems to be doing well enough to be ready. After that, the list of projects is long. I'm kind of rooting for Drexel and I think Dick has potential. Not too sure after that.

Good to hear bout Zubovic & Kradle being gym rats. Kradle is a G and I think the staff see’s Z at G as well. As you said Houy will prob be ready and I like the athletic ability of Van Lynn, he was the back up LT last year but as we know was moved to TE as a blocker when the one kid quit. PN said he is going back to OT.

What do you see in Drexel? And you aren’t talking about him as OT right as he is prob 6’ “2” tops as he will prob be the back up C. But they didn’t have any confidence to play him when Morrissey went down.

No, they didn't. He's a project. I like the way he plays the game. What stood out in his HS film was how he was always blocking at the end of the play. Keeps his feet moving. I think he's smart enough to play center at this level. I don't know if he'll ever be a starter but he has another year to get ready (assuming Morrissey doesn't go down). So yeah, I'm kind of rooting for him. I like the kid.

Got it. Hopefully he is ready if Morrissey was out again. We need at least one more guy on the OL who can play C if a C went down...no idea who that is.

We know there is a lack of prove OT’s at this time. In an article a while back our OL coach talked about liking tall OT’s with long arms (makes sense lol) and if the don’t work out at OT or can’t move well enough you can move them to OG. So with our OL being made up of mostly G’s which one do you think would be able to make the move to C if needed? Kradle?

I have no idea. Center isn't exactly a simple position to learn. I only say that because they're usually QB-ing the line. I saw one tackle move over in college and he stuck, which was weird but it worked. He had a great first step which was beneficial.

The "long arms" thing is a preference for a lot of coaches but a kid has to learn how to use them. So much of pass blocking is what you do with your hands.

LeCharles Bently is out in Cleveland and is one of the best teachers of pass blocking that I know of. I'd really love to see Pitt at least do a clinic with him. Pitt could also use a guy like Poodie Carson who is a local and teaches Krav Maga techniques to the Steelers linemen. Aaron Donald uses him as well. (Full disclosure, I've known Poodie since we were kids and he was a pretty good college OL-man as well but he never had the size.) Not saying Pitt doesn't have a competent coach but there are always ways to improve.

Collins is doing well and our new WR coach has DMV contacts as well. So we are making progress.
Those guys are all young and theres only like 6 of them. No reason not have have 10+ year in and year out

I was actually relieved when I read that The Dude is predicting that Wright will pick WVU.
The dude is a retired coalminer from Shinnston ,Wva who quit hs in the 10th grade went he turned 18.The Wpial player who is having a very good career is Wilkensburg's own Kenny Robinson. In two years at Wvu he has 7 ints and and was in on 123 tackles, not to shabby!

I understand they may think he shows promise...but, Jeter still has 1 career tackle.

I said earlier some WPIAL guys haven't accomplished anything on the field yet. Jeter falls into that category.

Ah yes Jeter.... He talked a lot too...

He didn’t want to play for no average school... Because he was no average player.... He wanted to play in front of huge crowds.... He wanted to make big plays on a big stage....

Only problem is....

He ain’t playin’.....

Maybe someday...
