I was gonna say -- I am surprised the Latrobe LB going to PSU didn't make this list. Did he have a bad season? Is he injured or something?

Seems like a lot more undecideds in comparison to years past. Is that because the high school recruiting landscape in college football has changed generally, with the limitless transfer portal and NIL results in decreased emphasis on high school kids? Or is there less talent in Western Pa? It's probably more likely a combination of both.

He got injured.

Both Tatsch and Black got hurt. Black had a concussion and to be flown via helicopter to the hospital. Not sure about O'Hara. I don't think he was injured...

Crazy the Peters QB didn't make it, but 2 of his teammates did. He looked like the only good player on his team last week. That LB going to Stanford looked slow.

Narduzzi's recruiting struggles locally pre-dated NIL. It is almost impossible to recruit as bad locally as he has. Its never been this bad. Not even close.

For contrast, compare the First FAB 22 in 1980:

Rich Ingold – QB – Seton-LaSalle – South Carolina
Shawn Morton – QB – Bethel Park - Cincinnati
Ken Karcher – QB – Shaler – Notre Dame
Mike Huwar – QB – Frazier – PITT (Played DB)

Matt Stennett – RB – Shaler – PITT (played DB)
Darnell Stone – RB – Thomas Jefferson – PITT
Pedro Bowman – RB – Thomas Jefferson - Duquesne
Marlon McIntyre – RB – Belle-Vernon - PITT

Nick Merrick – WR – Seton-LaSalle – Virginia
Larry Miles – WR – Bethel Park – Maryland
Jonathan Hayes – WR – So. Fayette – Iowa

Bill Fralic – OL/DL – Penn Hills – PITT
Bob Schilken – OL/DL – Mt Lebanon – PITT
Eric Alwine – OL/DL – Greensburg CC – PSU
George Little – OL/DL – Duquesne – Iowa
Kevin Dorcak - OL/DL – Gateway – Lafayette
Stacy Burrell - OL/DL – Aliquippa – Kentucky

Cesar Aldisert – LB – Mt Lebanon – PITT
Mark Herrman – LB – New Brighton – Vanderbilt

Mark Hogan – DB – Brashear – Tennessee
Mark Kelso – DB – North Hills – William & Mary (Played in 4 Super Bowls)
Nathan Borders – DB – Riverside – Indiana

Nineteen P4 scholarships by today’s standards. Only a few non-Division I Scholarships. Not like today…

There were also 26 other players who were not on the FAB 22 list that got P4 scholarships. That’s a total of forty-five P4 scholarships given in one year from the WPIAL.

Had Pat Narduzzi hired Terry Smith then Brennan Marion his tenure would look a lot different.
Who are the WPIAL players at PSU who are making difference? I'm not sure they have a WPIAL player in the 2 deep.

Who did Brennan Marion land at PITT during his tenure?

What position was Narduzzi going to offer Terry Smith to pry him away from PSU in 2015? A coordinator job?

A lot of Wpial players have helped Penn state over the narduzzi years and Smith would have helped with others kids.

We get Sanders or Hardy that's a start. Not to mention you get a snowball effect with other recruits once you get these kids. Maybe Hudson doesn't go to Michigan?

I misspoke about smith and narduzzi it was Chryst who could have brought him in but instead he brought Haering. Which was an absurd pick.

Who did Marion bring in? He was here for one year. He's obviously had success as an OC. They give him a shot we keep Addison and don't hire Cignetti. Those sound like wins to me.

Isnt that misleading though because there were unlimited scholarships?

I think during the Franklin era, the WPIAL hasn't really produced that much for him. His DMV/EPA guys seem to carrying most of the workload.

I would have loved to have Sanders.

Hardy? He was a good guy off the bench for PSU for sure. But, would he have been a difference maker during the era of Hamlin, Ford, Pinnock, Jackson, Mathis, Hallett, Hill, etc? I think he would have had basically the same role he had at PSU at best.
Who did Marion bring in? He was here for one year. He's obviously had success as an OC. They give him a shot we keep Addison and don't hire Cignetti. Those sound like wins to me.
Addison was gone regardless if Marion was here or not. If it were a Marion thing, Addison would've went to Texas and not USC.

That's putting a fence up!

Franklin installed a bunch of gates in the fence.

Hard for recruits to get excited when Pitt plays off campus in a partially empty stadium of another team. It s what it is. I'm sure Penn State can offer a lot more. They'd probably even provide young boys if it helped land a five star. Whatever ever happened to Mark Madden's story about the the young boy pedophile ring?

During the Narduzzi era what WPIAL recruits have turned out to be the best?

Sanders
Hinish
Hudson
Hamlin
Geno Stone
Di Nucci
?

Edit: I’m sure I’m omitting some guys like Hayes, FitzSimmons, McMillon that have been productive but are still in school.

Sky Moore, Dane Jackson, Joey Porter Jr.

Zandier was "college good." Devonshire got drafted, but I question how sticky of a corner he was/is. Hainsey, if you count him. Hardy. Paris had an AA season. I think Lovelace makes the still in school grouping. I'm sure I'm missing a few. But maybe not many. I saw Dinkins catch a touchdown against Wisconsin, I think. No idea what his career has been like, though. Katic is the starting at Indiana, and I believe he has been for a while now.

Definitely Porter. Hainsey, Moore, and Jackson were all hits. Ford was a head case but for a brief period he was as good a college player as any of them.

I don't think he was gone regardless. Think he saw the offense and knew it wasn't going to be a good thing for him.

Marion would have thrown him the ball more or at least convinced Addison he would have.

WPIAL Players since Narduzzi took over. There ain't a whole lot of difference makers there if we're being honest. The best players in my opinion are in BOLD. Sorted by high school.

Are Malik Hooker and Justin Watson too old to be considered Narduzzi era recruits? They both have had nice NFL careers after outstanding college careers.

Might just be missing him on this list, but wasn't there a dude who went to Rutgers like 2-3 years ago? Think he was a receiver from Washington County who got a Pitt offer after camping here.

Edit: Davoun Fuse - 6'4" DB who played on special teams last season and who I don't believe has played this season. So likely not the next Kyle Hamilton.

Nineteen P4 scholarships by today’s standards. Only a few non-Division I Scholarships. Not like today…

There were also 26 other players who were not on the FAB 22 list that got P4 scholarships. That’s a total of forty-five P4 scholarships given in one year from the WPIAL.
That's interesting. I mean Fralic was a monster, but other than Kelso, really very few of these guys did anything. Hayes did and played in the NFL. But the rest of these kids, even those who went to Pitt were nothing special.

What I really don't get is if you are a RB, why the hell are you going to Penn State. I think Singleton is really good, but he gets what, 10 carries a game? The other back is also really good and they keep on recruiting these highly rated RB's, he gets like 3-5 carries a game, whey would that idiot stay there and not transfer?? Why would these RB's keep on committing there??

Hate to say it, but I think the new narrative is more like "why not?" You'll always have the experience of having been part of a big-time program. And if it doesn't work out, you can just transfer and schools like Pitt will welcome you with open arms.

Tatsch had a pretty significant shoulder injury.

Bob Schilken, Cesar Aldisert, and Marlon McIntyre all played quite a bit, or were starters for Pitt. They were good players who made an impact. There was definitely more talent back then.
Most of this year's fab 22 will be getting splinters in their ass up at state Penn. I am amazed at how willing these kids are to go to state Penn so they can be the next big thing to be fawned upon by 110,000 screaming nitwits only to be buried on the depth chart for 2 or 3 years before going elsewhere or just sticking it out for their degree. It's maddening. I mean, I'm not even suggesting Pitt is where they should go, but, most of them have other P4 offers. These kids just buy into what Terry Smith and The milk-dud are selling, only to be disappointed.
I have thought for a while that it is a bit of a game where these local recruits are the pawns in the game. I think the milk-dud loves coming to the Burgh and plucking these recruits from the Duzz, fully aware that very few if any are ever going to be real players for him.

If you can imagine this - Rutgers supposedly gave him a better NIL deal then PITT.

I don't think he was gone regardless. Think he saw the offense and knew it wasn't going to be a good thing for him.

Marion would have thrown him the ball more or at least convinced Addison he would have.
Everything I've heard was quite the opposite.

Marion isn't really known for a prolific passing game. His offense is a running based offense. His main goal as he states is to get you out of 2 high and force you into 1 high.

These guys don’t want to be a workhorse RB anymore. The NFL no longer values that, and holds it against you when it comes time for that second contract.

The top RBs in the portal this year was the dude were Judkins and Martinez. Both went to schools with highly regarded returning RBs that were going to get a ton of touches.

That’s probably not an accident. During one of the Miami games this year the announcers were talking about how it was the returning starter for Miami that contacted Martinez and sold him on Miami.

A RB trying to get a dude to come join the team, knowing he would be surpassed on the depth chart if that dude did join the team, sounds insane. But that’s the RB position in 2024.

WPIAL Players since Narduzzi took over. There ain't a whole lot of difference makers there if we're being honest. The best players in my opinion are in BOLD. Sorted by high school.

Nice list, thanks for compiling. Probably would have bolded McMillon, he's had a nice career here. Kradel was hit or miss, but overall pretty solid, along with the BP lineman. For kids that left, I think Fearbry is seeing action, Dinkins and Wade were solid, not great at PSU. Same with Donovan Jeter at Michigan
