Considering some of our recent end of the year performances,
this wasn't all that bad. Also we scored 40+ in two of those
wins and 34 last night. That is exactly what we weren't doing
earlier in the year.
We also did this with different players leaving the program
during those games to prepare for the draft and avoid
injury (Ford, Weaver, Hamlin, maybe others). We also had a
number of players miss at varying times due to COVID.
This year was clearly a better season's end, something for
which Duzz has been roundly criticized.

Losing to 2 top ranked teams (Clemson & ND) and Miami which is #10 and 2 one pt losses. Not bad considering the circumstances BUT doesn't excuse not being competitive in the Clemson and ND games. H2P!

Those 3 wins were against teams with a combined season total of 9 wins. And in the middle of that Clemson humiliated Pitt and stripped the program of all dignity in front of the whole world. Last night’s win was a hideous display of football by both teams, an embarrassment really, but fortunately as bad as Pitt looked, GT was that much worse.

So forgive me for not seeing “winning 3 of our last 4” as some kind of springboard for future hope and optimism.

Exactly. Three out of four was a reflection of how the schedule shook out; it wasn't some indication of improvement.

Clemson has pretty much stripped the entire league of their dignity. That's what they do.

Yeah, what you say may be an obvious and practical reply to cast a shadow on any year end optimism.

However, setting aside that reality, just thinking that we beat FSU, VT and GT all pretty convincingly (including yesterday even though it was a little ugly and closer than it should have been because of getting stopped on 4th down and/or settling for FGs instead of TDs), one can’t help feeling a little positive about that.

For the most part, we are beating the soft middle of the ACC like we should MOST OF THE TIME. Just need to avoid the 1 or 2 toe stubs (NCST, BC this year, other culprits in prior years) that PN and/or players and coaching staff unfortunately have every year. The question, is a PN-led program ever capable of avoiding those yearly toe stubs.

And the above then just leaves how we do against the really good teams. Obvious answer this year was utterly terrible. But we have had some success in this area in years past.

Exactly

Most pitt fans are ignorant sports fans. And many post here.

Winning 3 of the last 4 is an accomplishment rather than losing record 3-8 or 5-6 is a big deference going into the off season. There were a lot of young players that have gotten valuable playing time with the virus issues and some guys opting out. This will help the defense next year and finding out that Gonglaves is a player for the line. Clemson is embarrassing most teams they play except for Alabama and ND. Alabama just beat 22 ranked Auburn by a big score. Pitt loss to three top ten teams and two of them without their starting QB. The two one point losses should have won.

6-5 but 2 points away from 8-3...if, and it is a big if since Pitt always seems to lose a couple games every year that they should win, but if they had beaten NC State and BC, they are 8-3 and we are all having a different discussion. It’s the winnable games that we need to take care of. Much different vibe at 8-3...

I have to agree. My biggest issue with Narduzzi's teams is the lack of talent & development of the Offensive Line. He's actually learning to be more strategic, which he desperately needed to do. Take away the ridiculous 1st quarter they played at Clemson and the last 4 games were ok.

The first quarter at Clemson was a total lack of execution.

When you see coaches go ultra conservative against teams with superior talent just to attempt to shorten the game and keep it close, the first quarter at Clemson is a textbook case of why they do that. Pitt played to win and it bit them in the ass, hard. I'm not second guessing, or making a case for or against what they did. Just saying, that one backfired.

I don't subscribe to your "they coached to win" theory. Look at the facts for both Clemson and Notre Dame. Pitt's Offensive Line is SO BAD that both of these schools shut down the running game and forced Pitt to be one Dimensional. Vs. ND Pitt was playing with a backup QB who actually did OK considering the game was placed 100% on his shoulders and his Offensive Line was Offensive. Recall, it was like 14 - 3 with 2 minutes before halftime and NF blocked a punt. Terrible coaching.
Vs. Clemson, Pitt couldn't run again and Pickett just panicked and started winging the ball giving up 3 interceptions in Q1. ( The reason he won't be an NFL QB ).
Narduzzi better fire Borberly and get someone who can recruit and develop Offensive Linemen. If he doesn't, his tenure as a Head Coach will be over.

So heading into 2021, IMO, fire Borberly, hire a GREAT O-Line coach and develop the next QB between Yellen, Beville or Patti. If your Offensive Line still sucks you're going to be looking at 6-8 win seasons forever.

We definitely improved the offense over the year

Some of the overly negative Pitt fans crack me up... "Fire Narduzzi! We're tired of mediocrity. Narduzzi needs to go!"

The same crowd: "OOOooo, Pitt should hire the guy that got shitcanned when he was 3-4 midway through his 3rd season at Florida. Or maybe we could get the guy that lasted 2 years in Starkville!!"
