What's interesting about this is how simple it is (one page), that it was a 3-year contract for $7K a year (that is $100,564 per year in CPI adjusted 2016 dollars), and that it was signed a year before he was to start coaching (Sutherland coached Lafayette in 1923 and Pop Warner coached Pitt in 1923, finishing out his contract, despite having also signed a contract to move to Stanford the following season).

They didn't have TV money back then. $7k was bug bucks in those days.

Also, 15 years ago today, Pitt destroyed NC State 34-19 in the Tangerine Bowl. Antonio Bryant is named MVP.

=========

I was at the Pitt vs NC St bowl game in Orlando.

Lots of red at the game but a nice Pitt crowd.

Pitt hammered QB Rivers all game and DT Tyree Young had a scoop and score for TD. Tyree may have been a true Fr in that game. Tyree was a player. Too bad Tyree made a wrong turn in life.

There was also a great party at the team hotel after the game. One of the best post game parties ever.

That was a great bowl win. Such a shame Walt did his no-huddle spread or else that team goes at least 9-2 in the regular season. Beating a future NFL quarterback was nice looking back.

By the end of the year that was a very good team. Priestly really came on the last part of the year. Enjoyed being at the Tangerine Bowl and in Morgantown for Pitt's big win against WVU at the end of the year. As well as Tyree Young played in the bowl, it was hugely disappointing when he was ineligible the following year.

As well as Pitt played at the end of the year, they played that badly early in the year when they ran the spread-saw them get their tails beat in a listless performance at BC. Wlat...a good guy but to this day an enigma as a HC.

My dad bought me a Tony Dorsett throwback jersey after Pitt beat VT that year and that game was fantastic. Pitt absolutely destroyed them that day.

Del, Young played in 2002 but had his season cut short versus Texas A&M when two Aggie linemen cheap shot him as he was unblockable up to that point of the game. I was so disappointed that Walt didn't call out the Aggies at his weekly press conference.

I believe Pitt had a 7-0 record when Young started and finished the game -- the final six in 2001 and the first game in 2002.

you are right...forgot about that.

Pitts glory years under Jock S. Many think college football was pure back then, Hardly. Pitt was a SEC caliber program in recruiting, money, paying players ect. Jock was fired as the move to the academic side was to clean up the football program and force him out. Pitt has made major blunders as to the egg heads jealous of the athletic success and killing Pitt football. Paco should list the Cancellors who were the worst for Pitt athletics/football.
