A few interesting things to point out regarding the Pitt-Duke football series
- Pitt leads the all-time series 14-9, including a 5-1 record against the Blue Devils since they joined the ACC in 2013. The only loss was the 51-48 2OT that we blew(itt) in 2014. Narduzzi has not lost to Duke since becoming Pitt’s head coach
- Pitt has scored 50+ points in three of the six games since 2013, in addition to putting up 48 points in 2014.
- This game was a very intense game in the 30s when Wallace Wade was Duke’s coach and Pitt was led by Jock Sutherland. In 1938, #3 Duke defeated #4 Pitt 7-0 in a snowstorm game that kept the Panthers from a potential third straight national championship claim. However, Pitt got revenge in 1976 during their national championship season, defeating the Blue Devils 44-31 at Wallace Wade Stadium. Surprisingly, it was Matt Cavanaugh, not Tony Dorsett, leading the way.
- Pitt opened up Duke’s now-Wallace Wade Stadium in 1929, clobbering them 52-7. It remains the largest point differential in the series, though 2016 came close. (thanks RaleighPantherFan)
- Pitt and Duke played the first ever coast-to-coast nationally televised game in 1939, a 14-13 Panther win. http://www.sportsbroadcastjournal.c...aas-grip-until-the-supreme-court-said-let-go/ (thanks California Panther)
- If the past is any indication, Pickett could have a big game Saturday night. Three Pitt quarterbacks have thrown for 230+ yards against Duke since 2013 and two have passed for career highs, including Tom Savage’s 424 yards and six touchdowns in 2013.
- This series also features one of my favorite defensive plays of all time
Should be a good one!
