Aaron Mathews

Just picked up an offer from PSU.
Is Pitt still recruiting him hard?
I checked on this last night, 247 Sports had him at 88% to Pitt, and with a Penn state offer.

A Few months ago, Franklin did not offer him, and now all of sudden is looking at what Coach Pat & staff are going after, and all of sudden Franklin as he loses Decommits all of sudden is learning from Pitt?

A Recruit in Michigan in Nordin is about to Decommit from Penn State and they know it?

Penn State has dropped in Recruiting ratings too!

I honestly think his ship has sailed at Pitt.

He has written negative tweets about Pitt getting verbals from other receivers. He wants to be a receiver we want him as a db

Well, I do not follow recruiting and by no means an Expert nor pretend to be, just seeing what recruits were still left in Pennsylvania and their lists of offers.

I stand corrected to better knowledge by you. Too bad I liked Matthews size and speed and he is a 3 Star Recruit!

Yet, Pitt needs Wideout too, but I defer to your info, good luck and with him well where ever he goes, but I still hope he makes Pitt Is It!

It seems like Matthews stock has dropped

Matthews is a solid player, but Pitt picked up Winfree and Flowers, who are both incredibly talented. Matthews was put out when Winfree announced he had committed to PITT. Good luck to this young man, he just waited entirely too long. You have to know how to play the game of recruiting, or you could be left out.

Narduzzi wants to turn everyone into a DB, and I see the logic of tall DBs, but Mathews seems to be too long to make the quick turns that a DB needs to make. I do like him as a WR.

Wade has said he has a desire to play with other Clairton kids, so where Mathews goes could have an impact, but I doubt it will mean much in the end.

He is a good Player and now many schools want him, hope Tyler Boyd can help bring him to Pitt with Lamont Wade next year!

Either way, I just want Players from Pennsylvania to do great anywhere they play but prefer they play for Pitt!

Also, feel that Pitt, Penn State and WVU Bowl Games wins or losses can sway some recruits to decide one way or another, so hope Pitt wins the Military Bowl too!

All 3 Teams and Programs are pretty close this year but Pitt needs players to play right away too!

Captain,

I like Matthews as well, and I think seeing him slinging the ball in a double reverse for Pitt would be awesome. He has great size and good speed and I think at one time was a top priority for Pitt.
I just think this was a case that will happen quite frequently hopefully with better recruiting and we will have to turn down really good players because we have other commitments. Maybe we still get him... I dont know, I dont know Narduzzi and what they want with the remaining scholarships, but I just get the impression that its Hamlin at DB, the 4 star RB, and one of the Dlineman and possibly the 4 star Olineman... and maybe we take another flier or 2.

We are also pursuing the LB from NJ, Reynolds, and he seems likely to come.

I don't think we take any "fliers" at this point. I think they are still recruiting a few targets they really want, and it will be them or no one, because the numbers are short, and every kid they take now will require moving someone off of the current roster.

It's been the one he's been waiting for... EVERYTHING that Franklin does is calculated. He is big into flash and making a statement, except on the football field. He wants to win any recruiting battle involving Pitt. He's been waiting for an opportunity to get his nose inside Clairton for a while now. Wade seems to be excited about the offer as well..

Keep in mind though that the most important thing is getting good football players no matter where they come from...

Wonder how recruits will view Franklin and staff losing to a coach less Georgia.

I saw Matthews play in WPIAL Class A championship. Frankly he looked like a stud.He was the biggest player on the field. However, I was wholly underwhelmed by his play. Not one big hit or explosive play on defense. As a QB he seemed to be easily tackled by much smaller and slower players. At 6'5" he is not a corner or safety. Projects as tight end or d-lineman. He needs 2 years of development and maturity. Even then I do not think he is a football player.
His teammate Wade is definitely a player. if Franklin is recruiting Matthews to lure Wade next year--then it is not a bad strategy.

Thank you and appreciate the knowledge, i liked him when is aw his size, school, and speed! The Clariton Players are like Aliquippa's they can play Football.

Also, Franklin is targeting making better relationships with western PA High School Coaches & Players and going right for those Schools and Areas.

I just think this was a case that will happen quite frequently hopefully with better recruiting and we will have to turn down really good players because we have other commitments.
Well, that is a good thing, so long as it is Coach Pat making that call. he does seem to go after certain players he sees he can coach up, more than just 4 Star Players! I can trust his judgments!

A Program can exceed 25 Scholarship per year, so long as they don't have more that 85 NCAA Scholarships on April 1, 2016 in Totality!

I have been reading your posts, I enjoy them very much!

Absolutely correct, Franklin thinks the way you Coach is Recruit at a high level, hire Great Assistants, and let them do the coaching, and when they can't he will fire them, like Donovan.

It took me a while to learn this too, but a good sources knew it, and explained it to me. Franklin himself cannot coach up his Players.

This is a great flaw in a Top Coach for 2 Reasons:

1. If he can';t coach up his players and does not know how, he can't have the same judgment to hire Assistants that can do it?
AND
2. Coaches he faces like Harbaugh, Meyers, and Dantonio he faces every year and Ruhle, Ferentz, and Narduzzi he will face this in addition in 2016, can coach up and have better judgment in knowing what Assistants can do it as well!

So, as you say, Recruits are being targeted and told anything to commit to Penn State, but once they do, they do not play as quickly and are not being coached up as well, because that is not Franklin's Strength his Talking is, but that does not win Games on Game Day against better Coaches that can coach up and recruit?

Keep in mind though that the most important thing is getting good football players no matter where they come from...
Yes...you cannot win 10+ games just on coaching up, you still need the Horses to win against other Horses, Franklin is being smart targeting this region, the question is can ge keep doing it, if he keeps losing to OSU, Michigan, MSU and Iowa next year again as well as Pitt & Temple!

Franklin should win 8 games easily every year, but he has to start winning 10+ by 2017 and beyond more often and that is where he can have a problem?

Superb Post Pittmeister!

This is what caught my attention just looking at his recruiting Bios!

However, I was wholly underwhelmed by his play. Not one big hit or explosive play on defense.
Hmmnnnn, many say this about the Philly City Players not having the same toughness and big city Footbal Players, unlike the BB that are tough and great! I don't agree, because Golden, Adazzio and Rhule have been able to coach them all up at Temple!

As a QB he seemed to be easily tackled by much smaller and slower players. At 6'5" he is not a corner or safety.
Agree! Don't see many in College or NFL?

Projects as tight end or d-lineman. He needs 2 years of development and maturity. Even then I do not think he is a football player. His teammate Wade is definitely a player. if Franklin is recruiting Matthews to lure Wade next year--then it is not a bad strategy.
Coaches will draft Players on the same High School Team to get a Super Player later!

Paterno grabbed an Alvin Hubbell a QB/Punter from Hopewell the year before Dorsett and let him Punt a while, but once Dorsett went to Pitt, he did not see any play until the last game of his last year, on Senior Day! He said to me once, many PSU Players called Paterno Biggie Rat behind his back, when he would do it! Whether it was sour grapes I do not know, but I do know that happen and he at least never lost his Scholarship, so not bad at all, in the end? Except Dorsett did win a NCS for Pitt first before Paterno got his first in 1982!

I don't want to see the kid get played.

PSU coaches extend a very late offer and are suddenly in love with him, days after Wade publicly says he wants to play college with the other Goony (twitter names) guys. This very late offer smells like its bait to get Wade, who has become even more important to them since DB Hill just flipped to Michigan. PSU has been watching him for two years, and all of a sudden, they love his play? Its tough for a kid to see through BS from a professional BSer who is making millions to sway kids this way.

For his sake, I hope he chooses a place that really wants him, even if that choice is WVU.

Pitt slowed played him after Frrench, Flowers and Winfrfee!

Rescind the offer to Mathews! Let him rot in creepy valley for 4 years, end

Wade could be as well
Hudson could be as well
Sanders could be as well
Hamlin might be as well
Adams next year might be as well
Can happen and same for Pitt, we shall see, but PSU Franklin is a great recruiters and Narduzzi a great coach!

If they all go to Penn State then Penn State and then Franklin does Dominate Recruiting in Pennsylvania fir a Third Year, and most likely a Top 10-15 Ranking!

If Pitt gets them all, then Pitt can move to be being a Top 15-20-25 Ranking and Narduzzi becomes a proven Top 25 Recruiter!

Penn State Program has far more resources in recruiting and can afford bigger Rosters of Non-Scholarship Walk-Ons Role Players than Pitt Program!

Pitt always manages to find Recruits that become NCAA & NFL record Breakers better than Penn State, and Penn State always puts more Players in the NFL but most do not last as long or get injured.

Even during the Paterno Era, Penn State out recruited Pitt many more times, but Pitt out prouced PSU Players in Hall of Fames, NCAA & NFL Record Setters, NFL Pro Bowls, and NFL Players of the Year! whuile PSU produced more Bust in the NFL than any other major Program!

Bottom line, both Programs can be proud of their Recruits, Players and Former Players!

I see it coming down to which school wins their Bowl Game, but that is just me, and not very credible info just a guess?

Disagree, prefers he goes where he wants and if that is Penn State so be it? Pitt Recruits and Players 3will play each other to beat them when they play against each other.

I don't think Coach Pat is afraid of that either and considers it a challenge and Franklin too!

Franklin may turn out he is a Great Coach and we know Narduzzi is one, but the Programs have to Recruit and then coach up the recruits, No Horses less, Talent less wins!

Both Coaches are showing they can get it done in Recruiting but need to win against Ranked Teams and that take higher Talent!

It was stated awhile ago that he had serious interest in PSU. If so, so be it. He waited for an offer and got one, hopefully at the position he really wants. If all of this is true, then he should commit to them and be happy. Nothing wrong with fulfilling a dream, if that is indeed where he wanted to go. He had an opportunity to commit to Pitt and passed on it. Meanwhile, Pitt recruited others, so its a win-win with Pitt and him. PSU fans will be gloating that they stole one, but, of course, they don't have a clue what has transpired all along with his recruitment and future position. Best of luck to Aaron, and may his choice be good to him.

Well, Sanders is going to PSU. Seems like Matthews as well. Its still a little hard to believe we can land a McKeesport player so it would be difficult to bet against Hudson going to PSU. I've always had a good feeling about Hamlin but it seems like Pitt or OSU for him.

Pitt talks a lot about the 412 Crew but the Dominator could clean up pretty nicely in thr next couple weeks. If he could only coach.

Agree, Nothing against Matthews. Still Penn State Franklin putting out late offers means Penn state recent drop in the Recruiting Rankings from 10th to 19th has cause him to look elsewhere and now Penn State are missing out on other targets.

This may be a good for Matthews and I say good for him, this is not a good thing for Penn state as some other commits are leaving or taking more visits.

Yet, Franklin is still right now the better Recruiter due to being there 3 years now, and Resources Penn State Program has in Revenues! No shame in admitting that by any Pitt Fan!

MSU's Dantonio and Narduzze faced the same challenge at MSU and overcame the advantages OSU, Michigan, and PSU once held too!
