Kade Bell....

serious question, what do you consider "reading coverages"?

Eli and any young QB is not going to be put into a position of pre-snap reading more than to think man v zone and then go through progressions and throwing to the open #1 or #2 and maybe getting to #3 if given time before it becomes extend the play and run either upfield or enough with eyes up to find someone and throw accurately

"great" college QB's show that ability mentally and physically early and I am not sure about Eli with all the outside factors influencing him and needing to be considered but he looked to check several boxes at a high level

that said, he seemed to be different after injury and it's hard to overlook the interception early in the Louisville game as you can't not see that player or miss so badly but imo one of his consistent problems in on accuracy and touch with short passes, early on receivers helped him catching everything, later on receivers caught little and did not help him or Yarnell
He isn’t reading the safeties and nickel/mLB to understand which routes he can throw a receiver open .
He was the 13th ranked quarterback in the ACC out of 16.
Once a bit of tape was on this offense - it was shut down easily .

Maybe because he’s not practicing against zone coverage concepts

ended up 13th? what was he in the first 5-6?

Does it matter ?

The question was is he actually a great QB?
He showed some flashes in late game situations-
But also struggled for long stretches as well .
You asked for justification for my question , so I provided it .
What direction is the next goal post moving ?

That's called being a freshman. The mental part comes last.

you seem to assume a lot Pharm, incorrectly

just asking a question and yes it matters relative to my interest and factors that I think both changed but also how the early goalpost position don't necessarily indicate fully his future success

I assume you are assigning the goal post moving to your previous experiences on this board, so maybe you should check your emotional reflex thought and response as it doesn't apply to every poster

frankly the answer likely validates YOUR point which I mostly agree with, maybe I'm wrong there

I'm not convinced Eli is great at all but see potential

Isn’t bell a big reason Holstein is at Pitt? If he leaves then Holstein likely hits the portal putting us back to level 0

OC's aren't going to be able to fully install their offense in year 1. The offensive line was terrible (spend big money on a really good OL coach) and the receivers couldn't catch the ball (what is the WR coach doing). I still think Bell has potential to have a good offense. I'd like Pitt to be a physical team, I just don't think they get the type of OL recruits to do so.

I have been highly critical of Bell for reasons I have listed many times. However, he deserves a year to show growth in the offense, to recruit , to work with Eli and I hope that he is not looking for another job, but is working on.... making Pitt great again....MPGA...that is the slogan for the coming year.

Getting pushed out already?

So, is it just that hard working with Narduzzi as an Ocoord or was Kade over his head?
The Pitt offense finally entered into the 21st century this year. If Kade Bell were to leave that would hurt the program more then can be imagined. The Pitt offense was doing well, until injuries to the OL and Holstein happened.
Yinzers just can't understand that you can't play football the way the Steelers did in the 1970's and win in college football today.

weird, I don't Twitter much but do have an account yet never looked up any of the Duzz's

where was the mastered NIL video?
Several interviews where he said last year they basically paid everyone. But this year it sounded more like you earned money for how you performed each game. There were several write ups when we hit 7-0 about it.

I think it has everything to do with how hard it is to work with Pat. I keep saying it wouldn’t shock me if Pat started showing up to more and more offensive meetings when we got to 7-0.

Everyone knew the turnaround was Bell and not him. Then he is suddenly tweeting out garbage and appearing on interviews saying how he mastered NIL. His ego is huge.
Huh? Offense regressed starting in the Cal game. The D absolutely won Pitt the Cal and Syracuse games. What are you talking about? You think Narduzzi got involved and requested the OL to regress and pile up injuries?

Kenny was far better than Eli as a passer - because he had a real coach
let me preface this, not moving any goalpost!

Kenny was better but accuracy was never great on his long ball and frankly he lacked touch a lot like Eli

Kenny was monstrously better as a leader(as expected with time, but better than most could ever be) and imo quite a bit better runner yet with some of the same issues of happy feet and leaving the pocket early to run that any can assign to Kenny alone but no doubt was in part due to his less than great O-line

"far better" is a stretch extrapolation both considering and ignoring Eli's age and injury shortened season

Kenny never could make it through his progressions, even as a Steeler. His passing skills were never top-notch until year 5 when he had Jordan as both a receiver and a focus for the defense, allowing other receivers to get open. That coach didn't help Kenny much on the mental side. You're quick to judge Bell after only 1 season.

Truth is the jury is out on both Bell and Eli
Both showed some promise to be somewhat optimistic about next year and for sure there are some concerns as well. That’s generally true for first Year OCs and qbs unless there is lots of talent at other positions

When Mumfield is your best Wr you have talent issues at the position. I won’t even mention the disaster the OL was this year

BTW has anyone confined this rumor about Bell?

Haven't seen any of the national guys with good sources (i.e. Pete Thamel, etc.) report anything so I lean to rumor. Maybe Bell has an agent from the Jamie Dixon school of negotiating and wants to start putting his name out there for every opening to get a better deal from his current employer.

Say what you want about Narduzzi, but he never does that. I guess because he doesn't have a formal "agent" (assume he has a lawyer to review details of the contract). Probably a major reason the admin likes him so much.

Eli’s QBR is 50.5
Kenny’s from 2018 to 2021
53.7, 55,7, 60.9, 81.2.
So he’s always been more effective .

Eli can improve and I hope he does - but the post replied to called him a great qb
He’s not great

I agree that Eli isn’t great, far from it, but can improve with experience and hope he does.

But I sure hope you weren’t implying that there is any significant difference between 50, 53.7 and 55.7 QBR ratings, or even 60.9?

If Eli is around long enough, here’s hoping any upward trajectory he has in QBR is a little quicker and steeper.

but what was Eli's QBR through the first 5-6?

kidding, relax

48.2, 41.9. 63.1, 84.6, 72.9, 20.8, 38.3, 54.1, 31.3, 11.7

worth considering along with the rest of the performance affecting factors, "it takes 11 guys" and injury, drops, O-line, etc

Probably my biggest complaint of Kade. Seemed like he stuck with so many slow-developing pass routes, even as the OL got progressively worse and was providing less and less time to get a pass off.
Thats because they could not run the fast scheme he is known for. They had to slow the whole scheme down, because Yarnell could not run it, and the revamped OL could not keep up with a speed offense.

People saying Bell never adjusted are wrong. He did adjust. He did according to what the players could do. Rewatch the games Yarnell started. He was literally calling and changing plays. That is why it seemed the plays were slow developing. And its also why the penalties started.

If Kade wants to stay, you have to give him the chance to implement his total offense. They have to get linemen the can actually move, and get off the ball quick, which is what they need to do. And during the offseason, get in way better shape.

Everything you’re saying may or may not be true, sounds like a lot of speculation. But even if so, why/how does any of it preclude calling or changing to some shorter pass routes.

More says when you play bad defenses in WVU , YSU, and UNC - two of which fired their HC- it helps

agree with that context

there's always numbers and analytics but need to be judged with many other factors
Eli has the tools to become a very good qb .
But he’s a while away from that.
If he stays at pitt I hope he gets much better coaching .

Correct. Many other instances.

No they aren't, how about Pitt getting directly under center on 3rd/4th and inches instead of snapping the ball 6 yards deep only to lose two yards, over and over again. Trying to go up tempo on 3rd and short and getting stuffed repeatedly, awesome idea when it hasn't worked in three games....how about numerous pre-snap shifts with the defense simply ignoring the movement, meanwhile causing delay of game ,illegal procedure penalties...etc.

And neither was that coach to whom you referred.
