Adios Bama

Alabama shot 3-27 from 3 in this game. Brandon Miller shot 3-19 in this game. Live with the 3, die with 3.

And Nate Oats with his non midrange game philosophy of only shoot 3's and layups died with the lack of 3 point shooters in this game. He will never win a championship doing this and trying to play this way.

But did Pitt really get this team at this level/gear during ACC play?
The first time we played them, they were excellent until Pitt went on that 11-0 run at the end of the game. I thought that was Pitt’s best game of the season. I think Pitt’s style created problems but Fede would have had to be healthy.

Yeah, I mean the best basketball teams in the world play that way, but there is no way that a college team could win a championship doing it.

This is a single elimination tournament, not the NBA. And these teams always die in the NCAA Tournament. Its the story of players like JJ Reddick who could never get it done at Duke because it takes 1 bad shooting game and you are out. 3 level scorers, guys like Kemba Walker and Ben Gordon who take games over scoring from all over the floor, completely different story.

And Oats had a top 3 NBA lotto pick and still couldn't get past the Sweet 16. He and his team failed, again. He wont be getting another top 3 NBA talent pick for a while.

You know, that's a really good point. I mean right up until Alabama started playing the way they do now they were pretty much a regular in the Elite Eight and the Final Four. And they won, what was it, like a half dozen or so national championships? And now that they have a coach who plays for layups and threes they can't ever expect to get to that level again.

🤪

By the way, the total number of times that Alabama has made the Elite Eight is school history is actually one. All things considered this year was almost certainly the best year for Alabama basketball in their history. But yeah, if your definition of success begins and ends with winning the championship then Alabama, like 362 other teams this year, is a failure.

Did Oats say in his presser that they lost because they were in the wrong place, wrong time?

Guards, Guards, Guards - They rule the day come tournament time.
I'd believe that just about everyone would say Alabama has better guards and SDSU. Guards are big time but there really isn't a silver bullet for this thing. SDSU beat the #1 overall seed and is in the EE playing a style that many would say cant get there.

And, maybe they go down today, but as talented as UConn is I imagine quite a few teams in the NCAAT have better guards than they do.

Trammell took over the game and 47 of their points came from guards.

Sure. But, Bama would be believed by everyone to have the more talented guards and SDSU won the game with defense, rebounding, blocked shots, steals, physicality. Their defense around the rim was especially incredible from Mensah.

San Diego State had the #1 defense in the country according to Bart Torvik over the course of its last 10 games. They are also 17-2 in their last 19 games with a conference tournament championship.

Ive said it a bunch of times now, in that, its how you finish the regular season and what you do in March is far more important than what you do in November.

Alabama went up against a team playing hot and playing hard on defense and got completely shut down primarily because Alabama has a very stubborn and hard headed coach who doesn't believe in offensive adjustments.

Brian Dutcher is going to start getting high level major attention at other jobs. I know things got canceled in 2020 because of covid, but San Diego State was 30-2 going into that tournament and was ranked in the top 5 nationally. They have a coach that actually knows how to coach and win, both conference championships and NCAA tournament games. If the Pitt job opened up I would want to be all over this guy.

Not to mention, Gonzaga has nice guards for sure but their absolutely running almost everything through Timme and he is averaging 30+ their last two wins. You need decent guards but don't necessarily have to have elite ones to advance. Heck... Look at UNC... Are their two guards elite? They made the championship game just last year.

I loved every second of that game. I'd forgot about their 30-2 record in '20 as well. Wow!
