All-white uniform debuting this Saturday at Wake Forest

They did that entirely out of superstition

They started winning wearing black and ran with it

People overthink this shit.

Sounds like they were doing the overthinking. Teams shouldn't be put into that spot in the first place.

It’s just unorthodox professionalism. The university has invested significant time and money in carefully defined branding.

It was amusing, put a few butts in the Pete that night, showed city camaraderie and all that, when they did a “black and gold out” in the regular season with those black P jerseys. (And likely sold a few of those shirts, which was fine too…we know that’s much of the purpose)

But that’s where it should have ended. Once the basketball team got into the NCAA tournament, on the big national stage, that should mean the regular uniforms and official school colors and logos. Part of why Pitt tolerates having these big time sports is the reinforcement of the school brand like that in such situations. But then, for three days they’re out there looking like Purdue?

I have a good number of non-Pitt fan friends and coworkers, don’t really follow us… and multiple of them at the time commented specifically that they didn’t even realize it was Pitt, thought it was strange they looked like that, etc … rather than positive vibes for Pitt being the tournament.

But again, the only real surprise is that we continue to BE surprised that the school haphazardly F’s with its brand

“The kids like it” Is usually the retort. But in this case, I think even these 20 something young professional adults (which is really what they are; ‘kids’ are immature 8 year olds).
I even think that argument is overstated. Half of the reason of them liking it is it's the expectation that they make a big deal over an alternate uniform. There could be a uniform reveal at a team meeting and if the coaches hype it up, it could be the ugliest uniforms ever made and the players will act excited. When you are a two-win team, wearing a new uniform shouldn't be all that exciting. I get that most teams do it, but I love the few teams that still hold out and stick to their traditional uniforms. I'm old school when it comes to this.

They look nice

Anyone saying they look like PSU is nuts

They look nothing like PSU

Yeah, PSU doesn't have a monopoly on all white uniforms that have been worn 8,750 times by various teams over the years.

As for these Pitt uniforms... I think they're exactly what we all expected them to be. They're not unsightly or anything; I just don't think they're anything special at all. As much as I like the script, I might have went with the panther head on the helmet just to have some variance. They basically look like what we wear now, except for without any color.

I think white pants, blue jerseys, white helmets could look sharp. As I've said, I'm a fan of alternates that are just mixing and matching different colors. I would like to see some blue matte helmets.

I realize the purpose is to distract disgruntled fans (during a crappy season) and to sell some extra gear (any season).

Similar to a really bad program changing the official uniforms, logos, colors etc frequently.

It’s dismaying when certain programs we know seem to find it necessary to do these things so often

I honestly don’t think they just arrived at the idea of Ice uniforms because of a bad season

This call was made in the off season I guarantee it… you don’t order up 150 + uniforms and helmets on the fly… lol come on

Dude... They were hinting at this prior to last season when they were preseason #17. Players were tweeting and on Instagram talking about it. These don't happen overnight. You're kidding, right?

Anyway. Very sharp alternate. I'd have made the face mask either royal blue or mustard gold though. Otherwise, well done

As expected, the uniforms are whatever. Not as good as the usual home or away.

Which is why it's so odd that we are wearing them for a game against Wake Forest.

You'd think if you were going to do something like this you'd have picked a bigger game that more people were likely to be watching.

My kid is so excited about this helmet. I mean I like different uniforms and changing things up (though I dont like the white helmet or the hideous white pants look) but the kids today man......football uniforms are like everything to them. Who was the Pitt coach who said the first question he gets is about uniforms and shoes? I think Capel maybe.

When did young "kids" start liking white? They usually seemed to want cool, loud colors, like our regular unis, to me white always seemed like an old people thing.

if we want to be honest, the target market for these uniforms are the youth, not old dudes on blogs lol. All white for whatever reason resonates with recruits. It's the influence of hip hop culture, specifically why they keep referencing the term "icy".
Whatever the target market is for the unis, from a marketing perspective, don't you have to call them something other than "plain white"?

Icy white sounds good to me.

I kinda like them.

Your alternates need to look like you. Still keeps the Pitt brand.

It passes.

I never loved the yellow helmets on the road. I actually thought Vegas gold was a better road look (don’t get me wrong, the current colors and home uniform is the best in football)

When are the kids going to like them enough to start getting better recruits?

I like the white pants but wish we stuck with the gold helmet because THAT is the defining asset of our brand. Personally, I liked this look and would love to see it with the new colors.

See what happens when you wear colors against your blood ?

you get a transfer that ............oh nevermind.

Anyone here watching the Washington-Arizona State game? The Huskies have a really cool monochrome purple uniform that I think looks nice. It’s different, but not too noisy. I’d be interested to see what a shiny blue helmet with a shiny gold facemask and Pitt script logo looks like.
