Another potential big

There are 1100 potential players in the portal, but you have to have a staff that can recruit. Not happening
Not hearing a lot of zoom calls or virtual visits.

It is extremely disappointing repeatedly hearing the Head Coach not involved in the initial contact,

That is poor practice that needs change immediately. Our situation demands it.

Just because we aren’t hearing about them does not mean they are not happening. After all, coaches can’t discuss recruiting details.

I am not a fan of the staff but this is a good point. We have no idea besides what’s on Twitter and that is not a reliable place for all information. Problem is a zoom call is not like an official visit.

The same player had no contact by the Head Coach when first approached.

it appears to have worked out here, but I would not recommend it as a practice.

Too busy to pop on for the initial contact? Sure.

A lot of players are very open about who that have been contacted by and what other staffs are doing with them.

This is mostly public knowledge, readily available.

it appears were are doing less. Just my opinion.

Maybe that worked at Duke but this is a completely different environment. Adjust and adapt. I am not sure HCJC is doing that. Learning curve should have been year one.

It’s pretty clear that Milan made first contact with Gardner because he previously spent several years recruiting Gardner. I don’t think it was a random choice or due to Capel’s laziness (?) - it was an intentional, strategic one.

Would it have hurt to have the Head Coach pop on and say “something”?

The strategy to say the Head Coach will speak with you “soon” is a poor one.

We are well beyond the days where the head coach was the “closer”.

The Head Coach needs to immediately express his “own” big interest,

If you don’t......

Not a word about speaking with Capel:

Again, neither of those are coincidences either. Capel played at UNC with Daye’s uncle who he’s close with, and Milan recruited and coached Jasper at Charleston, who was always going to the SEC. We made contact with those guys in the first place because of the preexisting relationships. It makes sense to leverage those relationships during the initial contact.

I am not saying we should not try to take advantage of existing relationships with assistant coaches. Itwould be foolish not to.

It is equally as foolish for the Head Coach not to express his own big interest in the initial contact.

In an ego driven world, that is what it takes. A Rick Pitino talks to you on the initial contact, Jeff Capel does not? F that strategy. Recruits measure interest.

There have been several stories on Pgh Sports Now detailing initial contacts. Recruits are mentioning assistant coaches AND saying they have not spoken to Jeff Capel yet, but are looking forward to it.

OK so you believe recruiting is not the problem--then what is?

Or maybe you don't believe there is any problem?

I agree with Peak on this point. Capel needed to make improvements everywhere just to get to zero.

Given the situation, his overall recruiting has been fine to get Pitt back to average. The off the court stuff seems to indicate his first group of players weren't team first players and hurt the culture. They obviously have an eye for underrated talent with the guards and wings.

IMO, next years back court is better than what he's had in the first 3 years. The front court hasn't been good. Hugley has potential to help a bunch if he's around. Regardless, there's work to do.
