Ashton Gibbs/Mike Cook

Both alums have been named head coaches to Philly-area private schools that have produced D1 talent over the years. JC has publicly congratulated both of them. Hope this connection develops.
Why would it? Did he consider either at any point for a staff position?

One would think that have alums who view the program favorably as coaches as high schools in Pitt's recruiting territory would be a good thing. No?

Why bother. He’s still on his silly mission of trying to turn everyone.

And I have no clue what being considered for a position would even have to do with it. If they did get interviewed and didn’t get the job then the spin would be that they’re probably disgruntled and gonna keep kids away from Pitt. And if they got hired then obviously it’s all moot and we’re not even discussing it.

Indeed. As Ramon is still on staff and Capel seems to have made an effort to connect with Pitt alums from the golden years. So it's not like he'd say no to having a Pitt guy on staff.

Loved Mike Cook. Saw him for 2 years at ECU. The guy was a great player, we just couldnt put anything around him and he did what was best for him. That injury to him that year at Pitt really hurt us. The most significant injury in Pitt history.

I will go to my grave convinced that the 2008 team with a healthy Cook and Fields would've been even better than the 2009 Elite 8 team.

Agreed....that Cook injury really hurt us. I was so disappointed when it occurred. We really looked like a great team when he was healthy.

Very possible. Where I might not agree is how much better Fields, Blair and Young were in 2009 than 2008.

Funny but true story. I used to play this speed word game For years against random people on the web. I ended up playing this guy “cook31” who kicked my ass 8 of 10 games but I didn’t care because I’m so competitive. We ended up playing each other almost exclusively for a year and would comment to each other good game etc. hell this guy could have lived in Australia for all I knew. Then I beat him and commented that I was leaving for a college hoops game that night. He responded who? I said I’m a Pitt Panther fan and season ticket holder. He said, I’m mike cook #31 and played for Pitt. I responded your kidding me. He said no I’m not H2P! Unbelievable but let me tell you - Mike is a VERY smart man and has an unbelievable grasp of vocabulary. same with Gil Brown who Mike set me up to play the same game.

IMO Cook+Ramon+Benjamin were a better supporting cast than Jermaine Dixon, even with everyone else being a year older.

An interesting debate. My rebuttal would be how much better Blair was the following year but I understand what you are saying as well.

One thing to your point is how good Pitt was to run the table in the BET, and that was without Cook.

An overall point is that the 2007-2008 was extremely good before Cook when down and was pretty great at the end (and that was without Cook). Because they lost in the NCAA tournament first weekend, they aren't remembered among the best Pitt teams (but losing a game or so too early in the Tournament was unfortunately too clear of an important hallmark among Dixon's otherwise tremendous success at Pitt). Even without Cook, Pitt laid an egg against Michigan State, a team Pitt should have beaten. But Izzo challenged Pitt was a zone, and Ramon just wasn't up to the challenge.

Refuse to believe Cook is a big enough nerd to play online word games against random people on the web.

Don’t be so dogmatic, I ended up playing Gill Brown also. Not as good as Mike was though But still good.
