Anyone read about the killing of a member of a HS track team member in Texas, Austin Metcalf.

Could be an interesting case. Texas has a stand your ground law, so could this be considered self defense within that law?

I'm of the opinion that lethal force is rarely acceptable. With only knowing the details that have been reported, this looks like a clear case of 3rd degree murder / manslaughter to me.

Thoughts?

Help me understand this? I haven’t heard a thing about it. I just did a search on CNN’s Twitter account and it rendered no results.

I searched “Austin metcalf” on NYT, it rendered 0 results.

I searched The Atlantic and it returned 0 results.

I searched MSNBC and it yielded 0 results.

Does this person exist? What am I missing?

You are missing that thousands of people die every day and thousands of homicides every year. Wanting the media to turn every case into a national sensation is dumb. The market crash will lead to numerous suicides, poverty, drug seeking behavior. And yet not mentioned as a top headline on Fox News.

And this was on CNN

Yeah self defense. The excuses that are made for the 6 pct who commit over 60 pct of the crimes. Next up he called me an N word

I just did a search of the word “tariff” on Fox News and it yielded 100’s of returns.

Just stop. I didn't bring this up to talk about what news sources are or aren't reporting it. I brought it up because there are some interesting angles to the story that may transcend one's typical political viewpoint. It is a tragic story, but an interesting one nonetheless.

From my understanding in these stand your ground states, if 2 people get into a normal fight and then 1 of them shoots, stabs, or otherwise kills the other, it's basically legal. Stabbing or shooting someone during a fight seems like unreasonable force but the "feared for my life" burden is very low. I think this kid gets basically a wrist slap, which is ashame because you shouldn't stab someone during a normal HS fight.

Stop what? I know nothing about this story because it’s not being covered by the first 3-4 sources I turned to. I was just asking. First I’ve heard of it.

Now all the sudden stand your ground is a legitimate defense. Wonder why

Let’s see. One kid said to the other kid you’re in the wrong tent. The other kid took out a knife and stabbed him in the heart. At a HS track meet. Now why would you bring a knife to a HS track meet ?

I think it could be a fascinating case. Will race play a role? Will a Bonfire of the Vanities like PR battle ensue? Will good ole boys in Texas defend this as a stand your ground? Will so called civil rights leaders swallow their Trayvon Martin outrage and agree that the kid was wrong in using lethal force? Does a gun vs knife play a role here? If there is a law against having a knife on school property mean that stand your ground can't apply?

I would think that if tariff-palooza weren't such a HUGE story, this one would be getting some major attention. Where is Nancy Grace when we need her?

Yeah. No need for a knife. Guns are what is needed.
