I DVR'd the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventes and am watching it now and I just saw what may possibly be the greatest single play in sports history, certainly one of the greatest soccer goals of all time. I'm watching it by myself and when I saw it I said "oh my God."

Juventes's Mario Mandzukic did something I've never seen and did it in the soccer equivalent of the Super Bowl against the world's best team:

a chested down, half-bicycle kick volley from the edge of the box to the opposite corner. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a better goal in soccer history which by default would have to make it one of the greatest plays in sports history. I mean this was absolutely sickening. I can't believe someone actually did that. The camera panned to Cristiano Ronaldo who had a look of disbelief and was shaking his head probably thinking he couldn't have possibly just seen that.

The immaculate reception, not only for the play it ended in, but for Steelers future.
Right church wrong pew!!!
Jmo but vote goes for Harrison's Super Bowl run.
Now that's a close one to somebody kiiicking thee soccer ball...but I'm sticking to it!!!

( you know everybody of age in Pgh saw Franco on TV, but it was blacked out in the Pgh Market. Friends drove us to Meadville to watch the game).

About 20 Dorsett TD's better. And Hugh Green's leg scissors takedown of a ND punter. Plus, every Billy Knight jumpshot, Marino to Brown and Pitt's Penn Relays win.

How about Tony's 99 yd run from the LOS in there too. That was close to kiiiicking thee ball.

As The Gunner used to say about a 3 unassisted put out inning by a fielder:

It can be tied but it can never be broken.

I checked it out and it was a great scoring play in a big game but IMHO nowhere near the greatest play in sports history. I've seen many great scoring soccer plays similar to that that were game winners.

But How about Bill Maz's seventh game 9th inning World Series winning home run, Lynn Swann's super bowl catches. The immaculate reception, Don Larsen's World Series perfect game, Willie Mays's 1954 World Series catch, the many Pele's goals, Babe Ruth's called World Series Home Run against the Cubs, the first ascent of Mt Everest in 1954 without an oxygen mask by Edmund Hilliary, Santonio Holmes' winning Super Bowl catch and James Harrison's super bowl TD interception and return for a 100 yd TD.

Just a few that come to my mind on a Sunday Afternoon.

Not only that SMF, but the ball was served in and the goal scorer was the third player that played the ball without it ever hitting the ground. You probably have to be a soccer fan to appreciate it...but it was one of the sickest things ever in sports.

No. It's soccer SMF. It's soccer.

You seem to me to be making a very good point, but I'm not sure what you mean by sickest thing ever in sports? Did you mean slickest?

Another great moment in sports is Rocky Marciano's knockout in the 13th round of the then current Heavy Weight Champion who was way ahead in the scoring of the fight and Rocky did it with one punch that totally knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott.

That totally upset many sports fans, sports reporters and the social frabric of a racially devided country.

Jack Nicklaus' 1iron into #17 at Pebble Beach to clinch another US Open..a heavy wind off the Pacific right in his face forcing him to use that 1 iron, on a hole which usually could have been reached with an 8.

As Bobby Jones said about Jack , he plays a game of which I am not familiar

And Doug Flutie's Hail Mary.
I was pissed being a big fan of the U but that is an all timer.

Haha. No. I meant what I said. It was sick as in good. Really good. SMF nailed it with his opinion, given the stage it was on, etc. I would just never compare it to any achievement in any other sport. Its just too tough to compare.

You're making me feel young. I am in my 40's. But in all seriousness, that goal was pretty filthy. And nasty.

Over fifty years ago when I came to NYC and having picked up "bad" as great, the NY'ers did not get it. I had to explain it to them. They looked at me strangely. The Pittsburgh'ers had it over the "bad a$$" NY'ers.

Def. a great goal, but they lost. Also, not all-time great. A volley off the chest from just outside the box is cool, but nothing everyone one the pitch coukdn't have hit in training.

I was thinking a 1980 hockey goal, or a Pele bicycle kick, but ricflair is right - the winner is Jesse Owens.

Also in consideration, 1972 shot for USSR that beat the USA.

NTOP couldn't even Score with a Soc Her.
I'm too good to play futbol...it's for dumbasses who stand around too much.

And Obama was a bantamweight as POTUS. He'd be looking for a soft spot on the canvas when the bell rings.

Surely you jest NTOP, in futbol they stand around too much? Guess in 'football' where there is a break after every 5 second play, taking 30 seconds to get the next play off, nobody stands around, haha.

I enjoy both sports immensely, it can be amazing when someone says a 3-2 soccer game is boring, but a 17-14 football game is tremendous. Basically the same level of scoring, it's just that in futbol, the ball is constantly moving, except when a player lays on the ground writhing in pain trying to draw a card on the opponent.

Well....they trot a bit, too. My cure for futbol is to make midfield like midcourt in hoops....no over & back allowed. Possession goes to the other team.
And those goofy team songs....all sound like Rock-a-Bye Baby to me. ZZZzzzzzzzzzz.
At least in FOOTBALL, that standing around means they have time to plan some real action.

From the Cheap Seats; basically just need to modify the off side rule some. If the ball is past midfield, no offside. That would open up the game.

Do both. Kicking the ball BACK to your goalie while protecting a lead is like icing in hockey or the 4-corners in hoops. Soccer in the U.S. used to attract guys too small or slow for football. Not anymore...lots of great athletes.

I think you are right NTOP. We are seeing it today locally. Kids that don't cut it in soccer are playing Lacrosse.

But you comment about dropping the ball from the offensive zone back to the keeper in soccer is way over exaggerated. We've been having these discussions for a couple years, and me being cognizant of your thoughts, I watch for it. It happens about as often as a team inbounding the basketball into the backcourt.

If they planted like 3, just 3, maybe, mines on each soccer pitch, unknownst to the players where they are, it would make it more interesting and exciting.
