Best true freshmen ever @ Pitt?

I am not putting him up there on the level of a Dorsett or a Green, but I want to give a shout out to an outstanding free safety and 4-year starter, Tom Flynn from Penn Hills.

Tom played several years in the NFL and was a Super Bowl Champion with the New York Giants.
Tommy Flynn was one of my favs ... good reference

Perhaps because his freshman year was the same as mine but Tom Tumilty had a great 91 season.

It could be argued that his and Martin’s injures in 92 sealed Hackett’s fate. Had they been more available in 92- perhaps the team goes say 6-6 or 7-5 and they keep Hackett around for another year

Nah, Hackett was such a bad coach that even if both were healthy in 1992 that team still finishes with a losing record. Pitt lost to Rutgers with Curtis that year. With AVP, Martin, Jells and that O-line Pitt NEVER should have lost to that pathetic Knights squad.

I feel like you can’t call a player that went to prep school as a true freshman. I don’t know why but still feel this way.

Green was before my time, my vote is for Bryant, his freshman year was awesome. I still remember that va tech game at pitt stadium, he was unstoppable.

Bryant couldn’t even sniff Dorsett.

Well.....I don't feel, I know you are wrong. High School is different than college. What justification is that? A true freshman is one who did not redshirt his FR year

Cause instead of going to college after their st year, they went to a prep school. It’s like saying Brian shorter was a true freshman after prop 48. It’s not your ‘true freshman’ year.

Still.....that is a whole different level. Was Trey McGowens a "true freshman" this year? How about kids held back a year? Again, it is not what you think here, but what is.

why wouldn’t McGowens be a true freshmen? Did he go to high school for 4 years then go to prep school in his 5th year? If so, then no, I wouldn’t consider him a true freshmen.

Going the prep route is equivalent to a RS. They sell you and your family on this exact phrase.

I get the rules and nomenclature.

I was just looking for the players who came straight from hs to pitt and performed well.

It's kind of stupid to put that qualifier on it.

Tony Dorsett and it's not even close.

Wow! Tough crowd.

No doubt Tony was a special, special talent who indeed had a monstrous 1st year. He is certainly one of the greatest offensive players to ever play college football.

Still, it’s good to know that not everyone agrees with you (including the author of this list I am reposting from above) about it being “Not even close” when comparing TD to other 1st year Panther performances.

Even though he didn't stick around Brian Davis was pretty amazing as a freshman. Had he stuck around he might have been better than TD....

The more time that goes by it seems like the Brian Davis legend continues to grow. In reality he had that one real nice game, but for the season he had less than 300 yards rushing in total.

I would love to see this incredible run agsinst bc. I’ve looked for it on YouTube but had no luck.

Yes but he didn't play that much. That backfield was loaded. I was on those teams and it was amazing the talent. Had he kept his nose clean he clearly could have been one of the greatest on pure talent alone

not many people know this but he was given yet another try out with the browns, a few years after he left pitt. think schottenheimer was coach and for whatever reason, they brought him into camp and gave him another shot, obviously it didn't work out..

Tony Dorsett was 19 years and 4 months+ when he started his first game for Pitt as a true freshman.

Dion Lewis, even with that year of prep, was 18 years and 11 months when he started his first game at Pitt. If he didn't have that year of prep, he'd have had 18 fewer months of physical maturity than Dorsett during his true freshman season.

Discounting someone just because they went to prep school is dumb.

Well we could move the goalposts all we want.

Prep school kids have more experience than kids who come straight from hs.

It's no different than juco except in semantics.

best I could do here for Brian Davis highlights.. Go to the 2:00 mark, he gets some carries late in the game.. What could have been.
