I remember growing up this school was an absolute WPIAL juggernaut in hoops. I think ex Cowboys/Packers coach Mike McCarthy went here. What happened to them?

I vaguely remembered this team, I think they had some Puerto Rican immigrants or something on the team. But they were really good.

Yes, McCarthy is an alum.

I remember that team. Fun to watch, very up tempo. I think the coaches name was Mannion but they called him Magoo or something like that? Had some type of connection to Puerto Rico and brought in a few players from there (No, I'm not going to get into that whole private school recruiting debate). Kike Rivera was really good and was a big star at LaRoche. Had a few bigger offers but stayed local because of a girlfriend I believe. Recently inducted to their hall of fame, He took some classes at Pitt and met him there, nice guy, super talented.

Rivera was a star, but the core of the team was all home grown, Masley, McCallister and the legendary Bobby Lynch. McCallister also had an older brother that played and was pretty good. Same year as McCarthy I think. Masley was really good in high school, went to Clarion but I don't think he did much there.

I still think the WPIAL was a lot more interesting with just 3 classes, 4 max. This 6A stuff, too diluted. Hard to believe a small school like Boyle could win a championship at the second highest classification at the time. I think they maybe beat Clairton who had Lloyd Moore who was one of the few parade all-americans in basketball from the area. Very strange recruitment from what I recall.

So much going on in late 70's-early 80's sports in Pittsburgh that WPIAL basketball from that era gets short sighted a bit. The last of the really big time local players played in the early 80's. Although a few decent players came out in the mid 80's (Miller, Porter, Marlon Ferguson to name a few)

And to answer your question, like many Catholic schools in the area, population shifts, lack of enrollment, and poor finances doomed them. But it was fun while it lasted.

Was there a better name than the Boyle Lancers.

Looking at the teams and the playoffs, it is weird but 5A is MUCH better than 6A in the WPIAL and 4A is likely better than 6A. The one guy on Twitter that posts all of these old Post Gazette and Pittsburgh Press articles is a great follow.

It is interesting to see alot of references to high schools who are no longer there.

Chago Gotay was one of the kids I think. Can’t remember the other PR kid. May have been Rivera as you mentioned.

Montanez played during the years of the catholic league . Canevin with 4 year starter tommy clements was a juggernaut . Pitt amd Duquesne had rosters full of local kids .

I seem to recall more. Jose Belardo. Another kid named Gelpi (not sure if his first name was Juan or Jean), but maybe they were a different year.

The late Monk Bonasorte went to Bishop Boyle. Then was an All-American safety @ FSU. Played in the old USFL a couple years. Was longtime Ass't. AD A FSU for football operations. Passed away several years ago from cancer.
RIP, Monk

I was a frosh at Boyle when we won states in 1982. The team was a juggernaut. Chago Gotay Kike Rivera Masley Lynch and McCallister. An iron five for sure.

Sat bench the next year for Varsity and played JV. Team was still good but after losing 4 seniors struggled and lost in semis of WPIAL. Played with Joe McCarthy (younger brother of Mike on that team) he passed away sadly a few years back.

Boyle made a nice run in 1979 if I recall losing in State Semifinals. Eddie McCallister, Buddie Hobart were a few of the guys on that team.

Good times. Magee certainly an interesting character as coach. His face would change to different shades of purple from all the yellilng/screaming he did on the bench

The great thing about Boyle was we played our home games in a friggen grade school gym across the alley (St Mary Magdalene). It was small but man was that place packed on a friday night for games. Standing room only people line up along the baseline all around the gym. People knew they had to get their early so even the JV games were packed!
