** Exhibit A: January 22, 2020. Pitt Panther Men's Basketball is 4-4 in the ACC.

** Exhibit B: Pitt Panther Men's Basketball finished the 2019-2020 season at 3-15 in the ACC.

** As the author and manager of these proceedings, I will not allow any other evidence into the case.

** I am sure there are those in the Panther public who are demanding that more facts be placed into evidence.

** One might recognize the call to hear testimony about losing a ten point lead in the final four minutes. Maybe some might want evidence introduced surrounding the notion that the Panthers just slipped by one of the worst teams in the league in the final seconds on our home court.

** I’ll bet there are those who witnessed another poor start by the Panthers, or a defense that still struggles to cover corner shooters.

** There is likely another constituency still who wish to put forth into the record that our combination of “fives” combined for a measly seven points and an equal number of rebounds.

** I’ll hear none of it.

** From the place from where we once came over the last two years, our Panthers continue to improve. Case closed.

** There is other supporting evidence for my case.

** Ryan played his most efficient minutes of the year and finally decided to take the winning shot to a wonderful result.

** Justin played his most consistent and best all-around game of the season. He’s a shoe-in for the ACC All Freshman Team and might even be putting himself in the running for the top spot.

** Xavier played much more like a “true point guard” than many would have even thought capable just a few games ago.

** Trey continued his stretch of big shot making that has become somewhat commonplace for him in this new year.

** And most importantly, Au’Diese is proving to those who spoke poorly about his offensive ability early in the season that they judged him far too soon. He’s averaging over 10 PPG in his last 6 contests and is shooting 3-7 from three in the same time frame.

** Our Panthers will face 12 more ACC trials this year. I’m pretty convinced now the verdict will fall in our favor in at least four of them, and maybe one or two more than that.

** For this Panther fan, knowing I expected seven wins in the ACC this year, I’m pretty enthused with the bigger picture this result tonight should indicate.

** And this night, I’ll once again resist efforts to impeach our Panthers any further, even for their more obvious transgressions.

** I confess that in another term, I may not treat the Panthers with such leniency. A year from now, I might even think of a performance like we witnessed tonight as a bit troubling.

** But for the case at this point in time, a simple two point victory earned in the last four seconds of the closing argument is nothing short of a monumental judgement in favor of Coach Capel and the Panthers.

** Congrats to all of them for the wonderful outcome today. Let’s take Jimmy B to court on Saturday!

For the most part I agree with you. This team has come a long way in two seasons. But it still has a long way to go.

But one thing I will disagree with you on:

Justin played his most consistent and best all-around game of the season. He’s a shoe-in for the ACC All Freshman Team and might even be putting himself in the running for the top spot.

In the running for the top spot? Was Vernon Carey in some sort of accident that will cause him to miss the rest of the season that I didn't hear about? Carey has a chance to be the national player of the year. Justin, well, does not.

Sure ... but don’t ruin the vibe!

Only able to listen to the game out here in Portland (Xfinity...thank you)...and though Billy had problems covering the game, it sounded like we continued to hustle and move the ball (especially after Curtis called them out for too much floating the ball on drives early in the first half...not that they could hear Curtis)...

I appreciate they play hard with grit and determination and Coach Capel seems to have a good handle on this team and hearing his interactions with the media is refreshingly honest (and thankfully, lacks traditional coach speak).

As we age, and look at the record in a few years we’ll see a W and not the struggle the game was a times...it’s a W!

Hail to PITT!

Toney became my current favorite player with his defense in the Louisville game against Nwora. Him adding offense is just glorious icing on the cake in my book.

Our young kids are encouraging. Capel is recruiting well, in 2 years Pitt could be formidable, maybe next year.

somebody on this board predicted Toney was going to start scoring more and hitting 3 pointers, don’t quite remember who ::)

But the resident smartest basketball mind from hoopieville predicted that he would need to transfer out to a lower level school to be productive....

Don't disagree.

I didn't predict he'd transfer. I said guys that arent starting or arent producing often transfer and that was the case with Toney. As long as he is starting and playing well, he isnt going anywhere. But in today's game, when guys arent starting, they often transfer. Transferring is an epidemic. Some of you guys are so bad with reading comprehension. I cant make these posts much easier to understand.

What's crazy is Pitt had their typical bad start and bad finish and we won. BC outscored us by 23 during a stretch in the beginning and end of the games but we were good enough in the middle.

I didn't know Popovic was playing. He didnt do a ton but he is a solid 5. I would have been more worried about this game had I known that. He is better than any 5 we've had since Gary McGhee (besides Steven Adams). I'm not counting Young and Zanna as 5's. They were 4's playing out of position though Zanna did well at the 5

As great as Justin has been, I feel like in the minutes Coulibaly was in (didn’t realize it was 8 - as many as he’s played in all other ACC games combined) he just looked lost.

Hoping him and Drumgoole can find their footing, but I’m guessing next year will tell us a lot as they’ll have some of the new kids on too to compete with for minutes.

I get they’re only freshmen though and they won’t all come in and contribute in a meaningful way right off the bat like Justin or X/Trey/Au’diese last year, can recall some players in the Dixon era who were nonexistent or didn’t look good as freshmen too but improved over their time here.

Great Summary as always DT and this year -- just celebrating every win. The nice thing is I haven't felt any deficit was too large for us to come back even against Miami. Hope we don't get too overwhelmed by the Carrier Dome environment this weekend and can take it to Syracuse.

We need our shooters to shoot this weekend, be really curious how we attack this zone.

Any ACC win is a good win period !

Losing those two turnovers in the last minute is troubling , but taking the ball down and having Ryan bury the winning shot far outweighs the turnovers .

Had X ,Trey & Toney started the season as they are currently playing there’d be no talk of them not taking a step forward .

Justine C is one of those guys who just knows where to be and as his all around play continues to improve he could become a special player .

I have no doubt that in two years HCJC will have a roster talented enough to put Pitt in the conversation with the other top programs in the ACC for the entire time he remains at Pitt .

Seeing how few people are in the stands is quite sad , how can Scott Barnes be employed ?

Hosted by Duq at LaRoche

Would be at the Pete or potentially PPG if Duquesne was the higher seed but that game, for an NIT game, would have an event-type feel. Strange to say that about an NIT game but its the perfect scenario for the NIT. Duquesne's best team in 4 decades. Pitt's up and coming team excited to have risen from the dead. I think it would sell out The Pete and draw 15K to PPG

I'll admit to being one of those who was down on Toney at the beginning of the year. But of course, that was when he was clanking threes left and right. To his credit, he is now playing within himself and primarily looking to score on the inside. That makes him a very necessary and good complement to XTrey.

I must admit I don’t like what I’m seeing in Coulibaly.

He had an absolutely brutal stretch last night in which coming out of a timeout X threw him a bounce pass from the top of the key. He promptly allowed it to go right through his legs for a turnover. Then when BC came down he got lost on a pick and roll and promptly allowed a dunk.

With brown and Hamilton in foul trouble Capel didn’t really have much of a choice but that was not an encouraging performance.

All in all it was kind of a weird game but it’s tough to win in conference and they got the win which was all that mattered. Love where we are headed Saturday is HUGE.

At least I'm entertained. Looking at the remaining schedule, I'm chalking Duke up as a loss. I'm sure we'll lose many more, but for the life of me I don't know which ones. Should be a wild/fun/frustrating/unpredictable ride.

Edit: Thinking of our schedule to date: we've already played FSU once, Louisville twice, and UNC twice (though they are unexpectedly putrid). That means several of our most challenging games are behind us considering we only play Duke once. After that, who really scares you? UVA will be an ugly game because they still defend well, but they don't have the scoring they did last year. And we could lose to any of VTech/Clemson/ND on any given night, but we could also beat them. The conference is truly a mess.

I'm disappointed in Coulibaly, too. But after seeing guys like Wanamaker, McGhee and Gray in their freshman seasons, I'll never give up on a guy midway through his first year. I really don't think he'll be a complete bust like Epps or Gilbert, he seems to have enough potential to be a feasible back up, at least, by year 3 and 4.

In defense of Couilbaly, he was the guy in the middle of the zone when that brutal turnover occurred. There is no way he was the best guy to handle a zone, and it showed. He was put in a position to fail.

That being said he royally effed up on defense several times, and those mistakes led to BC baskets.

Then again i think everyone screwed up horribly on defense at least once in the first half.

I liked Popovic game. nice player. we are a clear NCAA team with him.

The best Pitt can finish is 5-7 the rest of the way looking at the schedule imo.
That would be 18-13 . It could get ugly as we have not proven much on the road, and with games coming @ Syracuse, Duke, Notre Dame, VT , FSU, NCState , and GT.

I earlier in the year spoke highly of Toney's athleticism and his excellent
defense. However at that point I thought he was a liability with his
outside jump shot. I posted that he should limit his shooting to 8-12
footers along with his drives to the hoop. His shooting technique was
good as evidenced by his solid free throw shooting at the time 70+%.
I also posted he should lay off the threes. Lately however he has been
making those same threes. I'm glad to see it, but I still don't want him
to be the first, second, or third option when it comes to threes. He's
shooting less than 30% on threes (26%). However he's a very good
48% from the field. I really like him as a player, and hopefully the
newly found shot making continues.

Like I posted, Toney is 3-7 from three in his last 6 games. So he’s being perfectly selective with his three point shot attempts.

Actually...his overall shooting 35-58 overall (60%) in his last 11 games.

So he’s being selective and effective.
