Bowl Game opt outs

It's best to view these bowls in bad faith. If you win, great game. If you lose - "who cares bowls don't matter"

They're exhibition games with the exception of the CFP. No one watches except families of the players and a few die hard fans. Winning or losing one doesn't move the needle. When they can finally get to a real playoff system with at least 16 teams in the field, they might start meaning something again. No wonder the better players opt out.

Yeah, this will be the first year I don't even watch the game. I just picture UCLA's varsity or semi-varsity team celebrating a throttling of our 9th grade or JV team and it irks me. Like Michigan State fans flexing over beating our non-experienced 3rd string QB last year... GTFOOH. If somehow we win, I'll go back and watch it a few times. But I'm not putting myself through the frustration if I don't have to. These games have ran their course (for me, personally; not intending to sound like I'm speaking on anyone else's behalf).

I'm not sure why they're considered more meaningless than regular season games when a team is out of conference contention (I'm guessing it's because they're played so much later and guys would rather use that time to train for the draft or not risk injury if they're hitting the transfer market), but the players have spoken and they certainly are. And if they don't care, then I don't either. No big deal. Just is what it is.

This statement couldn't be more false. Plenty of people will watch, which is why they have all these bowl games in the first place. A Central Michigan / Wash St. Sun Bowl had 2.85 million viewers last year.

Sun Bowl so far:
Pitt:
Slovis
Kancey

UCLA:
None

Really shocking when looking at other bowls where most have 8-10 per team opting out or injured

https://www.fantasypros.com/2022/12...r-opt-out-tracker-head-coaching-changes-2022/
I'm guessing Morgan and Tallandier won't be playing for Pitt either, since they are transferring. And of course, we'll find out a bunch more names closer to the game (some are speculated above). Pitt does do a good job of getting the opt-outs to keep it quiet, I'm guessing for gamesmanship.

We tend to lose our bowls in even the best situations, so if UCLA boosters insanely decided to pay all their players mega bonuses to participate in this crap game…whoops…I mean, of course, if UCLA players all prayed and meditated and felt the warm team spirit and brotherhood to go out there and fight, fight, fight for the dear old Bruins and the glory of this, ugh, game(yeah I’ve stolen somewhat from our own fight song but I’m sure theirs is not much different) … despite every other program everywhere seeing disgustingly large portions of their teams refusing to fulfill what should be an understood obligation of taking a scholarship …I mean, of course “wisely and legitimately opting out”… then, we have that not-invalid excuse for getting slaughtered going for us. Which is nice. Nice, because we’ll get slaughtered.

To show how ridiculous his claim is and to put those numbers in perspective College Basketball averaged 1.25 million on CBS which was less viewers than the Cure Bowl. That game featured EMU and Liberty. Even coach K final game in Cameron Indoor which was also the highest rated regular season basketball drew 3.98 million which was the same as the Alamo bowl.

our non-experienced 2nd string QB...There, I fixed it for you.

I don't care about your stats. Pitt fans that I've known for the last 50 years....die hard Pitt fans, won't be watching it. Who knows how those stats were compiled. All I know is that of the Pitt fans I know, most (more than 90%) won't be watching the game. It's like any other exhibition game. But if you think it's worth watching our bench playing someone, go for it. Good luck to them and hope they don't get hurt.

Of course you don't care about stats that prove your baseless claim is absurd.

It won't matter if you and a couple of your buddies don't watch, because they'll be 3 million other sets of eyeballs to take your place.

I'll go watch a spring game which is a glorified practice. Why wouldn't I watch a bowl game against UCLA? I don't have any Pitt fan friends who won't be watching the game.

They will probably be posting on this board about how they aren't watching the game in protest to opt outs.

I’ll watch as many bowl games as I can. Opt outs give you the nest man up mentality. i watched Penn State and Arkansas last year and PSU had their starting left tackle out so you got your first look at that young left tackle who ended up being a stud this year. The coaching staff has a month to build an offense around Yarnell. Let’s see what the kids got

That is BS. Almost all Pitt fans will watch. If you are not a Pitt fan, then do not watch.

Beville was 3rd string. He played most of the game.
I believe the depth chart for that game says otherwise...If not then who was #2?..... Patti, ?? , Beville. I hope you are not counting the kid who quit the team for personal protection reasons because that would make your post incorrect.

Ha, I figured you might be going there. I think we know what I meant. Similarly, I won't consider us to be playing with QB1 in this Sun Bowl.

Get over yourself. I've been a Pitt fan, attending football and basketball games, when Pitt sucked so bad there were 10,000 in the stadium....Pitt Stadium. I've been a Pitt fan longer than you've probably been alive. I've seen it all and now with how college sports has devolved, it doesn't matter all that much to me. I see where you're coming from and I respect that. At least respect that I'm not in that camp any longer. Like I said, I've seen too much to keep getting kicked in the nuts. And now it's all of what they call college sports.

And no, I won't be watching some lame, leftist programming on TV instead of the game. I do know I'll be at a real basketball game earlier in the day when Pitt plays UNC. I think that evening my wife and I have plans for dinner with my best friend and his wife at a very nice restaurant, and they're both Pitt alum.

Since you aren't going to watch you tried to make the generalization that nobody was going to watch. That's simply not true, at all.

I couldn't care less if you watch, and offered no opinion on your use of time. I simply pointed out that your assumption that nobody was going to watch wasn't remotely close to reality.

I was trying to post my opinion on how college sports in general has devolved into nothing resembling true amateur athletics. In general, people are losing interest in that sham, unless they have money on it. I don't bet so I won't be putting money on any game. Yes, there will be people watching the game. I don't think as many as you might think, however.

We're good, though. I understand what you're saying so let's leave it at that.

I think college football and basketball are going to be ruined until they get this portal and nil situation figured out. Because of how the rules are now we will never see the magic of a Steph curry at Davidson traveling with the school for their first ever sweet 16 or Ja Morant at a random school why? Because as soon as any freshman has success on that level a bigger school will recruit them and pay them to come there. It’s terrible for college sports. If these guys want to be pro so bad just playing the XFL or play in the G league

The Sun Bowl is at 2pm.

So it seems impossible that no UCLA players opt out of this thing. Would the school have asked him to hold off to give enough chance to sell tickets? Would their fans be that gullible? Obviously our fans aren’t 😄

I definitely won't be watching then since I'm sure I'll either be at the Pitt-UNC game or just leaving, since that's at noon. Then when I get home, I'll be leaving to meet our friends and later for dinner. But I don't need to explain that. Even if I wanted to watch it badly, I won't be able to.

UCLA entire team will be in Mexico on a cocaine run. That’s why they haven’t opted out. They want to take the free plane ride and then do what they have to do. Seriously, many members of their team won’t be into the game even if they are dressed and scheduled to participate. It’s a meaningless bowl game like all of the other bowl games.

Now let’s win that ladies volleyball semifinal !!!

College football will still get viewers though. College basketball has become the MLS/NHL. Its really sad. I feel like I lost a good friend.
