Can you believe it?

I don’t care that PSU beat Nebraska twice, Pitt and Nebraska were the best teams in the country this year and it sucks that we never got to see the matchup.

This is what I mean when I say “same old Pitt”. It’s just a defense mechanism to ease the pain of another heartbreak.

It’s not a knock on our ladies.

It’s whatever it is that we as fans have to endure year after year with our teams

Some call it Pitting. I just call it same old Pitt. It’s all I can say when something unexpectedly bad happens.

We’ve had really good volleyball teams the past several years. We had a chance with one of those teams 5 years ago to play a final four at home. It didn’t work out.

This year, with perhaps our best team we ever had, we have to face our arch rival in their gym in the semifinal, taking away some of the edge we had and frankly earned. Louisville lost 5 times afterall and yet gets awarded.

We will continue to have good teams.

But when we have a “generational” type team again, it’ll probably be in a year Nebraska has a great team and the final four is in Omaha.

Because we are Pitt.

And yes if Joe Starkey writes an article about PSU this year winning the whole thing…it won’t be in an effort to rub salt in a wound. Afterall this Pitt team has captured his heart. It will be about why this kind of thing always seems to happen to Pitt.

I've read enough of your posts to know what a solid Pitt fan you are, what an enthusiastic volleyball fan you are, and what respect you have for the volleyball players. Totally out of context I could have misread "same old Pitt" as possibly insulting to the players, but I think most of us know that is not what you intended.

As for everything you say here, yeah, it really sucks. What is frustrating with Pitt athletics is how we somehow never get to see a team reach its ceiling. This team had a great season, these seniors had great careers, but they didn't quite reach their ceiling. That's where the commonality with the 2000s basketball teams comes into it. You think just once we could peak at the right moment, but it just never seems to happen. On a lesser scale, maybe the basketball team two years ago that beat Mississippi State and Iowa State in the tournament kind of reached its ceiling. But if so, mildly disappointing that seeing a Pitt team reach its ceiling is still short of a Sweet 16.

Pitt went 3-0 against Louisville and Penn State in the regular season. We're not building hypotheticals when we say that we know Pitt can beat these teams. Somehow in the biggest moments, there's just like an invisible barrier for Pitt. It can feel like it.

I think Pitt peaked earlier in the season than Louisville and the nitters bc we weren't getting transfers acclimated-bc we didn't have transfers who were key players like them. We improved as Bre and and Ryla got in the flow, but we had our all-American core players return. Also, both of those teams used freshmen setters who improved throughout the season. Ryla seemed to hit the freshman wall and became inconsequential late in the season. And for whatever reason, our serve reception just tanked the past few weeks. I don't know if it was nerves or what, but that's the main reason for losing in my opinion. VVG shanked at least 3 serve receptions resulting in aces. I was worried about that as I watched the last few matches. It's a shame-so close. And having the nitters advancing makes the loss sting even more. Welp, go Cards. H2P

The argument can be made that Pitt peaked in the match at Louisville on November 27, winning 3-1. The team did not play at that level again, unfortunately.

that 5-setter vs GT afterwards was an eye opener

as many have noted, Fairbanks - though never said aloud - was clearly not 100%. She had an amazing season and looked good in the tournament, not outstanding
