Jeff can't understand why we were getting so many fouls called on X and Trey in our first 4 ACC games and so few in our last 4. He said he has a theory but can't discuss it.

My guess his theory has nothing to do with all the zone being played against us in those games. If my guess is right, I will take an additional guess and guess his theory is wrong.

So I take it you thought the majority of the calls in our first 4 games were justified and a lot of justified calls in the last 4 games were missed?

You believe that?

IMHO, the answer is simple. Plenty of emphasis on officials calling games tightly during the first half of the season as instructed by the NCAA. Later officials revert back to the same old same old habits and swallow the whistle more frequently. It happens every season.

I think it has to do with more familiarity and seeing more zone defenses. I will allow for some personal differences in style of officiating.

I don't think it is like hockey, as you are suggesting and I don't think it is something Capel believes he can't talk openly about.

What if both theories are right? Obviously, Capel is posturing publically with the intent of getting a few extra calls. Of course when he says he can't talk about it, everyone knows what that means.

At the same time, we do see more zone. And it's a good strategy because driving to the basket is this teams bread n butter.

Yes, I do. As the season wears on they call as many fouls. It's not that they call bad fouls, they just don't call as many.

True, but zone defenses don't mean you only take three pointers. There are still several plays per game where X and Trey go to the rim, get hammered, and it doesn't get called. I find myself screaming at the TV because of it. Then you look at their FT numbers and it is alarming how big of a drop there has been in the number taken.

I’ll trust the basketball coach over you.

He's just doing what coaches do - work the refs to his team's benefit. I don't have a problem with that.
X has the most and Trey has the fourth most FTs in the conference. People get myopic, just don't watch other teams play and want to think what they want to think.
X and Tre and the Panthers took the league by surprise, the teams are adjusting, and it isn't just "the zone," its that there simply is nothing else around them and teams are building their defensive game plans around not giving them the drive, and being more careful with them when they get into the paint.

I do think there is a bit more to this than only opponents adjusting (including more zone). However, it is just not Pitt-specific. As I posted previously, the guys in the striped shirts are swallowing their whistles more as the season goes on. They do the same every season. They call games tightly (by the book) early in the season and then gradually back off and call fewer and fewer of the lesser degree of contact fouls as the season moves along--they are just backsliding into their officiating comfort zone.

2 of our recent games were against Duke and Syracuse. I don’t care who you are, those two teams are getting the calls 99.9% of the time.
