Capel on The Fan

If anyone listens to this interview and doesn’t think Pitt picked the right man
to lead the program then it’s your problem. I am very proud as an alum that
Jeff Capel is our coach.

Seems like a great guy. However, he seemed very very frustrated, venting almost. The 1 thing I actually did like about Stallings was his openness and honesty. Pitt fans hated him throwing Artis and Young under the bus. I didn't view it as such. I appreciated his honesty. I think Capel has some "Stallings" in him with regard to that. He even says he hates coachspeak and if you ask him something, he'll give you an honest answer.

The thing I wonder about Capel is whether he is coming across as too much of a "wise old guy" and less "fun." Kids just want to shoot a lot and go to the NBA. Maybe he isnt coming across as a "fun coach."

Just out of curiosity, I took a look back at what Stallings said at the time - notably, just before a 50 point loss to Louisville where they scored over 100 points. It's quite a bit different from what Capel said. Especially when you compare it to how Capel pretty much bent over backwards last year trying to get the players he inherited when he was hired to buy in to what he was selling.

“Right now, my assessment is the only thing it feels like they’ve bought into 100 percent is freedom on offense. Well, anybody could buy into that. That’s not a hard thing to buy into. That’s just human nature. Of course I would like to have freedom on offense. I haven’t gotten them to buy into the way we have to play defensively. I haven’t gotten them to buy into the way we need to communicate, the way we need to support each other, the way we have to fight when adversity hits. I haven’t been able to get them to do a number of other things yet the way they have to be done with what we have, with the makeup of our team in this league. That part has been a little frustrating. ...

I think what I probably overestimated would be the value of that experience and how it would pertain to leadership and how it would pertain to bringing other guys along. The successful programs I’ve been in and the teams I’ve had and the programs I’ve had, the older guys helped coach the younger guys because they had been through it. That doesn’t happen too much [here] right now. The idea in any program is the older guys — especially if they’re the better ones, which they are in our program right now — reach out to their teammates and help bring those guys along and help make those guys better. That part has been a little bit of a disappointment because there’s not a ton of that that goes on. You talk to guys about being more outward and making guys better. That’s just not in their nature. It’s not how they’ve been used to doing things, apparently.”

I missed the interview this AM but just listened now. I was not expecting this.

He sounds frustrated for sure---and for good reason, I guess. Never would have heard this type of interview from JD--I don't think.

Just my opinion but the 93.7thefan morning show hosts lay it on thick for JC.

Fun is earned. Give me the wise old guy any day. Someone who’s going to tell me the truth.
These guys haven’t approached the game with the level of intensity they needed this year and you can be sure the other team sees that. If you show up and you don’t play hard you give a lot of confidence to the other team. Intensity and hard play was our calling card last year and for long stretches this year we haven’t seen that from this team.
Let Capel deal with that human element of it if he wants to and he thinks that’s a play with this group of guys. Nobody is supposed to win or supposed to lose. No one is ordained to win or lose that’s why it’s called competition and people who compete and work hard turn out to be the winners. People who don’t turn out to be the people that the winners beat because they’re just 5 individuals out there. That’s just the way it is and that’s what makes competition so good Because that human element is really what’s at play every game.
You can have age, athleticism, maturity, depth, and a whole host of other things on your side but the reason there’s so many upsets in college basketball more than any other sport is people can make up those differences with fight and intensity.
Every year you have to reestablish your identity. Just because they were an intense fighting basketball team last year that means nothing. You have to reestablish that this year and that’s what Capel is trying to get this group to do

Stallings problem, or, OK, one of his problems, is that while he had no problem throwing Artis and Young and others under the bus he never seemed to hold himself to quite that high a standard. The difference is that when Capel is talking about his guys not playing well enough (for instance) after the West Virginia game he was also couching that in "we've got to do a better job coaching them" and "we've got to do a better job preparing the team" and stuff like that. Even if he doesn't really believe it (and I don't know if he does or not) he isn't just saying the players weren't cutting it, he made a point to say the coaches including himself weren't cutting it as well.

Stallings blamed the players first, last and always. At least Capel says the coaches have to share the blame with the players. That's huge difference, and one that I guarantee the players notice.

Stallings said all the coachspeak "I've got to coach them better" too.

He is Pitts coach for the next 15 years. Flashy? No. Solid? Classy? Reliable? Yes to all. Love the guy.
We’ll be very lucky to have him the next 15 years and as long as Duke doesn’t call you could be right. Pitt is in the ACC and seems to be giving him everything he needs
