Capel on XJ’s Tech

The original comparison was right on. Capel has tolerated several members of his team completely ignoring instructions (as did players on Stallings' inherited first team) and now he's set the precedent that you can still start and play 35+ MPG regardless of whether you listen to the coaches. You don't think that also rubs off on Champagnie or Horton?

Capel could have taken a hard line stance on this and benched XJ either of the two previous years and potentially solved this issue and been able to win more games right now. Instead the entire fanbase is turning on him and he's coaching for his job the next two seasons.

Saying "we can't afford to bench him" when HCJC is 3-17 in February across three seasons rings entirely hollow. What even would it matter if he sits XJ the rest of the season and we lose out? At least by forcing compliance from the roster HCJC is imposing his will. Right now he's losing AND letting the players walk all over him.

I wrote the same exact things back in 2017 and it absolutely shocks and depresses me that Capel isn't any better at this than Stallings was.
Yep

being a player friendly coach only matters if you’re winning or at least recruiting well

Hmmmm what’s the real reason this guy hates HCJC?
If you were asked by someone reviewing your job, why one of your subordinates continually makes the same mistake over and over and how you were gonna reach them and you basically said “I don’t know” it would also be a fireable offense.

@SoufOaklin4Life very fair in his assessments. I’ll never understand why people defend Capel on this site like he’s related to them. It makes no sense

I mean I really like Capel the person. I want him to do well. But in the end, you gotta win. I'll take a lying, cheating scumbag POS as a HC over a choir boy as long as they win.

Would you agree that someone might give their boss a different answer to that question in private, as opposed to what they would say to a reporter in public? Coaches have been known to use public statements to motivate their players. I have no idea if that is the case here, but it is certainly possible.

Possibly. Either way it’s a pathetic, desperate answer and signals he may not want X back or Vice versa

Then you tell the reporter it’s being handled internally-
You don’t throw the player under the bus publicly
One gets paid millions a year - the other is unpaid -
Guess which one needs to be protected publicly ?
Walt Harris was rightfully mocked for being “not my fault “ walt for saying things like “the players didn’t do what we coached them to do”
And he was far more successful than Capel

Given their personalities, I can see why Capel may have talked Horton up in public previously and is criticizing X now. I don't know how effective it is, but I understand it. Some guys don't have enough confidence, some guys have too much.
