Champagnie

VERY bad if true.

He is a high-motor, versatile defender who knocks down 3's but doesn't demand the ball. You can plug-and-play a guy like that from day 1 in a variety of situations and he'll be successful.

Should have filled the open ship.
With who gary?

Someone like Sampson George?

Well, we’ve already got one of those.

In my opinion, this just means AuDiese will play more at the four, and he was likely going to play there some anyway. No one Capel could have recruited as a fill in late would have been better.

I am going to disagree. I don't know how many they will win in ACC play but I believe they will be a better team overall and playing in a weaker than last year overall ACC and with a lot more favorable home ACC schedule. Based on that supposition I am expecting to see a floor of 5 regular season ACC wins.

My worst case scenario is something like 9-2 OOC + 5-15 ACC + 1-1 ACCT for an overall record of 15-18 with a best case scenario 3 games better at something like10-1 OOC + 7-13 ACC + 1-1 ACCT for an overall record of 18-15.

The starters need to play 35-plus minutes a game with this depth. Good thing there are plenty of bodies for practice.

You had an open ship, you knew Kene is injured, you brought in a player that has to sit, you have George who will likely not play. They found a Hamilton, they found a Murphy, they could have found someone. The fact that they didn't fill, does not prove they couldn't fill.

The white kid is a top 5 player on the team. Not sure what info you are getting but he definitely doesn’t stink.
The “info” I’m getting is from junior college coaches and conference USA coaches who coached against him. He was a reach. Being a top 5 player on a 3-15 acc team really shouldn’t be that big of an accomplishment, and if he’s one of our 5 leading minute getters were in trouble

JC needs to continue on his mission of upgrading the talent on this team , adding a body that couldn’t really contribute really accomplishes nothing . Pitt is better off filling that spot next yr with a better player . I doubt that losing JC for sometime will greatly affect the win total . X or Trey now that’s another thing .

Tyrese Samuel is looking pretty good right now

That's different. He's someone Pitt wanted but didn't get in November. @gary was talking about finding someone to fill the last scholarship. This would mean a spring pickup.

I just don't see the purpose of filling the scholarship with someone substandard "just in case." '

I'm not going to defend Capel's misses during the recruiting class. He had a tough year.

But picking up a warm body just doesn't make sense to me. That's even what Stallings did with guys like Boykins and George.

Like I said, I'd much rather see another year with Toney playing lots of four and see what we can get from Drumgoole and Murphy at the three. Especially Drumgoole. I'd rather him play more before he's ready than grabbing a 6-7 guy who will never be an ACC player.

The take I've heard is that his shooting is legit but his athleticism to play at this level will be a big question.

I know it was a high lite video, but it looks like he moves well to me. Runs to get open and knows how to use screens.

It also seemed he played very well in Italy, though competition was questionable.

He did play at Charlotte as a freshman. That is not low level.

Playing division 1 basketball for any school IS an accomplishment.

I do think our walk on guards are better than they have been in the past. I also see we added another one in Chayce Smith.

If those guys play any meaningful minutes at all, we are in serious serious trouble.
Not talking about serious time. With the loss of Champagne, we are likely down to three playing guard. Toney and Drumgoole won't be playing any two. The walk ons we have are good enough not to hurt us giving 2 maybe 3 minutes a half. It helps at the margins. I think they can defend, protect the ball and run offense.

My personal impression (granted it is without having seen any of the newcomers play a single ACC level college game) is that the biggest improvement over last season will be in the frontcourt.

IMHO, Brown + Hamilton + Coulibaly + some Toney should prove an upgrade over last seasons Brown + Chukwuka + a lot of Toney. The group should rebound better and be more effective at scoring, IMHO.

I see the wings + guards situation overall as a wash compared to last season with the loss of Champagnie. I pictured Champagnie as added depth that would allow more frequent use of full court pressure making the guards + wings component more effective than last season. With his loss I now see that component of the team more of a wash. FWIW, I do not picture Murphy as more than a 3-point specialist sub in that equation.

In any event, team strengths, especially where very young freshman guys are involved, tend to be dynamic and improve over the course of the season. I expect that to happen with this team especially with Coulibaly and Drumgoole becoming more comfortable and effective as the season progresses. Neither has to be an immediate "difference maker" for this team to be improved over last year, IMO.

I can agree with this. The problem is our margin of error is so thin now that even minor injuries could end up costing us games

I agree with your post. We're losing a player who IMO would have been a help
off the bench. It obviously will affect our depth, but it shouldn't affect wins and
losses all that much. Toney was the one returnee who I thought would most be
affected by Champagnie's presence. Toney now will probably be seeing more
playing time. His outside shot hopefully improves. This is very important IMO
this season because he'll be playing less at the four now that we have three
Bigs. If we have two bigs on the floor at once, Toney will be a 3 (small forward),
and a three has to be able to score from the outside and along the baseline.
If Toney can't do this, then our only other option there is Drumgoole, who I'd
like to see in the backcourt with our other three guards.
I still see us with 5 to maybe 7 ACC wins, and overall 17 total.

Of course the biggest hope right now is that Capel lands a few of these
highly rated recruits he's involved with at the moment.
