I was just wondering why the periods were shortened to 3, 2, and 2 instead of the 3, 3, and 3 minutes.

The time was shortened because there was too little action in the 3 minute periods. No one did anything for the 1st 2 minutes of each period.

I don't mind the shortened periods. I don't like some of the other relatively new rules. But at least they are better than the international rules.

The thing I hate most are the coach's challenges -- not in theory but in practice. Sanderson takes the flag, holds it high over his head and parades to the judges table with a look of total arrogance. He stares them down as if he is daring them not to grant his challenge. It is disgusting to watch. I have not seen any other well-respected coach do anything similar.

Why don't they just call stalling?

They do call stalling, but not all refs call it the same. 3 minute periods were just to long to have any chance of constant action. The change was not just for stalling.
