I wonder where that phrase arose. Very few of the foul shots Pitt has taken were charitable gifts from the refs, most of them were earned.

Would you as a coach try and change a player's shooting form during the season? My guess is that this staff ( as with Dixon's ) says no. As evidence Pitt players have such extremes JWF and Ellison with no arc and Kham and Trey with extra high arc. Of our best shooters: looks to me as if the balls spins off X's hands with a sideways motion of his right wrist and JWF is all wrist and takes no pre shot preparation at all, can't get the foul shot off quick enough.

pretty sure the charity aspect refers to gift of a foul given by the opposition...

I don't think any coach anywhere would try to change someone's shooting form during the season. It's hard enough to do in the off season when guys are this old, let alone doing it when they are in the middle of playing games.
