What do you guys think we need to do tomorrow to bring home a W? I know. Score more points. But how?? Clemson is an old team that can shoot it and they are connected defensively.

I think we need to attack the paint all game with Burton, Nelly and Hinson. I think we need to get out in transition and use the secondary break. We must run them off the three point line. Even Hall. Watch the back cuts. No foul trouble. Get them into foul trouble by driving.

I don't know. What do you guys think?

I don't know. What do you guys think?

1) Gang Rebound. This to me is by far the most important thing in the entire game and Capel needs to ride these guys all game long to do so. You cannot give a team like this 2nd chance points, 3rd chances, 4th chances to launch and bury 3's. The entire team needs to go after rebounds on the defensive side of the basketball and not worry about transition offense. Try to Control the glass all game long. This is most important.

2) Play physical. This goes with point number 1. Outmuscle these guys on the glass, bump the cutters and the shooters trying to get open, and guard the 3 point line like your life depends on it and 7 feet and in and try to force them to beat us from the midranage. They are going to launch a lot of 3s, its coming. They better be contested by our defense and our entire defense better be collapsing to the interior once the shot is up. Clemson is a 31% shooting team from the midrange game for the entire season, they stink in the midrange game. Force them there.

3) Go right at Hunter Tyson and get him in foul trouble and double him up on boxing out if need be. He's the top scorer, the top shooter, the top rebounder, the go to guy, etc.. Hinson needs to go right at him and Hinson needs to control the glass. All of our other players can pick up fouls playing hard and physical, Hinson cannot. We need to double this guy up at times on defense and take him off the boards. I would run doubles at him with length and size. Our offense needs to attack him off the bounce, that includes Hinson, that includes Burton going right at him. Try to get this guy in some foul trouble if the opportunity presents itself. Ben Middlebrooks can be sneaky good off the bench getting offensive rebounds. We better have bodies on him in the paint

4) Control the game tempo and the pace and dont getting into a shooting match against them. Dictate the game pace and communicate on defense. Gang Rebound, which goes back to point 1.

They are 336 in the nation in offensive rebounding and 175 in rebounding margin. We don’t need to worry as much about gang rebounding as we staying close to shooters out to the 3pt line and doing our defensive rotations on the pass.
I know. What the hell is he talking about?

Rebound margin is one of our strengths. Its one of the reasons we have been as successful as we have been.

Pitt is 38th in the country in rebound margin and 24th in the country in rebounds per game and 30th in the country in offensive and defensive combined rebound rate. We outrebounded Syracuse on the road by 9, outrebounded Virginia by 4, and lost to North Carolina's big frontline by 5 in the last 3 games.

This has been a big turnaround in comparison to past Pitt teams under Capel

My #1 key to the game is trying to keep Clemson to 1 and done on the offensive end by controlling the glass and to give our team 2nd chance points on offense by controlling the glass.

I should have included not turning the basketball over too, because the last time we played Clemson and lost by nearly 30 points, they scored a ton of points off turnovers.

I agree. Rebounding just is not something I would have as a top thing to emphasize against Clemson. We should fine in that area. And as you stated we are already good at it this season.

Am I the only person who is skeptical who in stats like this and mention to myself this will be the one game where they allow a bunch of nobodies to get a bunch of hustle rebounds? Or maybe am I just traumatized Pitt basketball fan?

For sure yes to your second question. Maybe is the answer to your first question.

Wouldn’t mind seeing the Spaniard(s) using their height on the 3 pointer defense but they didn’t even play last week. Maybe in critical situations after a timeout. At least I won’t cringe watching Santos trying to make up ground covering the 3’s. Clemson won’t be facing the Hortons and Santos’ of the world when finding their sweet spots. Pitt switched better than I’ve seen against UVA. There’s hope today.
