As I was watching the Super Bowl, I couldn't help but think about what Coach Duzz had to have been thinking as he watched Denver's defense. He had to be thinking that in a couple years, but hopefully sooner, that's how Pitt's defense is going to be playing.

You have a couple of dynamite DEs to rush the passer; you have strong and mobile DTs to clog the middle as well as make plays down the line; you have fast LBs who can play the run or drop into coverage or blitz; and you have fast and physical DBs who will hit you, who will cover, and who will get their hands on the ball. I see the Pitt roster filling up with players who will play these roles.

And I was also thinking how boiling hot Coach Duzz had to have been after the defensive performance against Navy. That was two bowl games in a row where he saw the Pitt defense get beaten badly. So he went out and did something about it. Welcome Damar, Amir, Keyshon, Phil, Therran, Bricen, Zack, Patrick, Henry, Chase, Kaezon, Elias, Rashad and Rashad...

What you have to like about Coach Duzz - he's been on the job for less than 14 months and he's shown that he can identify weak areas and address them. Many examples - from the transfers to the recruits.

A final thought - Pitt is located in a terrific city. This fact sometimes gets lost. I think this staff is selling all that Pitt has to offer and one of the gems that Pitt has to offer is its location in the amazing city of Pittsburgh.

Go Pitt.

PS: I'm off to the Cultural District to see a play...

Honestly I would rather see Pitt get smacked like that by Navy, then the debacle against Houston. If you can't stop someone on a given day, tip your hat and move on. But the Houston loss was the most pathetic, devastating choke job maybe ever seen in football. The game literally was all but over. It was completely inexcusable to blow that game.

-Of course he gets it. He is building the defensive line first and foremost. Once again the juggernaut offense in the NFL, Carolina, couldnt do squat against the #1 defense in the NFL, Denver. Defense always wins. Narduzzi gets it. Only if some of our fans got it that any star player on the defensive line is far more valuable than a star WR, or RB. Defense, Defense, Defense.

Coach Duzz didn;t need to watch the Super Bowl to have his vision of what his defense at Pitt will look like. In fact, it';s kind of apples and oranges since the NFL D is all about pressuring the passer and confusing the offense with complicated, multiple types of zone coverages. Nobody runs the ball anymore in the NFL, it's virtually impossible. Duzzi's philosophy has always been to stop the run first and foremost. His vision has been the same since he arrived at MSU, and his ultimate vision is to have a D that looks a whole lot like the best ones he had at MSU. It will take more than one recruiting class to make that happen, but this class was a very good building block to start with. Stout, run plugging DTs, athletic, aggressive DEs, mobile, physical, smart, downhill LBs, big, rangy CBs that like to get their noses dirty at the LOS and in the run game, a sledgehammer of a SS, and a FS who can cover and tackle like one of those corners.

We are short a few pieces yet. The LB corps is an urgent recruiting priority at this point. We need to add quality and quantity there.

The 2017 and 2018 product should be pretty damned legit.

I am sure he wishes we had the type of athletic LBs Denver has!

If our LBs play well this season the ceiling goes up a lot. Our LBs were exposed against Navy
