Coach preference.

Did you read bwh05's post earlier in this thread?

Who do you think is running this process?
She was the driver in the wrestling hire at OSU. She is not the problem. You act like we weren't cheap for the last 35 years. Give me a break.

Making a good hire will cause wrestling fans to increase donations. I was ready to donate if Pat were hired.

With Pitt's history related to wrestling, no one should donate until Pitt shows that it really cares. I have been there in the past, but not again.

But the school can't bring in a high quality coach if they don't have the available funds to make the hire.

They will not get the funds if they make their usual hire. It is not like Pitt made one bad hire or had a few down years in wrestling. Other schools do it, Pitt has to make the effort.

You need to place a down payment if you want a nice home. Pitt fans want a nice home with no down payment.

Piranha .....

When you put a down payment on a house, you know exactly which house you are getting before you put the money down ....... no one would put a down payment on a house that they have never seen before or know nothing about ....... IMO, Pitt has to decide that they are going to upgrade the program and make a big time hire ..... if they are not willing to do that, why should donors give them a lot of money and trust them to make a great hire when their track record suggests otherwise ( bwh05 said we didn't handle the interviews this week all that well for crying out loud !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) .... if Pitt hired Santoro or Brands or Bono, etc. I would without question make a nice contribution. I already donate a pretty large sum yearly to the PantherClub and have even increased the amount since Narduzzi was hired ...... Pitt stepped up with a football coach I liked and I stepped up even more with donations ..... I'm willing to do more for wrestling with the right hire......

Pitt could hire a big time wrestling coach with excellent assistants for a price that is about the cost of one position coach on the football team (the difference between what they are already paying the present wrestling staff and what a top notch staff would cost).

I'm waiting to see the hire .... and we are told that Pitt isn't handling things all that well so far !

Again, I agree with you.

If the AD is not aware or cannot rely on the $, then what good are these promises.

Flynn would be a very solid hire, bring a winning culture, and immediately upgrade the program. He was one of my top choices. Had a strong group of assistants that hopefully will follow him.

If Flynn does get hired, then it is very possible Lyke chose him over Santoro.

Not sure there. Santoro probably wanted significant upgrades and money for assistants. Lehigh is a very good gig and he has that program close top 10 and is from that area. I'd be happy with Flynn, wish we would have made a play for Cunningham, but not sure he would leave Cael. Flynn has Port, and Moore on his staff, hope they would follow him. If it's Flynn, would be a good hire IMO. Lot of experience. Flynn has the respect of many coaches. The Brands from Iowa think highly of Flynn/ Bumgardner and the Edinboro program to schedule them every year.

Other schools probably get donor donations before hiring a coach too.

Flynn has done more with less. If Flynn went to Pitt, then everyone would have wanted him from the start. Santoro and Flynn are good choices.

I heard it was a done deal but from the sounds of things he wanted a bigger financial commitment to the program than they wanted to give and he walked way.

Will you cut it out with this already? It's the same whining in every thread. How about an original idea?

How many more millions of dollars does Pitt have to spend on athletics than Lehigh?

Even taking into account funding our football program, how many more millions in revenue does Pitt have to spend over Lehigh? And Pitt couldn't find the money for Santoro?

Come on. You want to blame this on fans not donating? I could see if we couldn't out bid Ohio State or LSU for a coach. Then you could blame donors. But not this.

This is another Pitt administration screw up.

Santoro, as a college wrestler, had those two national championships under his belt. That stuff resonates with recruits. Of course, Pat has translated that talent over to the coaching. Flynn, was no slouch as a competitor, All-American at PSU with a pretty impressive record. Both have proven coaching track records. Personally, and I could care less about being a Pitt grad,Santoro would have been my preference. However, I can live with Flynn, who would do a great job at Pitt and field a tough, competitive team. Let's be honest, we are not going to be in the same stratosphere as PSU, as long as Sanderson is there. I do think Pitt can be top 10-15 and field national champs. Flynn should be able to recruit some excellent home grown talent and have us in that range. Hopefully, an upgrade in facilities is in the plans and paying top flight assistants. Flynn would be a solid choice.

LOL! This is based on what? Wishful thinking?
There was a poster on here that is connected at Edinboro that said Pitt made an offer to Flynn that he could not refuse. This was posted before any news came out, and long before Santoro came out in public to say he was staying. That's how dipshit.

So I guess all the news reports and posts on Santoro don't count but the one post regarding Flynn does? Laughable.

I was wondering about that comment too. Interesting timing.

That's exactly what you insinuated.

I think I know what I was insinuating as I wrote the post!

It is my belief that Pitt decided to make a diversity hire for the AD job not to simply hire the most qualified candidate. When you do that and hire an inferior candidate, you can expect screw ups like this. Because diversity was more important than past performance or ability
Yeah, this is stupid.

Go read the other thread on this and see who was right, genius. This is a major league screw up by a not ready for prime time AD.
