Coaching changes

From everything I've heard and read about Campbell, he would probably turn it down. He's a bit of a thorowback. I've heard he doesn't have an agent, lives in a modest house for his salary, and plans on coaching high school football later on in life. I would find it incredibly hard to believe that a lot of schools haven't kicked the tires in Ames a few times to gage his interest. In an age of hired mercenaries, (that's what most of them are in this day and age) I find that refreshing.

not questioning what you've heard. but i believe none of that. i actually question his mental state if he wants to stay in ames, ia.

I don’t he is a college coach. The nfl is all business his morning pray meetings would not go over well.

That's the thing. With the big football factory schools, they can change coaches on whim, and it really has little effect on recruiting. It's not as easy at a school like Pitt. And with Pitt, you pretty much know they aren't going to shell out big money to pay a buyout and a big salary for a new HC & staff on top of that. That narrows the market down to coordinators, retreads, and former NFL coaches who have exhausted their marketability in the league.

Michigan State made it easy for Saban to quit. He did well at LSU but people were impatient with him there, too. Sometimes I think he wins at Bama because they just pump so much money into the program that it's nearly impossible for other schools to match.

The story I heard was Sagan refused to meet with the big money and would only report to the AD and President. If that is true didn’t Paterno have the same kind of arrangement at PSU?

Can’t he be highly ambitious and still coach at ISU?
I guess it depends on your definition of highly ambiguous.

Money, status, and competition are three boxes that Iowa State doesn’t check, that a highly ambitious coach would require. At least to meet my definition.

I'll give you 2 of 3. Competition is the same there as anywhere else in P5 land outside of 3 schools for year in year out NC ambitions and maybe another 4 or 5 schools who can chase that dream every 5 or 6 years.

If that were true, the Big Xll winner would be represented in the playoffs every year.

I don't know the answer to that. Paterno pretty much was the athletic department up there. Remember when they wanted him to step down and he threw them out of his house? But big money always found its way to Paterno, just wasn't direct.

Fair enough maybe he is really happy in Ames. It is a beautiful town.

I had heard a story that he was in some real estate deals. Which is fine by me. I just boosters can really ruin a program.

Don't get me wrong. He's at a very high level in his profession, by being the Iowa State HC. Higher than 99% of his peers will ever reach.

I just think "Highly ambitious" coaches reach for more.

If his goal is put Ames/ISU on the map, turn what wasn't much of a football program into a behemoth, build a team that brings in big money for the school, etc. -- then he is definitely ambitious. And you have to be quite ambitious (perhaps a little delusional?) to believe that you can accomplish those things in a place like Ames.

My statement is true. You have 3 schools who can compete for the NC year in year out. They are Tier 1
1) Alabama
2) Clemson
3) Ohio St

Then a small handful who can make a run every 5 to 6 years This is Tier 2
1) ND
2) LSU
3) Auburn
4) Georgia
5) Oklahoma
6) Texas A&M
7) Florida

Then a few more schools who may one day work themselves back to Tier 2 so they are Tier 3 but right now nothing about them is any better then The rest of P5
1) USC
2) Texas
3) Michigan

That is it. 10 schools with 3 more who may move itself back to Tier 2. So your statement that the B12 winner would be a representative in the playoffs every year is false as long as it is a 4 team format for playoffs.

I know I am going to get ripped a new one but I would put PSU in that second tier. Two schools who are on the outside looking in which could rapidly enter the second tier are Miami and FSU.

I was going to add Miami and FSU to tier 3 but it just seems that every time they take a step forward they take 3 steps back. Yes I guess PSU could be tier 2 but I guess my hatred for them kind of blinded me.

Fair enough. We'll agree to disagree, then. I think we're measuring two different things related to this discussion.

Oh, he was. There is a big retirement community up on a hillside right off of I-99 and not far from the stadium that Paterno was involved in. They used his name to attract big money. Really nice place. That sort of stuff doesn't bug me other than it's a little wonky for a state employee.

Boosters are a blessing and a curse. If Pitt had a big money guy like Oregon or Oklahoma State, you'd enjoy the spoils but you also know they're calling the shots. You also have to be careful you don't get a clown like Miami had who gives players gifts or favors.

Back to Paterno, I know a very wealth family that are ardent supporters of the football program that have given generously. The only caveat was that JoePa had to trek over once a year for dinner to pick up the check. A grandson got a PWO out of it but that's really it. They really just wanted Joe to show up for dinner and take a couple pics. They made it worth his while.

Miami and FSU are hard to predict. Miami especially. PSU is really the only northeastern team that has facilities to compete with the top tier. My next statement is really going to get me in trouble, I would love to see Pitt build a multi class building at the Schenely ice rink and wrap those building around a 40,000 seat football stadium.

Ha ha. I think we'd all love something along those lines but I think you have a better chance of going skating in July.

Oklahoma State and Oregon as you point out have one BIG money man. Which probably isn’t that disruptive.

Agree with you that Miami & FSU could work there way in there. I think Oregon is could work there way in there too.

One can dream. The really sad thing about the city government is they don’t appreciate the greatest of the University of Pittsburgh. Take other cities like Cleveland, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Kansas City. None of those cities have anything close to Pitt

No but I also don't think the University is interested in doing anything like building a stadium. I also think there is a lot of toe-tapping that goes on over UPMC and their tax status. I know Pitt is not UPMC but we all know there is mutual benefit and a boatload of money.

The city of Baltimore destroyed their downtown because of tax policies. I really don’t want Pittsburgh to turn into another Baltimore

I'm going to be honest and maybe in the minority. I don't think PSU has tier 1 facilities. The indoor facility is not that nice. The weight room is meh... The locker room and meeting rooms are solid. They don't compare to virtually every SEC school I've been to. If we're just talking those facilities, PITT is every bit as good if not better. In the B10, I've been to Michigan/MSU/OSU. They all trump PSU's facilities. PSU's facilities give me a PSAC on steroids feel.

You would know better than me. I was just going by from what I hear. I never been to the campus.

I don't think Pittsburgh is in danger of doing anything differently. I haven't been to Baltimore in a while so I'm not sure what you mean. The were gentrifying the heck out of Fell's Point the last time I was down there.

Downtown Baltimore is a war zone.

I lived in East Baltimore for a few years. Most of my family originates from that area - Loch Raven Blvd. I worked in West Baltimore about 12-13 years ago.

One of the authentic things about the show "The Wire" was its authenticity. I've seen some incredibly crazy things down there. The show wasn't too far off. The worst thing I saw down there was at a community yard sale on South Carey and West Pratt. A handicap woman wasn't looking both ways when she crossed the street and was hit and killed by a truck. The reaction of the town folk was what caused such an ill feeling. People just walked over and looked and walked away as if it were no big deal. Kids riding street bikes was another thing.. I saw young teenager with his little brother crash into a parked car and get seriously hurt, broken skull. I saw an elderly woman who was robbed and raped and nearly beaten to death. She needed so much facial reconstruction that shouldn't couldn't get dentures anymore. When folks say it's a war zone, let's put it this way. My father served in Vietnam and 3 of my old brothers served in Gulf tours... They all said they felt safer over there than they did in Baltimore.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side. After reading a little more about Matt Campbell, I tend to think most of that is true. After a little digging, the agent part is true. Apparently he's turned down a few opportunities along his career path that most other coaches would probably bite at. Check out his Wiki page.
