Let’s look at the Syracuse fast start and critique Capel’s game plan: Syracuse is a poor three point shooting club on the season, Starling has been scoring 25 a game lately and Lampkin single handedly hurt Pitt in the last game. Pitt gave up the three in part to take away Lampkin and Starling (who made a couple tough shots). For the game Starling had 14 points on 15 shots, I think. Lampkin was hampered by fouls, coaching had nothing to do with that. On offense when Pitt was not trying to force passes, the shots they got were good ones.
GDG is slow to close out on shooters, Lowe is not physically strong and Corhen is not a good defender, understanding those limitations Capel could have gone to a zone, but chose to stay the course. Corhen’s fouls forced Zach to the four and Cummings to the small forward (maybe Bell liked that matchup). In any case the press got Pitt back into the game along with shooting averages coming back to normal levels for both teams. Maybe a coach making small tweaks and maintaining patience wins the game now and then.
The staff knows basketball better than we do, and it is fun to second guess coaching, but even knowing the finances of Pitt sports wishing for a savior to come and rescue Pitt sports with a $50 Million donation (because realistically that is what it would take) is a waste of time. I can’t imagine Pitt getting new coaches in football or basketball.
