Let’s look at the Syracuse fast start and critique Capel’s game plan: Syracuse is a poor three point shooting club on the season, Starling has been scoring 25 a game lately and Lampkin single handedly hurt Pitt in the last game. Pitt gave up the three in part to take away Lampkin and Starling (who made a couple tough shots). For the game Starling had 14 points on 15 shots, I think. Lampkin was hampered by fouls, coaching had nothing to do with that. On offense when Pitt was not trying to force passes, the shots they got were good ones.

GDG is slow to close out on shooters, Lowe is not physically strong and Corhen is not a good defender, understanding those limitations Capel could have gone to a zone, but chose to stay the course. Corhen’s fouls forced Zach to the four and Cummings to the small forward (maybe Bell liked that matchup). In any case the press got Pitt back into the game along with shooting averages coming back to normal levels for both teams. Maybe a coach making small tweaks and maintaining patience wins the game now and then.

The staff knows basketball better than we do, and it is fun to second guess coaching, but even knowing the finances of Pitt sports wishing for a savior to come and rescue Pitt sports with a $50 Million donation (because realistically that is what it would take) is a waste of time. I can’t imagine Pitt getting new coaches in football or basketball.

Corhen was just another miss at the 5. He is just such a soft player coupled with a low basketball IQ. At this point in the season, he is clearly our biggest issue.

I didn't like doubling Lampkin at all. There are probably only 1 or 2 bigs in the nation that I'd double simply because if you are a big and STILL in college basketball, it probably means you can't score very well so I'll live with you shooting contested 6 foot 2's rather than give up wide open 3s when he passes out. So, I HOPE the plan was to turn Lampkin over, which they did a few times because if you don't turn him over, you are going to give up a wide open 3. I hope the plan wasn't "we cant let Lampkin go for 25 against us" because he isnt close to being capable of doing that.

I have said too many times on this board that I dont think this team or really any college team should be helping off a 3 point shooter to stop a potentially easy 2 point shot. We are 16th in the ACC in defending the 3 and its because our rotations are too slow. So why help at all? We play a very good 3 point shooting team on Saturday. Burton can get into the lane. OK, fine. Make him finish in the lane. He isnt always going to make the contested 8 footers. But when you help, it's pass, pass, pass, wide open 3.

Turnovers seemed to flip drastically from first half to second half last night … so did scoring

Definitely a take of two halves

The approach against ND should be what you suggest. We have gone to south bend way too many times and been lit up by the 3 ball. We should be running them off the 3point line and let them go to the hole. Our bigs and Zack were pretty active last night blocking shots, so maybe we can gets some blocks when they get by us. I dont think I can take watching ND rain open 3s on us, it will be tough to take.

I dont want to see one person playing help defense. If you can't keep the guy in front of you from getting into the lane, then see if he can make a 2. If ND goes 6-14 on 3s but beats us on 2s, I will tip my hat to them.

No help. Make them shoot 2's! The amount of open 3s we give up is maddening. We can't keep helping off shooters. I dont understand it.

Agree and I would also play Cummings at the point and GDG at the 5 with Ish, Austin and Lowe and AD and Cam and Jorge subbing in. It’s clear that Cam and Dunn were big misses in that they didn’t fit into the chemistry of this team. If you look at the Wake tourney win last year Bub, Lowe, Ish and Blake all played over 30 minutes with Zack filling in while GDG and Fed splitting the time at the 5.

In retrospect, they might have had a better season with Cummings at the point joining Lowe, Ish, Zack and GDG at the 5 with AD, Jorge and Papa playing more. They might have had a slower start but would be better now.

Cam isn’t a 5 and forced GDG to play 4 which he isn’t a good fit and with both of them together, it clogged up the floor and offensive flow and ended up with more 1:1 guard play. Sometimes more isn’t better as we have seen with football portal and the chemistry wasn’t good with this lineup.

My guess is that Corhen was targeted as a transfer based on how well he played against us the previous year. But in hindsight, every team looked strong against us last year with our soft bigs. Whenever the next truly effective 5 comes into our lineup it will be the first (under Capel)

He was. But, he is pretty skilled offensively for a college big guy. I, too, liked his offense. Offensively, he's been fine. The rebounding numbers concerned me and Capel said they were low due to their switching.

I would think Corhen should be featured on offense against ND also I would try and take Burton inside and post him up. Getting fouls on Burton is important. ND often gets favorable referees at home maybe not so much as with Brey. I wonder how ND team and fans respond to the rant by the coach in the presser after the Louisville loss.

He's high school boys with Lowe.
