Cuse Stadium Renovation

And to think... Carrier Corp makes air conditioners......

Dear Panteras - I'm way overdue in apologizing for what I assumed was a deliberate "fake news" post on Amazon's HQ2 decision and Pgh. So there it is.

As to the Carrier Dome - $118M is a LOT of jack to put into a facility that I regard as highly sub-optimal for BOTH football and hoops... but especially basketball.

I've not looked at the story yet, but one has to wonder if there are planned, fundamental changes in the layout of the football and hoops configurations? If not, I don't think Syracuse has to have an indoor football stadium when no more than 1-3 games are played in a typical season when weather (winter is brutal in upstate NY) can be snowy bad. Otherwise, Autumn weather north of the Finger Lakes is lovely.

As such, wouldn't that $118 very large be better put to use in building a new hoops facility??

"Among the renovations to be done on the stadium will be a brand new roof, which an artist’s rendering shows off with a clear top to allow for natural sunlight to shine down on the football field. A brand new video scoreboard would be added as well, looming above the field from the ceiling. Lighting upgrades, improved accessibility, and enhanced Wi-Fi are also part of the plans for the aged venue. Also being added to improve the fan experience? A new air conditioning system, new restrooms, and new concession stands."

Looks like they are going cheaper than originally intended. I remember an earlier rendering with more substantial changes. Specifically, on the new rendering, it doesn't look like they are touching the seating bowl which is in need of renovations, too, unless they've done that previously. Also, the center hung scoreboard looks small.

I'm also guessing the hung scoreboard and clear roof mean this will be a fixed roof?

One day I would like to see an article that says Pitt will spend spend $1 million dollars on "Right Sizing" Heinz Field down to 56,000 capacity (Old Pitt Stadium) with tarps and other removeable modifications for home Pitt Football Games.

Small amount of investment for major impact on game day experience.

Lets get it done for 2019 Heather.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

The Carrier Dome is a dump. Even after pouring $118 million into it, it will still likely be below average. It has an incredibly ugly exterior and the interior is cold and sterile (aesthetically). It was also uncomfortably warm when I was there but the AC should improve that aspect of the fan experience.

Syracuse is blowing its once-in-a lifetime opportunity to build something new and special for its bell cow programs and its fans and that’s legitimately a crying shame.

You are right on the money about the exterior. It looks like a set piece from police barracks in "Escape from New York."

Syracuse putting a lot of money into that place that still won't be able to hold a candle to Pitt's football and basketball facilities.

The only right sizing of Heinz Field is Pitt leaving there..... ASAP!

To clarify, I meant fixed roof as in doing away with the air pressure and airlocks, though it was a cool quirk.

Yeah, I’ve looked into this since last night and it will definitely be a fixed roof with a clear center over the playing field - like the Vikings have in their new domed stadium.

Syracuse will also have a mobile jumbotron on tracks that will change locations depending on the sport. That’s certainly an interesting decision.

They are doing it in two different phases as they’re trying to do it without interrupting football, basketball or lacrosse seasons.

The first phase, which will be completed in 2020, will involve the new roof, LED lighting and the new mobile scoreboard.

The second phase will be done by 2022 and will involve the installation of the widening of concourses, affixing it to another building as a way of widening it, as the air conditioning. They are also talking about building a hotel right next to it, but that has not been completely decided yet.

This is a separate project but some are saying that it could serve as the main entrance. At the very least, the two buildings will definitely be attached.

Apparently, a lot of people think these are just the first two announced phases and that there will be another round of changes like improving the lower seating bowl, adding some individual chair back seating, reducing capacity and improving their luxury suites. However, the speculation is they don’t have that money raised yet, so they have not yet announced that aspect of the renovation.

At first, I was skeptical about those claims, but if you look at it closely you realize that those changes would definitely come last – behind putting on a new roof, widening the concourse, adding AC, etc.

Some are speculating that the final cost will be closer to $200 million but they don’t want to announce that all in one chunk. Honestly, that’s not the craziest theory I’ve ever heard.

This is what it currently looks like and yes, it is absolutely this ugly in person. In fact, it’s probably uglier at ground level. If anything, this is a somewhat flattering picture of the dome.

They need to make it look less like a nuclear reactor and more like a welcoming athletics venue. I think they need to put brick and glass all around the exterior - to match the rest of that beautiful little campus - but that would be a fairly expensive superficial change.

This is what it actually looks like at ground level as you are heading into the stadium...

...and this is what it looks like on the inside. It’s not a terribly impressive facility up close. It is certainly loud, and the people are pretty nice. Also, in football, it’s relatively intimate feeling. You don’t feel far from the action at all.

However, overall, it’s a pretty underwhelming venue, IMHO. It definitely did not live up to the hype.

They should probably hang some giant banners on the outside. That seems like a cheap solution that would go a long way.

Yeah, they have that planned as well and it will make it look a little better.

However, they need a permanent solution. If they’re going to spend upwards of $200 million improving the fans’ in-game experience, throwing a couple million dollars towards the outside facade wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.

I’m just excited to go up there and experience it for myself after the renovations have been completed. I was underwhelmed in my previous trips to Central New York. However, the campus itself is beautiful and the people are nice. The town around it is a lot like South Bend with Notre Dame – gorgeous campus, terrible town around it.

I’m looking forward to a more modernized venue with basic amenities like air conditioning.

When I was up there in 2012 all I remember is concrete concrete and Toni Sunseri underwhelmingly lead Pitt to a loss to a bad Syracuse team.
