Was considered to be the front-runner at Iowa, his home state but is no longer a candidate. It's believed that is due to being the #1 candidate for the Indiana job.

Either way, WVU is going to get a great coach. There is an inordinate amount of "guarantee" coaches out there.

Ben McCollum
Will Wade
Ryan Odom
Jerrod Calhoun (this is probably WVU's pick)
Chris Mack
Niko Medved

It's a great year to be needing to hire a coach.

Not sure any of those guys are guarantees. Good candidates, but not guarantees.

Enfield and DeVries are good coaches. They came up short in year one.

I wouldn't have called Enfield and Devries guarantees last year. I didn't know enough about Devries. Enfield is on the next level with Brad Brownell and those guys. The one guy on my list who isn't a guaranteed NCAAT every year guy is Calhoun because he's still too new so I can't be sure.

Ryan Odom missed out on the NCAAT in his first year at both Utah State and VCU. Both were NCAA tourney teams the year before he arrived.

It seems like the Odom to UVA marriage was destined to happen the day Bennett retired. Still not sure how I feel about this one.

Looks like it's happening. I predict WVU lands Calhoun and they are in the NCAAT next year with all new players while we go 14-17. Calhoun has won at 3 levels.

It is official. Devries had the Hoopies decline an NCAA bid so he could get started at his new job two or three days sooner.

When Devries got the WVU job, I said that they'd make the NCAA Tournament because they got an elite player for free in Tucker Devries. The boosters didn't have to pay him. WVU could pay him directly by giving his dad $500K or whatever as some bonus for winning 2 games or something like that and telling him that's Tuckers's NIL salary. I figured WVU would go big in the portal like they did the year before by getting Jesse Edwards to leave Syracuse and then Kerr Kriisa and Raequon Battle. Then they had Touissant and some other leave. That was supposed to be a NC contending team. The boosters agreed to continue to pay big for Edwards, Kriisa, and Battle but the way the season played out, I believe they told Devries they can only pay for 1 guy. So they got Small and nobody else. My guess is Devries was pissed about that but he coached his ass off with a bunch of YMCA guys but got them to play great defense and they won like UVa 55-53. So given his NIL limitations, it's no surprise he went to Indiana.

WVU will be fine though. They'll hire Huggy disciple Jerrod Calhoun and they'll make the NCAAT next year. I'd imagine Huggy will join the staff as an assistant coach.

Huggy in the Shooter Flatch role? Interesting.

He still lives in Morgantown, goes to all the games. I even saw him at the TBT in Wheeling. The guy loves WVU. He said he wants to get back into coaching. I'm sure he means as a HC but if his protege gets the job and asks him to be an assistant, I can't imagine he'd turn it down. The question would be if WVU would sign off on it.

And is there any better gig out there than the drunk assistant coach? Huggy was made for this.
