** I was really disappointed today with the eye contact made by Jamie in the post-game interview. But everything else was great!

** Well, not everything. For the first 10 minutes, I was more than a little but worried. Kept mumbling “c’mon guys …” After that, the Panthers were a steamroller like we haven’t seen since … well, like maybe we haven’t seen.

** I’ve always been one to subscribe to the notion that things are never quite as good nor as bad as fans seem to think they are. So accordingly, I’m curbing my enthusiasm just a touch as I’m not certain how good Davidson really is. After all, UNC torched them by 33.

** Still, this win certainly looked impressive, didn’t it?

** I think we can say this much for sure. This is the kind of win that will make a whole bunch of new people stand up and take notice of our Panthers.

** Ken Pomeroy’s numbers agree. This game vaulted us up to #23 overall on his rankings.

** At the minimum, more people better stand up and take notice of Mike Young.

** Mike isn't just one of the top 100 players in the country. He's in the Top 40 with a bullet.

** While I like Len Elmore as an announcer, it was too bad that Bill Raftery wasn’t on hand to exclaim “SEND IT IN!” on Mike’s first monster slam. That one deserves to be in the vault with the handful to top slams by Panthers over the years.

** Mike was a monster most of this afternoon, with the exception of the one trip late when he decided that instead of a monster, he’d rather be in out of control point guard. We’ll forgive him.

** After all, Mike demonstrated so many of the other incredible things he can do offensively besides lead the break. He’s got just so many post moves that when he gets them going, he’s tough to stop for sure.

** I suppose any team is tough to stop when they are making shots, and the Panthers were certainly doing that today. But the good news is this didn’t appear at all to be any kind of hot shooting day. This appeared to be a Dixon offense running at peak efficiency. We weren’t making tough shots. We were getting layups along with open jumper after open jumper.

** Our two guard had 24 points and shot 5-8 from three.

** And our point guard was once again very good giving more evidence that the next level he’s playing at this year is real and sustainable.

** Despite all of the offensive excitement offered by the Panthers today, perhaps it should have been our defense that gets the most attention. OK, what I should say is our defense after we got our act together.

** Davidson started the game shooting 8-12 from the floor in the first minutes or so. They shot 16-56 afterward. That’s 28.5% That’s impressive.

** Again, Pomeroy agrees, as this game moved our Panthers up to #74 in defensive efficiency. Still not where it needs to be, but moving in the right direction.

** And they also kept Jack Gibbs at bay. I really believed he would give us much more trouble today than he did.

** That about sums this game up as a whole. I think everyone believed that Davidson would give us much more trouble than they did.

** I’m still not totally convinced this team is really good team. But they are pushing the needle in that direction.

** Perhaps when Dixon looks me in the eye and tells me that his team is really good, I’ll believe it for sure.

If we play, shoot and ~defend like that every game (I know we won't) - who do we lose to?

This wasn't Central Arkansas either...or was it - not a dream right?

My God, what an improvement over last year.

I'd love to play Purdue again...no scratch that - bring on the Warriors!!!

Sry - I'm giddy at the moment:D

Our big run that turned the game and created a blowout was classic. Offense fueled by defense. Perfect combination. And you can safely say we have Leonard Elmore on board.

Why was Elmore thinking Artis was still in the game the whole 1st half when he was on the bench early with 2 fouls? His broadcast partner never even bothered to correct him. I like Elmore but it was strange to see him off like that.

This was an impressive win no matter how you slice it, even if Davidson isn't as good as we thought. Stating the obvious but unless the opposition neutralizes or negates Mike Young odds are we are going to score in droves. His play just opens things up for everyone else. And JRob deserves credit for taking a nice small leap forward in his senior year. He's playing really well right now.

What I like so far that looks different this year is the length at the top of the defense. The guys also look to be closing out more aggressively on 3 pt. shooters. But that length and aggressiveness at the top seems to be making shooters have to try get it off from a bit deeper or a little quicker or with maybe a bit of a different trajectory than they might be comfortable with.

Still a long way to go. The competition will clearly ramp up when ACC play starts. So nothing really matters until they show they can do it then. But the possibilities seem to exist that Pitt can have a chance to be a better defensive team and to be more difficult for opponents to be able to shoot as good of a FG %age consistently as they did the last couple of years. We'll see.

Artis is continuing to baffle me with his attitude at times...others seeing that?

Attitude? No. Frustration today over some very questionable foul calls against him? Yes.

While I can't say I necessarily blame him for some of the frustration with that today, he has to tone it down. Because it will get him nowhere. Either with the officials or with his HC.

Once again, I liked the d. I didn't really think it was that bad initially. There were a few possessions where the d broke down. Davidson also had a few shots go down where the d was great. Just a good offensive team in rhythm. Fortunately, Pitt continued to ratchet up its man to man and was able to get Davidson out of its rhythm. I watched a lot of the d on Gibbs and thought it was pretty good. Rebounding was real Good. Even Ododa looked more comfortable.
When the offense flows this team is real fun to watch. Pretty good in transition and they don't seem to be afraid to make mistakes. Obviously a very fun game to watch.

No, I see a guy who has to make lots of adjustments. He has to guard faster smaller guys and with the new rules that is a big change on D from last year, and on O he hasn't found his role. Last year the O was him and Young. This year Young has become dominant and Robinson has become a shooter and there are 3 point shooter options like Smith and Robinson and hopefully Cam when he gets his rhythm going that makes it harder for Artis to find his niche on the floor.

All is well with Jamel Artis--the perception here that he is struggling is a clear case of the most prevalent Pitt fan sickness known as immediacy bias. The focus is almost solely on the most recent game played (Davidson) because he only scored 6 points and only played 16 minutes due to foul trouble caused by the new officiating emphasis and bad luck to be called for a non-foul or two.

Here is the correct perspective--his season stats (including the Davidson game)--

Jamel is averaging 14.2 pts/game (2nd only to Mike Young's 17.9) while shooting 54.7% from the floor and 42.9% on 3-balls and 81.3% on FTs?
He is also averaging 3.9 rbs/game and 2.7 assists/per game.

That can hardly be considered as "struggling." Every player has up and down games for various reasons.

The good news is that this team has enough talent and firepower that they can win convincingly even when their 2nd best offensive player has an off game.
