Who will have the better won loss record after their first 4 years as head coach. We will get to see Davis this coming season. Scheyer will get his chance the following season. I think Davis will do a very solid job for Tar Heels. Not sure about Scheyer. I can’t help but think that when the game is on the line at Cameron, nobody is going to look down at the bench and say “ we got scheyer so it’s going to end well”.

He has some big ass shoes to fill

Davis

2 horrific choices considering those 2 schools could have literally selected any coach in America, NBA or college.
I think there is some truth to the conspiracy theory that both guys left and didn't want some big name carpet-bagger coming in and diluting their legacies. Even Williams was always very deferential to Dean Smith.

I think the Roy Williams coaching tree has been a bit more successful, so I'd bet on Davis.

I actually expect that if Syracuse goes with Gerry McNamara, he will end up the most successful of the three.

Could see that happening and then Brad Stevens and Jerry Stackhouse (if he's able to do anything at Vandy) coming in afterwards.
I don’t think Brad Stevens will ever coach again and if he does it will be in the NBA. He hates recruiting.

Jerry Stackhouse is possibly the worst P5 basketball coach in NCAA history and abuses “his haters” in DMs. There’s a better chance of a member of this board becoming the next UNC coach.

Bobby Hurley and Wes Miller. And both would be fantastic.

Scheyer is 33 so that’s about the same age that K was when he took over at Duke. The difference is K spent a few years as the head coach at Army. Scheyer has never been a head coach anywhere. Even Pitino’s son did a year at a small college in Florida

Scheyer is going to have more pressure on him than Mt Saint Helens pre 1980

Since WWI, only one UNC coach has had a overall winning percentage lower than .600. That was Matt Doherty, and he was still above .500, but his temperament was his undoing. I'm not sure that that will be a problem for Davis. At Duke, only one coach since 1928 has had an overall losing record. That was Neill McGeachy who was coach for one season (1973-74) between Bucky Waters and Bill Foster. During that same span, I believe Bucky Waters was the only other coach whose overall record was under .600. Vic Bubas took Duke to multiple Final Fours in the 60s (in an era when a school had to win the ACCT to get a bid to the NCAAT). Bill Foster had Duke in the title game against Kentucky in 1978. He also left Krzyzewski with more than a little talent when he departed including Gene Banks, Kenny Dennard, and Vince Taylor. (Krzyzewski has been very successful, and, because he's been there so long, people tend to forget that Duke was a formidable program before he arrived.) If either Davis or Scheyer isn't successful, then they will be the exceptions. These programs are built to win.

How did things go at Duke when Coach K got sick and had to turn the reigns over to his assistant?

We already know anyone with a pulse can win 18-20 games a year at UNC or Duke, but that isn’t good enough.

At the time, there were those who thought that Krzyzewski knew that the '95 team was going to struggle, and that that provided the genesis of his back ailment. An imagined converstaion after the home loss to Clemson might have been, "Gee, this team isn't going to be very good!" Then, "Oh, my back! My back! I've hurt my back! I'm going to need to take some time off to rest it!" What a lucky break for Pete Gaudet!

Pressure will be huge. But I don’t think any of us knows what this man is capable of. I would imagine no one on this site has ever even met him.
