** For those who aren’t fans of Panther Lair Message Board negativity, this one was just about everything the doctor ordered. (This begging the question … who is this “Doctor,” anyway?)

** The cynics and the critics wondered if Duquesne could beat us. But with no fewer than eight minutes gone in the game, that query had almost already been settled. I think even pittizit agreed.

** Once again, this James Robinson fellow gave better evidence that he might be much more of a player than his legions of detractors have suggested.

** And along with James, the Panthers offered several guards who should indeed be starting for the Panthers instead this Micah Mason fellow. Maybe even UP #1 would agree.

** Truth be told, this was a Panther victory that really left little to complain about. Or perhaps I should say, little that should be complained about.

** Perhaps there will be a few who will think of something. Otherwise, I see a dull night on the Message Board!

** Nonetheless, I'll confess that I didn’t see this coming. I saw a Panther victory, but I would have suggested that the score would have dipped into single digits at times in the second half.

** In the Internet world, a good friend of mine regularly participates in sending his “3 stars” every Pitt Hoops game to the Twitter of Post Gazette’s Dejan Kovacevic. This only challenge we faced for the night was trying to discourage him from attempting to be overly objective and including a Duquesne player in his list.

** Once that work was done, we all agreed that the aforementioned James Robinson was the game’s #1 star. He dominated this game early and often. James is doing everything well at the moment. His most important quality however, has been his leadership. I’m sure even Pitt Poker would agree.

** As the game went on, it became clearer and clearer that the #2 start was Sterling Smith. We can only hope that this is closer to the Sterling Smith we will see in more games going forward. Sterling never looked bad in any early games. But he did look like he wasn’t certain about when to assert himself, which was even the case against Purdue. This didn’t look to be the case tonight, and having him seize the 2 guard spot would be a good sign for the Panthers.

** This year, Sterling is 11-18 from three. Even Micah Mason would be proud of those numbers.

** My friend was ready to proclaim Mike Young at his #3 star, and few would have had a problem with this choice. But instead, we all tried to talk him into naming Rafael Maia.

** It was unquestionable that Rafael was a huge difference maker, especially early in the game when the Panthers jumped all over the Dukes.

** It was good to know that he earned the starting nod with his play in practice, but he backed it up in the game, too. Better than any of our other centers, Rafael uses his legs and body to defend. He still needs to do a better job squeezing rebounds, but he was looking good getting his hands on rebounds, and this matters.

** More than anything else, Rafeal seems to compliment Mike the best as well. When Mike is holding the ball, Rafeal seems to know where to go.

** I’ll skip by Mike, accept to say I can’t wait to see how he stacks up in the ACC season. I’ve seen just about all of the best bigs in our conference, and so far it doesn’t look like he takes a back seat to any of them.

** I’m not sure what I’m thinking about Jamel’s game at the moment. Hitting shots is what made him the higher end player he was last year, but I’d like him to be more effective with dribble penetration.

** Sheldon Jeter seems to be the Panther’s version of Pedro Alverez. He can help at times on offense, but not so much on the other end.

** Actually, this same description could befall most of our Panther, not just tonight, but this year, as our inability to defend continues to show.

** I do believe it’s great we can score, and that’s going to win us a number of games. But the defense isn’t really progressing.

** Following this game, we are again at #15 according to Pomeroy on offense, but now #99 on defense (#37 overall). These are the kinds of numbers that can get your team into the NCAA Tournament. But they aren’t enough yet to make even the most positive outlook fans feeling good about winning multiple games there.

** And I'm no Doctor, but I know if there's one guy who can beat anything, it's Mr. Conner. Stay strong James! We are all with you!

It was interesting that neither Ododa nor Milligan played at all. I think Jamie said something about Milligan and a redshirt after the game, but I wasn't sure if Ododa was also hurt, it was just weird that he didn't play at all.

One other thing I've noticed, Chris Jones needs to drive the ball more and shoot less. He's kind of a bulky guard, and he can get to the rim. His dunk today was probably the play of the game, but I'd like him to penetrate more and shoot step back jumpers less.

With Jamel, I think he's pressing. Way too loose with the ball. He's shooting everything off curls, nothing is in rhythm. His game right now looks very little like the stretch he had last year where he was dominant. Those games, he let the game come to him. Mid range jumpers, getting to the line.

The worst part about Sterling Smith is knowing we only have him for one year. The kid is a really, really solid player.

I'd like to have Milligan around for two more years.

His defense for the most part is embarrassing. flat out, he's the worst defensive player on this team. Probably even worse than Luther. When he comes into the game, the guy he is guarding will instantly get open shots. It happened again today, in both halves.

He's a very streaky player. He did some really good things today, he just gets lost on defense so often at this point it's beyond frustrating.

Didn't have an opportunity to watch the game, but from the sounds of it, we did pretty good for a bunch of guys who are "too slow".

-This team will be interesting to follow. Unlike the 2009 and 2011 teams where we returned virtually all of our important pieces to field great teams right from the tip, this team is counting on new additions to vault us into a great team. Smith, Wilson, Maia, etc.., these are important pieces to this new team and they are new Pitt players. We are still meshing together with new starters and players. The masterpiece isn't built yet or anywhere close to being built yet with this new team, so to speak.

-If you want to use Kenpom rankings, in 2009 and 2011 we were ranked 2nd and 4th in the country on offense. And as good as those teams were, even they had bad offensive performances earlier in the season. The 2011 team had a miserable early season game on offense against Tennessee, and the 2009 team had a miserable game on offense earlier in the season against Louisville. The offense sucked in both of those games, but it did not judge our season on 1 game. I think our offense this year is quite possibly better than either of those teams that earned 1 seeds, and that is a bold statement after the Purdue game. But like I said, it wasnt Purdue's steller defense, we simply couldnt make wide open shots we generally make. That and our rotation still wasn't set.

-We got a big answer tonight finding a missing piece, and that is Sterling Smith. Perhaps Maia is the second answer at center, but Im not sure yet. I am 100% sure on Smith for the rest of the season. Big upgrade over Jones.

-I still wouldn't worry about what Kenpom says, for now. We are getting our rotation and team put into place for the rest of the season. If this team is as good as I think, we should run the table up to the Louisville game. That puts us at 14-1 going into Louisville. After Louisville we should win our next 5 straight. If Pitt starts the season 18-2 and 8-1 in the ACC, everyone here will be very happy. And I honestly think we can do it.

What an enjoyable game to watch, especially the 1st half. It's fun to have a shooting guard who can shoot! And he rebounds too-added bonus. If there may be a negative from the game, I would have to say that we aren't as deep as maybe originally thought, as there appears to be a big drop off in play when a sub enters the game. Also agree that Artis needs to step it up a big-maybe he could continue to follow Sam Young's path and incorporate a pump fake into his offensive game.

Chaos....he actually sort of threw one of those fakes last night, the Duke guarding him fell for it & fouled Jamel. As good as he is at the FT line, it'd put a few more points up for us. Sam's was so good that he got away with it for 3 years....no one could resist the temptation. Jamel's a better 3-point shooter than Sam, too. I think he'll start to come around.

Robinson finally looks like that cant miss we thought we got 3 yrs.ago

I always thought James Robinson was a good player. But.....he always seemed willing to take a back seat to everyone around him. He needs to be more than just a distributor, but an initiator, someone who is creating his shot instead of someone else's. I think he is starting to do this.

Here is a crazy thought-with his height, handle, and IF he continues to shoot well, can Robinson play himself onto a NBA roster? Speed may be an issue. (He cannot miss this year and last year he couldn't make)

- My 3 players of the game were James Robinson, Michael Young, and Sterling Smith with honorable mention to Maia.

- I actually thought our defense was pretty good in the 1st half especially Robinson on Mason and overall was very acceptable ...... not so good in the 2nd half.

- Ododa not playing at all was somewhat strange considering walk-ons played over him ...... I wonder if he was sick/hurt/discipline or Jamie was just sending a strong message.

- Maia is really coming on ...... does a lot of things pretty well ..... moves well without the ball to get in position to receive passes and score around the basketball ..... not a leaper but gets in position to rebound ...... good position on defense and I thought he hedged well...... and maybe best of all, he had some nice passes...... looks like he has a lot of chemistry with Young ..... and finally, it looks like he has been well coached in the past.

- BEST OF LUCK TO JAMES CONNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to acknowledge some agreement with your thoughts and my appreciate your optimism.

However, I do think you meant a miserable game on DEFENSE against Tennessee i Dec 2010 when we let them score 83 points (a season worst) and shoot 56% (also a season worst).

It's an interesting question as to whether we are a better offensive team than 2009 or 2011. 2009 had holes offensively (not high end 3pt shooting for one), but got offensive rebounds at such an extremely high level that it made us an elite offense. And of course, we had Sam.

2011 was a very, very efficient offensive team. But they perhaps were not quite as skilled as this group.

Most definitely. The NBA usually has a spot for a game managing backup PG. Hell, the Sixers are currently cornering the market on game managing PGs with questionable shooting (McConnell, Pressey, Marshall) in the hopes of flipping one of them if they prove to be viable NBA PGs. Marshall has been so up and down over his career.

If he has a solid year, he'll get looks. He's been on radars since his freshman season. If he has a big year he can be a late 2nd rounder.

I feel like it's just tough to gauge anything right now with these freedom of movement rules. Offense in general looks much better across college basketball.

I think Pitt could both look better than they ever have on offense, while not being quite as good relative to the rest of college basketball as they have been in the past.

James Robinson, he just looks really good. he was playing really well against Gonzaga, sliding on his face. He was very good against Purdue and tonight. His shot looks so much better. beautiful backspin, control. also, 8 assists, 0 turnovers.

as for James Conner, my prayers are with you ! you are an inspiration to all of us ! God Bless James Conner !
Nail, meet hammer. You nailed it: the form on his jumper this year is TEXTBOOK! Beatiful to watch.

Agree with your perceptions. It's frustrating to watch players like Jeter, Artis , Jones and even Young
(at times) play defense. It seems like they need to concentrate and have the desire to play
good D. and they would be much better.

One of the problems last season according to someone who was close to the team was that the players were so excited to get out and play offense that they basically ignored the defensive end.

We and really, Jamie, must watch out for the same thing this year. Defense is a mindset, an attitude. Recent Panther teams have not put the emphasis in this area like earlier teams did. I think Jamie has begun to use playing time to reinforce that mindset. The depth allows that at least in OOC games.
