Eagle View Middle School

Literally laughed out loud. Playing at a middle school field with a bunch of portable bleacher brought in is as PIAA as it gets. I do give them credit in that at least they didnt pick a school district's track and field stadium. It’s so hard to watch sports at those types of stadiums.
Keep Repeating, it’s a middle school field, IT IS NOT.
All the bleachers you are saying are not temporary. It seats 1200 people.

To an extent, I can agree with you that maybe the PIAA could do better,,, where do you suggest ? but this place is a top-notch facility despite your biased opinion.
Is literally less than 2 miles off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and interstate 81. There are dozens of motels within 5 miles of it.

Financial cost is a factor, and bigger venues priced themselves out of the market
It is in a central location in the state and easy to reach from major interstates.
There are enough hotel rooms in the area to accommodate decent size crowds.

I mean, sure, we can call it Cumberland Valley School District's field. They own it. But its not a high school field as you call it. Its the school district's field and its attached to the Middle School so I can call it a MS field all I want.

As for where they should hold it, cost isnt a factor. The PIAA isnt that broke. Charge an extra $2 per ticket for all the playoffs and rent some college or pro facilities. I bet the Philly Union would give you the place for free. And dont say Philly is too far. I coach kids who may someday play in a state championship (probably not but its not unreasonable to think its possible) and I promise you that if you asked them if they'd rather play at Eagle View Middle School before its only 2.5 hours away and is close to the turnpike or Philly Union, they'd wonder why I was even asking that question. Kids want to play on big stages. They don't care how much PIAA has to pay or accessible it is to the turnpike. Playing at a Middle School is inexcusable.

The other thing they can do is split it. Have 1A and 2A play at the middle school. Have 3A and 4A play at better venues

PSU soccer field
St. Francis stadium
Bucknell
Central PA PSAC schools
Hersheypark Stadium

Cumberland Valley is a PA power in soccer. I assume this is where they play their games, and therefore not a rag tag facility. And in all seriousness is 10x better than say a Mt Lebo, for example, a stadium where teams lobby to stay away from because the field is too small. I’m sure SMF knows Lebo very well.

So, playing on a crummy small college field with no parking and limited seating is better or is this just the narrative you want to keep running with because you're getting boat raced in this thread? I don't even think the Penn Sate field has locker rooms. They were using tents. Could be why they're about to dump a ton of money into it.

What I hate about this stupid discussion is I find myself dangerously close to defending the PIAA which I don’t want to do. But the other side of the argument is so ridiculous…

Kids want to play at Hershey. Holding up Hershey bars for pics after a semi win is a big deal for the kids. Going to chocolate world on a Friday night as a team building exercise and then playing a game on a Saturday in a historic and large venue is a big deal. It’s not Disney World but it works. The games should be there. That’s my position.

But here’s the thing. Peters Township is arguably WPIAL’s top program for boys and girls. I don’t even know how many state titles they have. 12? And guess where they play? Their middle school. Why? Because that’s where the stadium is. Donavan McMillan played his high school football at peters township middle school. Western PA’s largest soccer field is at Penn Hills Middle School. South Fayette has a large campus similar to CV. Their stadium is nearest their middle school. Trinity (dare I say) plays football and soccer at the middle school because that’s where the stadium is and I happen to think it’s the best place to watch a game in the WPIAL. These are all just examples. I’m sure there are countless others.

Last thing my team and coaching staff would want to do is play 23-24 games on turf, practice on turf and then in November play a championship game on grass. And the only surface probabky worthy would be PSU and I doubt they want their field chewed up. As a matter of fact, I’m sure of it. In my 25 years and 1000’s of games following HS soccer here, I’ve seen one grass field and that was Butler Middle School because their HS soccer stadium is on a campus with the middle school. Go figure.

PSAC or FCS football stadiums dont have locker rooms? I doubt that.

Also, the locker room thing is a complete non-issue for soccer players. HS soccer players get dressed at home, get on the bus, and go to the field. No locker rooms. Would a locker room at a middle school field be nice? Yea I guess but players want to play on big stages, not middle schools. They dont care about a locker room.

If you gave your team the choice:

Philly Union stadium grass 5 hours away

Middle School turf conveniently located 2.5 hours away

They picking the MS?

Saint Francis has locker rooms but they're up on the hill in a building where you can't even see the stadium so yes, this is something. Like I said, Penn State didn't even have locker rooms at the soccer field the last time I paid any attention. But yeah, big stages have things like locker rooms. Otherwise you're just parsing over the proximity of the name of a building which is pretty much exactly what this thread is all about.

I see your point and we agree that the venue should be a big deal for the kids. Highmark and Hershey fit the bill. But until the Union is a legit option, I’m not going to deal with fiction.

Not sure the point you are trying to make. Some football stadiums are indeed on the grounds of that school district's middle school. And thus should be banned from hosting PIAA championships.

Also, I dont think Dononvan McMillan ever technically played football at Peters Township Middle School Stadium because when he was there, it was the high school so he would have played at a "high school stadium."

You know my favorite soccer stadium in the WPIAL? Seneca Valley. Soccer-only. No football lines. No track. Right on there campus. Probably seats 500-1000. Every school serious about soccer should take a look at that. Perfect HS soccer venue.

What is the building in the endzone at SFU?

I’ve seen college games at st Francis and Cumberland Valley is 1000x a better option than a couple sets of wooden bleachers adjacent to St Francis’ field.

I think he means the football stadium. I'm sure the predominately eastern dominance in HS soccer would love to snake their way over to a school that sits on a back road with maybe two, kind of okay, hotels that aren't really very close.

You’re hung up on the address of a facility. Like it or not, Peters is the benchmark program in the WPIAL. They play at a middle school. And they host plenty of PIAA games there each year.

And I’d be willing to bet that the CV soccer stadium is nicer than Seneca Valley’s. And both are a driver and wedge away from their High Schools.

now that I think about it, I want to say Cal U hosts or has hosted state finals for softball. Think about being a kid from a Philly burb and traveling to California, PA for a final. How exciting.

I think you’re mostly right. Mechanicsburg is about five minutes away from CV, has a good program in their own right (not CV, but consistently strong at the 3A level), and has a soccer-only grass facility, with lights, scoreboards, bathrooms and concessions, at Northside Elementary. They move really weather inclement games to the turf field at the football stadium, but the playing surface is significantly narrower.

It’s very nice, but just like we were saying earlier - no locker rooms (I think the support facility is just bathrooms and concessions) and it holds probably a few hundred folks but there isn’t a press box, which is pretty much a nonstarter for a state championship.

I dont think you realize that I dont care if WPIAL football teams play home games at middle schools or if playoff games take place there. I am perfectly fine with Eagle Valley MS hosting the state semis, as long as they feel there's enough seating. But for a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, it has to be a college or pro venue. I'm sure. It just does. Is the turf newer at the MS than it is at Bucknell or wherever? Maybe. Are the locker rooms better? I guess. Is the concession stand bigger? Are the bleachers comfier? I suppose? But its a Middle School. You dont play your state championships there and you sure as heck dont play the football championships at a HS Track & Field stadium.

I have refrained from commenting on your 1259 other insane comments over the years, ok maybe a couple times.
Kids want to just play… they don’t care about “stages”. Their parents do, or want too as you stated yourself “as a coach”
I’ve actually done that in district and state playoffs .. no one gave a crap if we were playing at Elco, Mechanicsburg, Gettysburg, CV, Lancaster racquet club, Hershey racquet club, downingtown west or the Arthur ash center in Philly … they were just grateful they made it that far and had another opportunity to play and advance

red lot 7C … more than 14 people tailgate there … clown 🤡

Sort of ironic you mention that because Pennsylvania has rarely bothered with a college or pro venue for any of their outdoor state championships. Before Hershey, the championships were at Altoona High School. Hardly a world class facility but it's a decent field with more seating than most PSAC stadiums.

You are totally clueless. Of course, the most important thing is the game itself and not the venue but if you gave the kids a choice between Philly Union, Penn State, some Pennsyltucky college, or Eagle View Middle School, I promise you that literally 0 of your players would choose the middle school. 0. You might say "but its so close to the turnpike, the locker rooms are great, there is ample parking." And they wouldn’t care about any of that.

I think you guys are misunderstanding. I'm not saying players will actively complain about playing a state championship at a MS but if you gave them a choice, 100% of them would rather play on a bigger stage. I was a player in this position before so I know what my friends and I were striving for. A WPIAL Championship, yes. But the thrill of playing on a D1 floor was a huge part of what we wanted. And I know what today's kids want. You obviously do not.

You’re totally clueless, if that is the most important thing to you? And you’re a real pompous rear end, using the term pencil Tucky college, Mr. big shot I’m cool cause I went to Atlantis and met some college coach, BFD.

I have coached 44 seasons of a high school sport, multiple state teams, and too many district team, singles, and doubles qualifiers to even mention, none of these kids gave a crap of where they were playing, because guess what you went and played where you were told. as someone else stated you hung up on an address and you simply can’t admit your wrong that it’s a nice venue.

Most people on this board are right you were simply a total tool bag

Its both. My bball team was really good.

Also, if your team advanced to the state soccer finals and you said, "OK team, the PIAA is allowing us to choose where we play, please fill out this survey."

c) insert Central PA college field

e) I don't care

You are saying that your players would choose "e?" Sorry, buddy, no way. Players want big stages.

SMF: College teams that play minor sports don't need nice places to play because nobody cares and they don't matter.

Also SMF: HS teams that play minor sports need the absolute best college venues because it really matters.

You dont understand what I mean by that and that's not surprising. NCAA Olympic sports dont make money and have very few fans. That's why I say "they dont matter." Obviously they matter to the players, parents, and their small fanbases. No HS sport, not even football makes money. That doesn't mean you should play championship games at a high school and middle school. These are still kids and they should be rewarded with playing somewhere besides a middle school.

So the really good players, like the one kid you wished you could be as you rode the bench and who made you carry his bag, really, really wants to play a game in a small college stadium but when he gets the offer to play D2, he doesn't deserve to use that facility unless it's just the bare bones? I don't know, something like a high school field you might find at a large high school in central Pennsylvania that happens to be next to a middle school?

Nah, that kid whose bag you carried and was annoyed by you didn't care as much as you did. That's the kind of stuff the guys sitting on the end of the bench talked about.
