Embarrassing

bobfree, I don't denigrate players. Maybe you should look up the definition of denigrate. All I say and all I've been saying is that this group of players, every one of them, just don't have the talent to compete consistently at an ACC level. Carr is probably the best of the bunch and he can sometimes score. But he gets beat on defense consistently and is not a good on the ball defender. Same goes for Stewart. Love the kid and he gives us some outside shooting at times, but defense is not his forte. That isn't denigrating them, just stating their obvious deficiencies. I guess when you get a performance review from your boss, if he tells you what you need to improve or where your deficiencies are, you think he's denigrating you. LOL!

We have not improved at all. And you know what they say. You're either improving or getting worse. Nobody stands still. It's all relative to your competition, also. Relative to other ACC teams, we are moving backwards rapidly. And on an absolute basis, we also haven't improved at all, unfortunately. This kid of performance gets coaches fired.

Probably because UNC by that point had their scrubs in and Marcus was playing against bench players? I don't know.

This team needs to LEARN to play defense and rebound. Those are 2 things that are coachable. And they aren't being coached. If we can play defense and rebound, we have a better chance of playing closer games and actually having a chance to knock off some good teams, even if we have awful talent. And recruiting guys with some size might help a little.

I think if Carr sticks around and gets a good coach, he has a chance to approach a level of play similar to Tray Woodall. He isn't as good as Woodall, but he does have some potential. Even with good coaching, that won't be seen until at least his junior year.

You “belittle” and “diminish” his drives late in the game. You belittle his talent, making an unnecessary comment about how even if he gets good coaching he won’t be a good player till he’s a junior

But it's evident to me that we simply need to recruit some much better players.

He has no one coming in next year of any relevance so we're talking 2+ years before any competent player will be on the roster.

The guy was ill-prepared recruitment-wise coming into the job thinking holding on to Dixon's incoming mediocre bunch was all he had to do... then he recruits merely to provide warm bodies in his second class and now stuck w/ a roster of dead-weight, can only attract more mediocre players. He's done. Face it.

You do have some problems with reading comprehension and with the English language, I see. Stating the relative ability and evaluating a player's capabilities is NOT disparaging or belittling him. I stated what his relative abilities are and that at this stage, he isn't as good of a player as Woodall. Also it would take some time with a good coach for him to develop to be close to that kind of a player. Carr has some defensive deficiencies that negatively impact his overall game that need to be coached. That isn't happening.

Now that I've proven your weak accusation about me to be totally false, please run along and stick to things that are more on your level. Maybe you and phil your buddy can discuss your lego collections or video games. You youngsters don't have a clue, do you. You're now on Ignore because your posts are valueless (that means without value, since you're just a kid).

That's funny because out to dinner with my family this weekend we too were talking about Willard. You touched on exactly what we all said - his recruiting was actually quite good almost the entirety of his time at Pitt. He personally was a very nice man - quite the change from Paul Evans - but discipline was an issue.

We also talked about how quickly they named Ben Howland as his successor and how none of us knew much, if anything, about him. We were all like WTF?

Good times.
Sonny Vaccaro told SP to hire Ben. It was 100% an Adidas deal. SP claimed he saw NA (North AZ, not Allegheny) play in a tourney game while he was traveling. Sonny probably sent him a BetaMax tape.

Regardless of agenda, he's right - a lot of basic skills that all these kids have to learn, just aren't getting better. Is it the kids or is it the coaching or is it a combination of both? We should all be concerned about the fundamental issue with setting screens and rebounding.

These kids appear to be trying very hard. So what's the issue? And I get "but their freshman....". I'm not talking actually winning, but they should be a lot better than losing to UNC by 30 pts at this point. JMO.

Again, there are "they are freshman" arguments. But do any of us think these "freshman" are the same as Brandin Knight or Brad Wanamaker or Sam Young as a freshman? Let alone a Dejuan Blair or Chris Taft.

The problem is, they are not just freshman, but most should be freshman at a lower level school.

And these "freshmen" are getting close to being sophomores now with experience. That's the troubling part. I don't see the improvement that would be expected from a group of ACC players.

Comparing them to Young or Knight or Wannamaker as freshmen almost isn't fair.

Were any of those guys starting as freshman ?
Were they surrounded by freshman or were they surrounded by good solid upperclassman ?

I’ll give you Sam Young , the minute I saw him play in the Blue / Gold game I knew he was special , but neither Knight or Brad stood out as exceptional players as freshman . You can add Trey Woodall too , there’s no comparison to Carr at this point ,hands down to Carr . Woodall keep getting better and was a fine player by his senior yr .

Pitts greatness came with strong physcial MATURE teams not with elite recruits ... freshman hardly ever played crucial roles . ( not counting
Blair )

Patterson , Zanna , DJohnson were all redshirted and they’d easily be the best players on this team . Relying on freshman wasn’t the Pitt way and after watching Duke lose to St Johns and Kentucky struggling this yr with elite freshman shows you just how hard it is to rely on freshman to play consistently and win .Lets not even begin to compare their freshman to ours and expecting Pitts freshman to compete in the ACC is rational thinking ?

Add Greyson Allen to Pitts starting lineup Pitt would be a far superior team . Freshman need leadership Pitt has none with Luther out . With no disrespect to Ryan , GAllen will be playing in the NBA next yr Ryan hopefully will be back at Pitt .

Maybe there's another fairy godmother (or godfather like Sonny?) who will tap Heather on the shoulder and whisper a name into her ear? We can always hope! ;)

Also, wasn't Sonny involved later in helping to broker the Ben to the Uclans deal? (Don't hear them called the "Uclans" much anymore these days.)

You’ll be back!

I’m saying that he and others continue to denigrate the current players on this team. He states that Carr isn’t even as talented as Woodall which is unnecessary. That might not be the best example but you know posters have been doing it. People don’t have to think Carr is going to be all conference caliber like I do but they don’t have to go out of their way to minimize his talents.

2nd Point: I feel that Pitt is improving. I used Navy as an example of a game I think we lost due to being inexperienced and feel that right now we are better than them. Other teams have improved as well. Duquesne being one of them though I still would pick Pitt to beat them.
But saying Carr's ceiling is Tray Woodall isn't denigrating him, at all. That is making an evaluation and comparison he thinks is apt. Tray Woodall was a good player on teams which were much, much better. Your opinion is a very, very small minority opinion. I'd say there is almost no chance Marcus Carr is ever an All ACC player. The vast majority of players are not. I think he can eventually be a solid ACC starter on a decent team. The majority of players are not. I'm not sure how that is going out of the way to minimize his talents.

You feel that Pitt is improving. I think most would agree that, save the loss of Luther, we are better now than game 1. Other teams are improving and that is true for them, as well. We aren't winning games. We are still getting curb stomped by good teams. Most folks don't see improvement to the level they would expect if these players are going to be the new foundation of a winning program. On top of that, the recruits we are bringing in aren't any higher ranked. Those things are huge causes for concern.

No worries about losing ncaat games.
No longer a possibility
I sometimes feel Pitt fans and administration can't handle winning. That's why they would rather suck and complain about not winning at all, versus being in a position to win and not winning. It's like the guy in a bar who always asks out the ugly girls because he thinks he has no shot at the hot chick. Why not go for it, you never know! Pitt fans prefer the ugly girl.

We can go around and around....

There really isn’t a point.

Someone says Marcus Carr has great drives during the game and he says that’s because he is playing against scrubs. He’s done things like this multiple times while rushing to a previous coaches defense. I think it’s silly, you don’t. No one has to think Marcus Carr is as good as I do, that isn’t the point. I just feel, rightly or wrongly according to you he and other posters take unnecessary shots at these kids while defending a coach who didn’t want to be here anymore.

To the second point, all teams improve differently. I think Pitt has shown improvement but their competition has improved. When they played competitive vs NC state and Syracuse posters on here commented on how it’s only because those teams played bad. Again, not giving these kids fighting any credit.

Again, you disagree.

As far as improving and recruiting to the level he and the teams needs to? I would agree he just isn’t getting it done.

That's the Picksburgh way. Oh we only beat New England because Brady is a bum. Fire the coach!
