Extremely sensible article on opening College Campuses

Yeah ... she’s a “mess”

there’s not a single scenario presented that’s the least bit unrealistic ... not one.

and the point of money lost doing remote learning versus classroom with an out break piled on is so obvious

People can’t seem to understand... nothing has changed... the virus isn’t going away ... the risk isn’t going away and while the United States leads in horrible data it’s only that “good” because a significant portion of the public is trying to actually do the right thing.

we need creative solutions going forward period.

How is this for a creative solution: Open up. Those willing to risk being in society, and probably get exposed, should go out. Those at higher risk or a different risk assessment should stay home. Most of what is learned in college is done outside of class. Take that away and kids are far better off reading and learning in their own than they are paying $50k/year for zoom classes.

You are not being realistic. Neither is the author of the article. You both are saying that unless there is a vaccine....we need to stop our lives. Who are you to tell people what they should do and how they need to live their lives?

Both sides of the argument have the market cornered on stupid. I'm of the, "stay away from me in public and be kind enough to inconvenience yourself for twenty minutes or so while you're in a store by wearing a mask." But I had to yell at some simpleton who was breathing on my neck in line on Saturday without a mask. Nothing works if everyone can't agree to show a little respect towards one another.

I'm all for social distancing and wearing a mask. It is very contagious....I know because I had it....so did my children and my sister's family. I've got news for all the doomsday people....it is not that bad as long as you are young and healthy.....like.....like.....wait for it.......college kids.

How is not opening up a campus and finding other solutions either stopping or interference in your life? What a load of bullshit. The author of the article takes great pains in discussion at length of the ramifications...

you aren’t... you’re just pulling some bullshit herd immunity argument which doesn’t apply here.

We’ve had the number of deaths we’ve had while for the most part observing stay at home Nationally

the fall by all accounts will bring about a second possibly worse wave especially in conjunction with the flu... and you want to open it all up?

look I’m not psyched about the fact we may wind up home schooling our kids in the fall ... not psyched at all but I’m tired of lazy argument based on pretty minor inconveniences like missing football etc... I’ll definitely do what I need to .

Wait for it

college kids spread it to other college kids who spread it to instructors, Professors, administrators, coaches, trainers and anyone else working on campus who then take it to their families.

And while I’m hardly an expert it seems to be pretty clear that being in an enclosed space for an extended period of time is about the worst thing we can be doing.

I certainly don’t have the answers. But let’s open it up and let those who wanna risk it to go for it - isn’t a good strategy.

If damage was limited to that person - I’m all for it. I admit I’m not big a risk taker. But for those who are - generally speaking - you wanna risk harming or killing yourself - have at it. But it’s not quite that simple with this disease.

So many more people have been exposed to this then you would ever think. People are finding out they had the virus as early as January but it was not tested back then.

Yes...people are going to get this. That is one thing we can all be certain. If you don't understand that.....stay in your house and don't come out. No one is forcing you to leave your home.

Bunch of scared women on this board.

It’s definitely not limited to only the “college kids”...

that’s why the whole argument over “interference in mah life“ is bullshit... you put others at risk & clearly it’s not as simple as some people just stay home...it affects anyone employed at the school.

look at the church story in California one positive COVID person exposes 180 people at a church...(Now for me I’m not headed out to church any time soon)... but those people had no choice because of one person.

Bullshit you obviously haven’t seen how some smaller schools are acting in regards to expectations of employees , lack of safeguards etc.

Pitt is very much ahead of the herd compared with some schools Be thankful. Don’t be a jackass.

I am over 70 but in excellent health--not on meds for anything and I work out 3x week AND I am fairly confidant I had a mild case in early to mid-March (dry cough + dry sinus congestion + pink eye for 2-3 weeks). No fever or shortness of breath, however.

Here is how I see it. I suspect and believe that if we stay seriously locked down for too long we will have more new total avoidable deaths occurring from a variety of other causes some, but not all, related to the economic effects (Examples--consequences of delayed medical exams, testing and surgical procedures, suicides, domestic violence, drug overdoses, alcohol related deaths, murders during robberies, etc.) than we would have from Covid if we open up. So, you pick the lesser of two evils and open up while taking even more drastic than current measures to protect the most vulnerable. For example--at nursing homes all family visitors, medical staff and support staff are tested every time and immediately prior to entering the facility even if they come and go more than once per day plus greatly increase the cleaning and sanitation schedule in these facilities. All employees and visitors wear masks and practice social distancing form the residents. All people living with at risk people practice social distancing and mask wearing at home especially toward the person(s) at risk.

Bottom line--IMHO we should consider the bigger health and economic picture rather than stick with the current Covid only tunnel vision approach, IMHO.

Opening up looks like it’s only gonna do so much. Can’t be all that surprising.

Actually you are wrong. I created a Covid task force to supplement the shoddy government measures that your boy Wolf is trying to use as “safety” in schools. This included teacher and student mental health which is becoming a true issue. Many kids are going to have PTSD when they return to school because of nancies like yourself are telling them they could die. You want a vaccine like the rest of us but it is not coming in the next year. We flattened the curve and we identified who this impacts most.......and it is not young people so stop stealing their lives from them.

Anyone that isn't comfortable returning to their place of employment can collect unemployment. If they are terminated I am sure there are a lot of lawyers who are willing to take the case.

People understand completely you clown.
Most people in America are over this and arent following the stupid guidelines.
Fyi
The virus may never go away.
The risk is minimal, most healthy people are asymtomatic, others have mild cases, and some with health issues are at risk.

People are realizing they should have a choice, those who want to hide stay home thats people like you stay home, most want to get back to normal. Now!
Miserable people like you want to make other people miserable and force them to not work, not have fun and stay home. The miserable fight hard for company.

The more people exposed to the virus, get the virus and recover the better that build up immunity in the population. The death rate once all people who had the virus, didnt know it, and recovered is estimated to be 1.8 % represented by 99.8% people who have underlying health issues.

The risk is minimal thats why people are coming out of the woodwork to get back to normal because they now realize this isnt as advertised.

Death counts are inflated since hospitals get paid more for Covid patients rather than regular patients so why not classify someone as Covid they die of cancer its a Covid death.
This has been in the news HC offcials also classify a death as Covid because based on condition they "presume" it was Covid.

Businesses are opening up some allowed and some are just doing it, we're at the beach now, were on the beach today it was packed, the official opening is 6/1 and NO masks are required.

Here's are partial list of things opening.
NJ retail businesses are opening
PA & NJ campgrounds, boat marinas, and boat charter activity is open
NJ beach hotels open 6/1
NJ beaches and boardwalks 6/1 - no masks required
Golf courses are open and packed
NJ restaurants and casino's expected to open 6/1 or 6/15
Cruise lines open in August
Disney opens in July
PA and most other schools will open in Sept
College and pro football will open
Some college conferences will have fans like the BIG10, SEC, and the BIG12. Those that dont will be viewed as secondary conferences and programs.

A Bellmayre NJ gym opened today with out permission, hundreds of customers and supporters showed up.
The Gov called the State Police they came, walked through the gym,, talked to the owner, came outside to hundreds of supporters of the gym , announced this gym has opened in violation of state closure order and said to the customers and supporters Have A Nice Day the people cheered and the NJ St Police left.
The police arent even on board at this point in the foolish process.

America is opening, cases will go up, eventually level off, decline slowly, the only metric is hospital capacity which is at an all time low right now, a vaccine may never be developed, treatments will be available and the economy will be rolling.

Trump will win reelection and thats the only reason you want a continued shutdown and that makes you mad. LOL!

Stay home!

Here's the thing with colleges:

- The only reason to open them is to avoid financial disasters. Having kids on campus is not "essential." In contrast, having kids in elementary school and HS in person IS essential. College kids have 2 choices: online classes or redshirting themselves a year. A 3rd grader or 10th grader doesn't have a choice.

I don't see how anyone thinks its a good idea for thousands of kids from all across the US (and world) get together in small towns in close quarters. If there is ONE business to keep shut down, it would have to be college campuses. It seems to pose the biggest risk for mass spread.

I agree with you here and also that the article is an intelligent summary of the problems encountered by the schools. The writer lost me when after rightfully comparing the situation to others including the great depression insists that the government bail the colleges out. The colleges should not be bailed out, let them cut cost, etc., lower wages and share in the problem that the average american is dealing with, but I agree with you that colleges and to a greater degree ( because of mandatory attendance laws) the public schools k12 are in a horrific mess. Putting the blinders on will not solve the problem, IMO.

If you want to date, then date.

if you don’t want to date, don’t date.

great survey, changing the world.
Bingo
If you don't want to do things don't.

Millions of other Americans want to end this and get on with life.

Thats one of those surveys that includes a small number of targeted respondents to get the desired answer.

I listen to a number of talk radio shows, the hosts talk to lots of people and I hear two hosts who made the comment the majority of people they speak to on the phone or in person want the country to open.

The surveys generate a manufactured answer for those support destroying America!

Come on tough guy then... address the rest and quit hiding behind the young people argument... cause that’s EXACTLY what you’re doing ... everyone on campus is not 19 years old ( nor should they be) tell us ... what’s your answer for controlling these situations... how did the writer put it...something like “managing a year long Rock festival “( paraphrased)....? What’s your answer for what they are now seeing with very young kids turned up with COVID linked problems (70 in France after they put them in school again)?

sounds like you’re only playing to the pomp and circumstance and prom and graduation crowd? Where’s the beef? Because from a practical workable standpoint just sending people back clearly isn’t going to work. Nor is forcing staff back without major major changes

it’s pretty obvious when some of you guys watch Jaws every now and then you view the friggen Mayor as the “Good guy”... lolz

I’ll stick with Chief Brody , Hooper and Quint....

BTW- not sure where you get “ my boy Wolfe” since I’ve lived in GA for 8 years and this state has been continually making news for all the wrong reasons lately. Including churches reopening aaannnnddd immediately closing again...numbers spiking ... data being fudged...etc...I’m seeing lots of really bad examples
