Last year I said Xavier Johnson will not be the starting PG on an NCAA Tournament team and he said he would. Well, Indiana made it by the skin of their teeth, coming back from 17 down with 12:00 left on Thursday, and beating Illinois Friday just to make it to Dayton as the very last team in the field. So congratulations......I guess.

So you were wrong? I’m shocked.

I couldn't have been closer to getting it right. Last team in the field. Needed miraculous comeback Thursday to stay alive. But still a rare loss.

I will redeem myself when Hugley "proves" he is an ACC-level player by being all-league. Its amazing there's a handful of people who don't think the kid is an ACC player. He is unguardable 1 on 1.

Easy there SMF. You’ll be proven right not when Hugley proves he’s an ACC player, but when he proves he’s the best center in college basketball.

Correct. And I never said he wasn’t an ACC player. I said he was a high volume, bottom tier team ACC player and he should go to the A10 and dominate. Not a single word wrong there

He will be All-ACC (not HM) next year. Do you disagree with this prediction?

0.0 percent chance he’s All ACC next year (if he’s at Pitt).

If Bacot comes back, barring injuries the first 2 all ACc centers are decided between him and Derek Lively
So let’s make this clear. Is this any all ACC team including honorable mention? Set the parameters.

Hugley made Bacot look JV.

Since you know college basketball so well, you should know that all-league teams arent decided based on the 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center format. All 3 of those guys can be 1st team. You can have 5 centers on the 1st team, hypothetically if they're the best 5 players in the league.

And to be clear, this is Hugley is at Pitt. I do predict he will not transfer but I think there's a slight chance he declares for the draft and plays in the G-league.

Good call on Derek Lively from Bellefonte, Pennsylvania (suburban State College), who is the #1 or #2 incoming player in the country. He looks like a complete stud.

That he is. Rim protector, rebounder, finisher, can shoot it, elite touch. Will battle Bacot for the best post in the league

Crazy thing is if Chambers would have stayed at Penn State they would have had a fighting chance with him. He blew up so much the last few years that he was probably always going to end up at a blue blood, but his mom’s office is down the hall from Chambers and he grew up around their program.

Yeah, I don’t think it was going that way either way. But the mom connect to PSU should’ve at least gave them a fighters chance with the new staff.

Unrelated but it's unbelievable to me that Bacot hasn't gone to the NBA yet. Has the high school and college pedigree, size is adequate, but he just never became that dude.

projecting him in the NBA..

he's an undersized 5. Hardly any range, but the FT shooting is encouraging for developing the range. Bigger centers will hold him down in the post. Bigger forwards will run by him on defense and stretch him out. He's not a plus defender and would get picked apart in switches. if he has any hope of making it to the next level, he needs to develop some range.

Look at guys like Christian Wood. 6'11". 17-10/game shooting 38% from 3. Ridiculous wing span. He's not even an NBA All Star. Hugley simply doesn't fit in the NBA right now.

it would be a massive mistake to declare this offseason.

Has no game outside of 2 feet from the basket.

plenty of NBA centers don't have range. He's improved his rim protecting this year and he's one of the best rebounders in college hoops. Has the size to defend the 5, but again, he'd be limited in the NBA. Unless you're a Capela or Gobert with elite athleticism, defensive instincts, and rim running ability, you need to be able to shoot the ball.

You’re correct on every point but he’s better off going now if any team will even G league him and get NBA training than 20 hours a week in college

With the ACC tournament being playing in Brooklyn last weekend, maybe this is the time to revisit the greatest SMF prediction ever.

After it was announced that Pitt and Syracuse were joining the ACC SMF declared that the ACC basketball tournament would be played at Madison Square Garden no later than 2016. When people pointed out to him that the deal between the Big East and MSG ran longer than 2016 he said that it didn't matter, that MSG would drop the Big East in a heartbeat for the chance to get even one ACC tournament, even if it meant getting sued by the Big East.

Fast forward to what actually happened, MSG announces that they are extending their deal with the Big East and the ACC announces that they have reached a deal with the A10 so that the ACC could play their 2017 tournament at the Barclays Center.

And with a straight face (assumedly) SMF declared that he got his prediction correct. Because 2017 was clearly before 2016 and the Barclays Center is really just another name for Madison Square Garden.

ACC in NYC. Thanks for reminding us of one of my all-time great predictions.

You guess? That would be Pitt's biggest basketball accomplishment in a decade if they could do something awesome like sneak into the 1st 4 :)
