Fleck and WMU getting a lesson in big boy football...

The well earned bashing of the B1G CONFERENCE is on every non-B1G message board and has nothing to do with Pitt.

2-0 against the dreck of the B10. So what.

All the B10 bashing on this board would sound a lot better if we had beaten the mediocre B10 team we played in the Pinstripe.

And once again our loss to NW and the B1G's abysmal bowl showing are not mutually exclusive. They both can be true.

you ain't in the MAC anymore baby.
Don't. Make. Declarative. Posts. During. The. First. Half. Of. A. Contest.

More often than not, you end up looking stupid.... see the VT-Arkansas game as example 1.

Yeah, talking smack in the 1st quarter is usually not a good idea. Reminds me when Doke mentioned early on how VT was getting obliterated(his word) in their bowl game....then they scored 35 straight points and won their game. Or when posters on this board were making fun of the Maryland/BC bowl game....and they were making fun before we played our bowl game. Ditto for last year when posters made fun of other schools before our Navy bowl game.

Certainly. We have found ways in the past to lose bowl games in more embarrassing fashion to worse teams than NWU. it's become kind of a tradition actually.

Clemson and FSU are year in year out head and shoulders the class of the ACC. FSU barely beat Michigan with 2 of Michigan's all-American players out of the game. Clemson has been the second best team all year despite laying their egg against us and anyone who has watched OSU this season knew that they weren't nearly as good as their ranking. The #2 team in the ACC standings was curb stomped by an 8-4 SEC team that liost to Wisconsin. The rest of the ACC is meh as always.

The only thing this Bowl season has shown is what most people know already-that the best football in the country consistently comes from the Deep South. There are occasional outliers but overall it's the southern powers and then everyone else.

Did you happen to notice how amazingly average Florida State was this year? Did you happen to notice that Louisville put 60 on them? Did you happen to notice North Carolina beat them at Doak? Did you happen to notice FSU needed a furious comeback to beat Average ass nc state? This isn't exactly the Noles with Jameis.

Precisely why I'm happy Pitt is in the ACC. It opens our recruiting into those areas that are saturated with good players.

Right-that's why I qualified my post with "year in year out."

You made my point for me-outside of Clemson, the ACC's best wasn't all that good this year. Louisville, FSU, UNC. If you want to argue that FSU proved it was better than short handed Michigan in that game, where FSU needed a freak 70 yard kick return in the last minute to win by one point, be my guest-but it's a very weak argument. What happened to Louisville speaks for itself. UNC lost to the PAC 12's #5.

FSU was clearly the better team, and both team's had injuries to deal with. If you want use that lame excuse, then Pitt beats NW if it weren't for injuries.

And FSU was the ACC's #4. And UNC was the ACC's #5. Did you actually look at the ACC standings or are you just ass firing?

First of all its ridiculous that Wisconsin is ranked # 8 and that W Mich is ranked where they are.
The BIG 10 ranking are inflated primarily due to the conference strength in the past and big name coaching staffs.
Right now its a terrible conference which might not have a top 10 team.
Their ranking are inflated, they play eachother, so teams like the Nitters seem to be killing it but they're playing mediocore teams.
All this bad ranking math allows a non P5 team like W. Mich to look good against an overrated Wisconsin team which probably should be ranked somewhere 20 -25 just like Ohio St which explains the Nitters ranking.
So why not add more lunacy to the ranking process by employing the advanced version of everyone gets a trophy and rank W. Mich 15 so the ranking process looks "fair" ( I hate that word).
If you base the outcome of any process on lets look at history ( the BIG10 ) and lets make it "fair" rather than on merit/current accomplishments don't expect accurate results!

What it shows is PITT football has a lot of work to do and isn't close to being out of the woods!
Not much improvement in the last six years and how many coaches???? And AD's?
Back to the drawing board. We lost to a bad team from a bad conference!

Western Michigan lost by 1 score and *nearly* had the on-side kick with 3 minutes left.

Against a top-10 team whose losses were all by 1 score, all against top-6 teams.

I'd hardly say WMU was "given a lesson in big bowl football."

I don't think you will find one person here who wouldn't say Pitt has a lot of work to do. It is what it is. Hopefully we make more strides in HCPN's 3 year.

Let em ask you this: Do you think Chryst would have beaten Penn State OR Clemson this year? Saying that we haven't made improvements in the last 3 years is wrong IMHO even if you point to the fact that we don't lose those WTF games anymore. (And no the bowl game wasn't one of those - I'm talking about Youngstown, etc.)

Well my timeframe was longer than 3 yrs ago I'm saying prior to when the coaching carosel started running at PITT.
I wouldn't count Penn St as beating a top team because they aren't. Their ranking is based on beating other BIG overrated teams.
Clemson yes but even Wanny pulled off one of them remember West Virginia!
IMO its kind of a push going back to the beginning of coaching carosel!

I was commenting on your statement of not much improvement in the last 6 years. I totally disagree.

Well ranked # 23 we just lost an important bowl game to a bad BIG team with an average coaching staff?
How do you explain Miami?
We couldn't pull out a win in the close ones?
And even Wanny pulled out a big win against a ranked team WV!

OK. I'm losing you here. I think we all agree we lost that game. Does that negate all other strides that have been made in the last 3 years?

I don't think it does at all. I think we have admitted we lost when we probably shouldn't. Doesn't take away from me being able to say the B1G overall is clearly overrated.
I guess it is all a matter of the context in which it is done. Nothing wrong with making a fair assessment of the BIg or any conference relative to others. But many a Pitt fan don't stop there, it is more about looking down on, ridiculing, making fun of the other conference. Considering we couldn't beat what was considered a lower level BIG team, that's when it looks stupid.

In a general sense, just about every year it is pointless to debate who the better conference is during the couse of the year, OOC schedules are such that the sample size is way too small to make an assessment based on anything other than reputation. Now with the bowls you get a little better idea. This year, there was 2 primary reasons early on why the BIG was considered so strong, Wisky beating LSU and OSU beating OKLA, to a lesser extent add in Mich beating COLO but that wasn't given much weight til later in the year after seeing Colo's success. Again, not a lot of data points to make a real assessment from. And next year will be more of the same.

Reread my previous post? 7-5, 8-4 regular season record.
One big win we had one before WV, close losses, one unexplained blowout Miami, just like the past!

You got me - I do enjoy making fun of the B1G. It gives me pleasure watching them get beat down in bowl games. Not sure why I need to be ashamed of this in any way. But if it makes you think less of me, have at it.

And - we beat Clemson on the road and haven't lost any WTF games. So, I happen to think we've made strides. But I can understand that you don't. Peace.

GT was a close window we pulled out as well as clemson and psu.

I agreed with you on Clemson but we matched that back under Wanny when we beat a # 2 ranked WV on the road.
Miami was a key game and was a WTF game.
We weren't able to retain our OC.
We lost two bowl games in a row on national TV something that recruits watch and remember.
And we're not knocking down top recruits.
Same stuff as in the past!

I think people like Narduzzi I do as well but the facts to support improvement aren't there!

my comments were more in general w/r to anyone making fun of the B1G and my thoughts on how it looks, not really directed specifically at you. I think I just made the mistake of posted it as a reply to your post as opposed to putting it at the bottom of the thread.

But I learned my lesson, I had one other dialogue with you a good while back. Don't even remember what it was about but do recall you getting huffy then as well. I'll know now to steer clear of discussing/debating anything with you going forward, even if I wasn't intending this current one to be directly with you.

I'm sorry if disagreeing upsets you. I think I'm being very respectful and not demeaning of your opinion at all. I wouldn't get so dramatic about it. It's just a sports message board. HNY!
