** On most Saturday nights, it’s a routine for me to run out and grab some take-out dinner for my Wife and Son.

** A big part of the appeal of this routine is to enjoy a tasty malt beverage at the bar while waiting for my order’s completion.

** It’s a chance to get out and see what is new on tap at several of the area’s finer establishments with a nice craft brew selection.

** But tonight’s while-I-wait beer choice was easy, even if not the most adventurous. Tonight, I ordered a Sierra Nevada, almost ordinary by beer snob standards.

** Sierra Nevada was the brand that first spearheaded the craft brew phenomenon from their home in Chico, California. And knowing that Chico is the home of the Panther’s Sterling Smith, I knew I had to in his honor.

** Sterling’s performance this afternoon was the greatest of his short Panther career, in a game it was needed so much for so many reasons.

** Sterlings’s performance was needed because our usual scoring subjects were not at their best, and in the case of Sheldon, not even on the court.

** He was in all ways splendid, and was really the huge difference maker this day.

** But he was needed so much more because a loss in this game could have been quite devastating to our Panthers.

** Our men seem to be teetering between being a pretty good offensive good with defensive issues, and a team who could let it all slip away. No one needs to be reminded of that as a fitting description of last year’s Panthers.

** I don’t think there is a beer brewed in Hampton PA, but if I knew of one I would have ordered that too.

** Ryan has so much to be proud of regarding the minutes he gave to his team today. So often, people will talk about the “little things” teams need to win, like timely rebounds, taking charges, or playing just enough defense. One could argue that the Panthers haven’t really had a “little things” player for quite some time. Ryan was the little things player today, and his impact was huge.

** To this moment, Ryan’s drive, offensive rebound, and dish to Jamel for the three is the biggest play of the year.

** Perhaps, I should have ordered a Bell's Two Hearted Ale for Ryan. He showed that kind of heart.

** Mike Young’s play in the first half of this game wasn’t even worthy of a Duquesne Pilsner. But there’s no sense on dwelling on that any further. Mike turned it around in the second half with enough of performance that his team was able to win this one.

** Before talking about “winning this one,” I want to make clear that I don’t think this win was especially remarkable, nor do I think it signaled that the Panthers have turned any important corners.

** Nonetheless, this win was probably much more unlikely than we might think.

** The Panthers didn’t come back from 10 down on the road with great offense. Heck, I can’t even say that the played especially great defense in the second half either, although it was much better than the all-to-typical abysmal defense played in the first half.

** While the Panthers never really showed physical toughness throughout this game, they did demonstrate more than enough mental toughness to win this. This is what truly mattered.

** This game was really more about “finding a way to win,” and that’s just what happened today. Hopefully this difference was because the Panthers are starting to understand this. Hopefully.

** Beer snobs like me know the difference between ales and lagers. Ale’s tend to have sharper, fruitier flavors while lagers are more smooth. Along these lines, lagers aren’t necessary considered the most appreciated beers, but are sometimes more consistent or sturdy.

** However, when lagers are hitting big three point shots to get your team back in the game, they can surely seem much more appealing. James was a fine lager today.

** I’m not sure who needed this game more, the Panther team or their fans.

** Not many believe in this team, and I’m sorry to say that I’ve even included myself in the non-believer group at times. Down ten at halftime in this one, I’ll readily confess that my usually positive self didn’t see a turnaround coming.

** OK, that’s not really true. I was thinking perhaps that if the Panthers caught fire, they might pull it out. But they never really did catch fire.

** Instead, we watched our team methodically take care of business to get the job done. I’m wondering what was the last tough game we have actually won when we didn’t shoot well.

** We can’t know if this is the beginning of any kind of important trend, but it was certainly a welcome change.

** So I’ll end this night thinking about the next fine beer I’m going to drink to savior this tasty ACC road win. Cheers!

Today Pitt got a much needed win to "calm the storm" from the fans, & the media. 16-3 & 5-2 is good & this team is still improving. Also, they showed they can be a "tough" team today by coming back & winning a tight one on the road.

Go Pitt...

--Speaking of "dribbles" - how about the Globetrotter act that Sterling went into to keep control of the ball after he intercepted that one pass. That was awesome.

Likely the nearest brewery to Hampton is Hop Farm, which is likely a 20 minute ride down route 8 on a Saturday night (barring two feet of snow obviously).

To be honest, I never really doubted Pitt would be in this game at the end. I'm not one of those relentlessly optimistic people mind you, but I felt like FSU's lead was the confluence of poor play by Pitt and some really good shooting by FSU. Knowing Hamilton was on their bench and muttering the Dixon mantra of "we knew they wouldn't shoot it that way all night" I held out hope.

Agree with your point about mental toughness. And it was nice to see Ryan overcome his inconsistencies and his tendency to sometimes play softer than his size would allow.

All that said, this Pitt team will likely show the flashes of good and bad we're discussing the remainder of the season. It's who they are. However, if they can flip the switch they'll be a tough out in March. If they can't, they'll have to rely on the luck of the draw and hope for the right matchups.

Me, too. We had about 4 good shots go in & spin out. I think ANY team coached by Hamilton is vulnerable. Just kept saying..."Keep playing" in the second half...and that's what we did. Whittle the lead to 4, it goes back to 9, whittle to 3, ditto, whittle to 2...same. Then we miss FTs but prevail with a late surge. Great win. Held a hot-shooting team to 29 points in the second. Lot more fight.

Thanks -- nice to hear -- enjoy your thoughts on the Lady Panthers as well.

While I'm thrilled at the "mental toughness" we showed to win, it's hard not to remember that mental toughness has never been a description of Leonard Hamilton teams.

Dixon made a great adjustment by switching defenses in the second half, sometimes within a possession.

Hamilton is a boob. No lead is safe with him at the helm.

Kudos to Jamie and the boys.

Luther is our Kurt Rambis.

Do we need to win 4 of 10 down the stretch? That makes us a 20-win team, but is that good enough for the dance? Or do we need to win 21 total to feel safe? I like what I saw tonight, but the ACC is so bunched up right now. We could lose to Clemson and beat Duke.

DT: I think I have a bottle left of Sierra Nevada Seasonal "Celebration Ale". I think that would be appropriate tonight. Nice comeback Panthers; took all of the second half but the result is what we fans needed! ;^)

That Celebration is getting old -- drink it now!!

I have ONE bottle left of that beer. I think I may enjoy it in the next few minutes.

As for this game and DT's dribbles I think I can boil down to my feelings as..... A summer get together amongst friends, warm breezes, laughter, good conversation and memories, all beer is good beer in that setting. And any road win in conference is a great win.

I was busy and missed most of the game. Was disappointed by the halftime score but was lucky enough to tune in for the last 5 minutes.

Anyway, does Leonard "Job Security" Hamilton have the best job in sports? I mean 3 places he's skated by doing this. Must be nice.

Some people complain about Dixon maybe over coaching, but I would take that any day over Hamilton's non coaching. Every commercial break he was just sitting there on the bench doing nothing. Was just sitting there when his team got called for five seconds. He must be thinking, "everyone's doing something. I'm going to do nothing".

We have 11 left, not 10. Actually.. since we're guaranteed one game in the ACC Tourney, we have 12 left.

If we win 6 of the 12 we have remaining, we'll be 22-9/11-8 at worst. That's a lock.

Hamilton did little to stop his team from unraveling and was little better than a fan watching his team turn a probable victory into defeat.

I am impressed by how Pitt came back on won this game. There was a period when Pitt was just down by three and they squandered several positions to either cut the lead to one or tie it. I confess when C. Jone's 3pt shot rattled out, I was thinking it was just not meant to be. However, this team endured bad fortune to earn a victory. It's only 20 minutes so I am not optimistic that we have seen a new Pitt. However, maybe it's the inflection point on this team's lack of toughness and grit.

DT, it's not THAT old - I think I bought it right before Christmas. But if you insist I will chug it and the other two I have. I'm switching to drinking mostly Stout this time of the year. It's been downright cold in our neighborhood - might dip below 50deg tonight! ;^)

It was likely brewed around Nov 1, if not earlier. Celebration in February is not a good thing, trust me!

When Chris' 3 rattled out, I feared the exact same thing.

But what if I don't drink? Next time instead of beer references would you mind using a few "card" references or something so I can relate lol??

No comment on the game other than that we really needed that win.

Now for the beer.....during the course of this day and night I enjoyed the following:

-Great Lakes Conway's Irish Ale
-Keewenaw Lift Bridge Brown Ale
-Greenbush Tractor Cream Ale
-New Holland Cabin Fever

Excellent all the way around. The Conways and the Cabin Fever were my faves.. I tend to like a smoother, less bitter, less hoppy brew. These were all from breweries I've been to, with 3 of the 4 located here in Michigan. If you can get any of them, try them. I think you'll enjoy them.

Hop Farm, Roundabout, Grist House, and Draai Laag are all about equidistant from Hampton so any of those would work.

Caliente also does some collaboration brews now and they have a Hampton location.

You are this unhinged on a message board without being drunk? Wow.
Don't drink any alcohol, never liked it. Would rather have a Snapple Iced Tea over a beer(although not too many because of the sugar content but that's another story).

Best dribble ever.....

Smith hitting the 2 FTs and Ryan's rebound made me want to reach for a brew.....and I don't drink

I opened a Troegs Nugget Nectar as soon the game ended. This is an especially good batch this year and tasted even better after this somewhat unlikely win.
