Former Panther Parker Stewart- this has to be a record

Some people just want to do it just to say they did. If I could of played a silly game for a few years for pay, I would of jumped at it, and not be in a big rush to get to the COMPLETE DEPRESSING SOUL CRUSHING BOREDOM of the "real world".

Well, it's not like he got a degree in anything that will get him a job that pays enough to support a family, or even himself. He'd have to go back to graduate school to get something usable. And good for him that he graduated in 2 years. I would hope he would, given the extra summer work that student-athletes get and the course of study. If he'd have graduated in 2 or 3 years and gotten a degree in Finance or Engineering, then that would have been an accomplishment.

So given all of that and assuming he's not going back to graduate school, probably playing somewhere to make a few bucks for a little while might be his best option for now. But it won't last.

If you make the "real world" an exercise in boredom and it's "soul crushing", then you're doing something wrong.

Not doing anything wrong, just saying if you can do something you like for pay for a few years, why not? Why be in a rush to get to your desk job in "finance or engineering"? Are you serious though? You can't get a job to support a family outside of finance and engineering? Better tell all those people who are encouraging kids to go to trade school instead of college that their lives will suck. And how do you know he can't get a job with the degree he already has? If you can't see how doing something like playing pro basketball in foreign countries for a few years would be extremely exciting and fulfilling, then you obviously have no soul to crush anyways, so get back to your desk - time is money!

Well, when it is the only thread with the most recent posts, not much other choice.

Just keep hoping someone will have hijacked it onto another topic. ;);):):)

I never said Engineering and Finance were the only 2 careers worth pursuing. They were examples! LOL! That seems to have gone over your head.

Also, I am a big proponent of kids going to trade schools to learn a trade to make a living. It's a hell of a lot better than going to a 4 year school and getting a useless degree and no job afterwards. And trades pay a lot more than social work or flipping burgers. Maybe that would have been better for Stewart....go to trade school and learn a trade.

As for his basketball "career" in a foreign country, I really don't give a rat's ass what he does. If he decides to do that, he should do it but it won't last more than a couple of years. What's he going to do after 2 or 3 years of playing a game?

I guess I've been around enough and have seen too many young men and women throw their college years away and see too many of them get into careers that aren't productive or fulfilling. Kids like to say follow your dreams. That's the worst advice to give. Yes, do something you like, but make sure it will help you live and support a family or yourself. If you don't, you'll end up like so many of these athletes.....broke and out of work with no prospects for work in any field.

I'm a realist and I do have a soul. I also have a brain.

A degree is only as useless as you choose to make it.

Living your dream of playing a sport you love and getting paid for it is something no one will ever regret . Not following your dreams is what you’ll regret!

Plus if he wants a graduate degree he still has three years to get one. Or if he wants to get another undergraduate degree in something else, still plenty of time for that as well. And then when he's done playing basketball, stepping into a job interview and being able to talk about playing professional basketball in Europe for a few years is never going to hurt his cause. He won't get a job on that alone, but there certainly could be times when something like that tips a close decision in his favor.
