I thought that Franklin was pretty classy during his interview on the ESPN CFP show. Focused on the team being excited with their season despite clearly being frustrated at not being selected for the CFP.

However, when asked about future scheduling, he stated that the way to schedule is to try to be undefeated in non-conference play and win the conference championship. It seemed to be his politically correct way of saying he wants PSU's non-con schedule to be bottom-feeders only. Doesnt bode well for any future scheduling of Pitt-PSU series, which is a shame.

Honestly, I was at a bar last night and it was packed with PsU fans. None of them reacted towards me when I openly rooted for Wisconsin and tried to egg them on. I spoke with the owner later on who was all PsU and he said he was just happy to get to where they were at, that none of them expected it this year. Pretty cool bunch and very classy if you ask me.

that has always been the Franklin model. Schedule cupcakes, Look at his schedule at Vandy. Of course TD_nitter will chime in defending his wonder boy, but his wins have largely been against cupcakes.

I am thinking when Slick Jimmy woke up this morning and cleared his head his morning prayer included something about being thankful for not having to play Alabama.

There is no "best" way to schedule:

a) if Ohio State plays Akron intead of Oklahoma, they dont make it. They scheduled a tough game, won it, and were rewarded.

b) PSU scheduled a rivalry game, lost it, and were punished. Had they played a cupcake, they are in.

c) Wash played cupcakes. Had they played a good team and lost, they are out.

So while scheduling light helped Washington, scheduling tough helped Ohio State. PSU went middle of the road and it hurt them.

Not many schools would have scheduled OK St & Ped St as OOC games!

Ped st fans will tell you that PITT & Temple are not worthy of games when everyone knows outside the cult that they do not want to get their asses beat!

Agree the committee decision likely ends any thought of extending the PSU-Pitt series. Based on what just happened, not good for either school. Schedule puss and try to win the conference. The Washington model will prevail until the system is overhauled again.

Absolutely. That's why Va Tech, Auburn, Pitt, and W Virginia are on the non conference.

Franklin has changed much since coming to Penn State in 2013-14, Coach James was nothing but a Class Act on commenting how he felt his Players and Team deserved and earned a NCS Playoff Invite and how he felt bad for his Players!

I admire how he handled himself and it will go a long way to gain more respect for the 2017 Season. James did not whine, cry, or make excuses and just stated facts that I feel backed him up, but he also took just missing the Invite as a Classy Man he is and will use it to Win his Bowl Game into the next 2017 Season!

39 point loss to UM also factored heavily in committee decision. So I'm not sure a W over Buffalo at home in place of a close L to Pitt on the road alone makes the difference for PSU. Could have still gone either way.

I think it really just depends which team is the team with 1 loss. If it is a perceived superior team, like Ohio State, they will get the benefit of the doubt. If it is a team that is viewed by the talking heads as a "lesser" team, then it will be held against them. There is too much human opinion that goes into the selection, which takes the fairness out of it. I think only conference champs should go-would eliminate all of the B.S. If you win your conference, you get to keep playing, and if you lose, you don't. Every P5 team knows the rules, and has a fair chance every year.

12-1 BT Champ with wins over OSU, Wis, Temple over 12-1 P12 Champ with wins over Col,Stan, Utah. Come on. Not close.

Washington did play a bcs team.
It just turns out Rutgers was horrifically bad.
Anyone know when that series was scheduled?

Well they did beat two top 6 teams and outscored their opposition in the 2nd half by over 200 points. They also beat the two teams that beat Michigan, crushed a great Wisconsin defense, and handed Iowa their worst loss. I think Franklin did an unbelievable job. Nobody but nobody expected that level of achievement except maybe Franklin and his team. I'm glad eastern football finished strong this year. Pitt was only a few points away in a couple of games from getting into a major bowl and had one of the best wins of the season for sure and a super productive offense that was fun to watch. West Virginia finished well. This was a fun year for eastern football. Give credit where it is due. Franklin is a great coach and his players love him. I for one hope the PSU Pitt series continues.

"One of?"

Try again. We beat the #2 team in the nation AT THEIR HOUSE. Not "one of."

He's a classy guy. He's also pretty smart. He knows he would look like an idiot if he started whining and crying. Because regardless of whether his team is in the playoffs or Rose Bowl, they are probably looking at an ass beating either way.

I don't know what he prefers, but they have a real simmering problem with their over price gouged season ticket holders that has been festering for the last decade.
The fact is, in their over emphasized sense of importance they are bored with most of the b10 teams outside of OSU and Michigan, and hate having to pony up for the price of season tickets and associated fees, and the cost of traveling in for one of the big two, 3 boring, middling b10 teams, temple and Rhode Island.

Not so sure, McSorley is playing like the Wizard they called him, he is so adaptable to Moorhead's System he may be hard to stop by USC Defense. Yet, I saw what USC can do to with to QBs with their size and speed, they have it all.

USC has over 60 Four & Five Star Players compared to Penn State 27, and only 1 RS-SR's Players so young as PSU too.

This is a Perfect Test for Pitt and all Big Ten Teams to see how USC will do against Penn State to prepare for next year. If USC can't stop them in the Second Half it will be harder for many next year.

What few are missing is the Penn State Defense also gets better in the Second Half, they feed off of McSorley Attitude and they stopped Minnesota, OSU, Indiana, Wisky, Rutgers and MSU in 2016. They did not stop Michigan or Pitt! Yet, that was early in the year.

Can't wait for the Bowl Game Match Ups to portend some predictions for next year. Pitt's Narduzzi is facing these Coaches & QBs in 2017 Order of Importance & Challenge: Starters Losses depend on Junior & RS-Seniors May go to into NFL Draft?

Narduzzi was 2-2 in 2016 Signature Wins & Losses & none pending, Wins #2Clemson, #3Penn State, Losses #12OKSU, #22VT!

-Which is smart. Play the Washington and Baylor way, feast on cupcakes. Teams like Baylor have been doing it for years. They didn't make the playoffs, but they were consistently ranked top 10 and got a ton of pub for winning 10 games every year. I've been saying this on this board for a while. Pitt wants to play murders row in the non conference schedule. And because we did it again this year, we have 4 losses and many people think we are average with 2 Top 5 wins nationally. Take out the OK state game and put a laugher team in there, we are ranked top 15 or 10 right now. Miami got put into the top 10 this year early in the season by running the score up on high school teams. The way we schedule is stupid. Put Rutgers and Maryland on the schedule yearly. Those are 2 auto wins vs big ten garbage. Not only do we blow them out and get p5 wins, we steal their recruits in their home state. Playing Oklahoma state and Iowa did absolutely nothing for us except cost us a better ranking.

Agree with most of your views but Franklin has most of his own Players Back, and won't being playing Cupcakes as much as 2014 & 2015, do not agree that #3Ohio State, #6Michigan, #8Wisky, #22Pitt, & #9USC are Cupcakes in 2016!

Franklin is 2-2 & 1 Pending, Wins #3OSU, #8WISKY & Losses #6 MICHIGAN, #22PITT & #9 USC Pending, could end up 3-2 or 2-3?

If PSU had beaten Pitt, it would've been the reason they were awarded a playoff spot in place of either Washington or Ohio State. Sparty showed this last season. No doubt tOSU was better than Sparty last season. BUT, by virtue of only having a single loss rather than two, the committee didn't have much choice but to take Sparty instead of tOSU.

That should be the Pitt model as well.

agreed, there is nothing to gain by playing Ok State the same year as PSU. The B1G has built in advantages by having many bottom feeders that the ACC doesn't have (4 teams with 3 wins or less this year....think about that). Plus highly beatable middle of the road teams in Maryland, Northwestern, Minnesota and Indiana.

Beating UT last season is why OU got it in. Beating Oregon last season is Sparty got in over tOSU. And, had they beat Pitt this season, it would be the reason PSU got in over Washington.

especially since Washington's schedule was weak, their P5 game was Rutgers, although Pac does play 9 league games

Wisconsin has a great defense? Sure as hell could have fooled me.
I have to agree. Their pass defense looked no better than Pitt's, and their offense doesn't belong on the same field as Pitt's. Maybe the absence of Hornibrook was the deciding factor?

He's a classy guy. He's also pretty smart. He knows he would look like an idiot if he started whining and crying. Because regardless of whether his team is in the playoffs or Rose Bowl, they are probably looking at an ass beating either way.
