GAME THREAD - Pitt vs Notre Dame .......

Interesting stats, both teams hit 17 FGs and 7 threes, Pitt shot 59% from the field, ND 57%. Pitt outrebounds ND by 10.

Let's be honest here too..pitt didn't play awful defense...Jackson was hitting really tough threes.

Notre Dame shot 56.7% from the floor, 53.8% from three. We have not forced even one turnover yet. The notion that what we just saw from Pitt was anything other than awful defense is laughable.

Should be ahead by more than 6. As well as Young played hè began to force things. Dumb foul to get number 3 . Looking at a dogfight here for sure the way we play defense.

And by the way, if we exclude Jackson Notre Dame shot 57.1% from the field and 50% from three. And still didn't commit even one turnover.

It's not all just Jackson, not by a long shot.

A good percentage of that 53.8% were from 5 feet beyond the arc or with a hand in their face. Can't do anything about that.

Oh stop it. You're being ridiculous.

The calls on young, at least two of them were awful. Robinson got tackled when he drove the lane the one time and no call. The ref in the backcourt called a foul on ANO under the hoop when the ref right by the play didn't.

They were horrific.

Everyone in the Universe knows ND lives and dies by the 3----but we still can't defend them

Officiating was fine... and not even close to being an issue in the first half.

ND is very tough to beat at home. I am happy we are up 6.
Agreed.

JRob and Artis have to carry the team for a little while since we'll probably start the half with Young on the bench.

Yeah, one of them was from well beyond the arc. And of course there wasn't a hand anywhere near Jackson's face on that one.

I don't think we played good defense. The scouting report has to say that Jackson and Beachum are three point threats, You can't lag off of them. Make them work to score.

Personally I think that is the most annoying thing on Earth to see. Guys chucking up shots they should be getting benched for taking, and making those shots. Don't care how you look at it, that is not good basketball.

Jackson was hitting step back 35 footers and threes with hands in his face . Nothing you can do . We hit a bunch of shots two , but they were all quality shots.

Hahaha. Fine? Don't want to make this a personal issue with you, I enjoy your posts. But before the Maia reach in, Notre Dame's defender on the other end completely wrapped his arms around J-Rob. Not a single person on Earth can seriously say that was not a foul. It was as obvious as a foul will ever be.

While the way it happened was kind of weird, about the score I'd expect with two teams that don't really play much defense. I thought Pitt got a little to three point happy, I would have liked to have seen the ball thrown inside to Young more.

I guess Jeter will start the second half, which isn't the worst replacement. I usually would criticize Jamie there, but the way Mike was dominating, he's an upperclassmen and you have to trust him there. I also thought Chris Jones had a good half. Of all of the Panthers, Smith was just brutal on defense. I think 4 different guys scored on him driving to the hoop.

Key for Pitt is keeping Artis in rhythm, not giving up second chance points, and not getting overwhelmed when ND makes runs. Its hard to believe, but this is our first road game. I thought we did OK in keeping composure there, in the last minute we actually gained 2 points. Robinson is going to have to hit a couple shots, or at least drive to the hoop.

HAIL TO PITT

Look... .Past Pitt teams would be playing better defense and be down about 32-29 right now.

That's not who we are anymore.

Embrace the up-tempo offensive games. A 6-point lead is a 6-point lead.... whether it is 49-43 or 25-19.

Embrace who we are.

You're nuts. The non-call on Robinson was the bad one. On Young's last foul he reached in and hit the guy on the arm. That's a foul all day, every day. He got called for a foul against Auguste when he was shooting that if it happened on the other end and we didn't get the call we'd be screaming about for the rest of the day. I notice you also didn't mention the shooting foul that we got when Jeter was attempting to tip in a rebound. That gets called a shooting foul pretty much never, and yet we got two foul shots out of it today.

Take off the blue and gold glasses.

Agreed. The only bad call of the first half was the non-foul call on Vasturia against JRob.

Other than that one call, the officiating has been fine.

By the way, has anyone seen James Robinson?
Artis and Young were in fire and shooting a lot. Would you rather James just hoist some threes, just to get some points? What a silly post. We scored 49, how much should we have scored? 60?

Dixon might have cost this team the game by leaving Young out there to get his third foul.

I think Dixon is too conservative in playing guys with 2 fouls. Maybe Young scores 6 points in the last two minutes and we go up by 12. I don't really believe in saving players...I mean, Mike could get his 3rd foul 10 seconds into the second half.

I think you have to trust Mike there to play 2 minutes without fouling, and Mike just had a brain fart and fouled over the back on an offensive rebound.

He did have 3 assists, so I'm not sure what the problem is really. Artis and Young were scorching hot, and Robinson isn't selfish enough to shoot just so he can get some points.

That certainly was a shooting foul on Jeterr. he was trying to dunk.

J-Rob non call was flat out insane. Couple other really bad calls too. But I will agree at least 2 of the Mike Young fouls were the correct calls. Not saying we haven't done our fair share of fouling, but the bad calls today were so bad it was laughable.

But I will agree at least 2 of the Mike Young fouls were the correct calls.

And the third one was the offensive foul when they were using the goofy corner end zone camera angle and there is no way you can say if Young hooked the guy or not based on what we actually saw.

He was trying to tip in a rebound. That almost never gets called a shooting foul, it almost always gets called a foul on the rebound.
You are correct. But when Jeter went to tip it in, he was clearly slapped on the wrist. In that situation you have to call that.

Yeah. Didn't like that one, but couldn't really tell for sure.

There was 1:07 to play in the 1st half when Young got his 2nd foul and there was a stoppage in play ..... he should have been taken out ..... mistake by Jamie.

I agree. I generally don't think it's necessary to take a guy with two fouls out (depending on the player), but once you get to the last minute or so of the half get those guys out. No sense taking a chance.

Jeter is almost interchangeable with Young when he is playing like this.

We have a deep, deep team.... and our first 3 guys off the bench would be starters on half the teams in the country.

I was surprised that Young was still there. He got his second foul with 1:07 left. It would've been alright to have him sit the final 1:07.

The good news is that Jeter is one helluva replacement and played good down the stretch.

Jeter seems to agree.

I really like what Maia gives this team. An inside presence we sorely missed last season. He gets all the dirty rebounds, and he is the one guy who can defend the post effectively on this team.

JRob is having an awful shooting game, but he still is a calming influence that Damon Wilson isn't ready to be just yet.

Even when JRob scores 0.... he has to stay on the floor.
